1955 Jaguar D-Type; driven by Ron Flockhart and Ninian Sanderson this car won LeMans in 1956. Sold off a couple of years later when Jaguar pulled out of racing, the car was completely restored by its first owner, retaining as much of the original car as possible. It went through two other private owners over the years, carefully maintained such that it is still considered 90% original.
Offered to the public for the first time in 2016, this car auctioned for the highest price ever paid for any Jaguar ....this is a $21,780,000 car.

Lotus Elise GT1
Truly obscure, an Industrial Design Research FireAero; about thirty were built in the late eighties in Laguna Beach CA. Powered by a Honda 750cc motorcycle, not just the engine, the forks were removed and the rest of the motorcycle welded to the car frame, the rear tire replaced by an auto style tire.
Designed by David Stollery, a child actor (I Love Lucy, Dragnet, The Adventures of Spin & Marty) who became an industrial designer (he designed the '78 Toyota Celica); he was hired by a wealthy patron to design a front wheel drive tricycle car. The benefactor passed away before the project was completed, but work continued sporadically over the years til it evolved into the FireAero. Probably intended as a kit car (to use whatever motorcycle the customer wanted for propulsion), other work took precedence and the company quietly disappeared.

1955 Nardi Bisiluro, designed by an aeronautical engineer, powered by a 740cc engine, it competed at LeMans in '55, where it ended up in a muddy ditch after the driver was unnerved being passed by a much faster car. Years later the designer donated it to a museum in Italy, where it is still on display. (BTW, "bisiluro" means twin torpedo.)

But his most famous work is probably the 333 Riviera luxury amphibian plane, around two dozen made by SAIA in the early sixties, most sold in the US. Several are still flying.

1959 Ascort TSV, the "Australian Porsche". Designed by a Czech engineer who relocated to Australia, inspired by the Porsche 356 and Karmann Ghia; a four seat sport car powered by a 1300cc VW engine "hopped up" to 54hp. Top speed was 95mph, 0-60mph in 12 sec, partially due to a total weight just under 1500lb.
The Ascort was first shown at the 1959 Melbourne Auto Show, where it got about 60 preproduction orders. Only 13 were built, with parts for six more on hand, when the company, Continental Coachwork, shut down and was never heard of again. "A few" of those cars still exist, most in Australia.

1955 Corvette. Bowman-Grey Stadium (Winston-Salem, NC; track still in use), driver listed as PeeWee Jones (one of the first NASCAR drivers, originally sponsored by Bill France; his last race was 1959, he passed away in 2008 at age 80).
Don't know if this was a competition car (minimal windscreen, roll bar, steel wheels), a promotional car ("100 lap race" on rear fender), or a push car (note front "bumper"). And wheels painted half/half different colors.
