1972 Chrysler Valiant Charger R/T E49

300 HP from a straight six in 1972!

The slant-six, 225ci. I had one in a '63 Valiant (modded to about 200hp) and one in a '66 Coronet.

Many "hot rod" parts were available since Plymouth had planned to use that engine in a sport car, which, obviously, never came to fruition. All that remains of the project is the prototype XNR (for Exner, the designer).

Remember the Honest Charlie Speed Shop? Their catalog contained all the performance parts for the 225 - Edelbrock, Weiand, Weber, etc. Intake manifolds were available for 2-2bbl, 3-2bbl, single 4bbl, dual 4bbl, or triple Weber sidedraft. A 6-3-2 exhaust was available, as were larger valves, better rockers and springs, hot cams...

I wanted the Weber setup for my Valiant but cost was an issue for a high school senior, so went with three Carter 2-bbl, slightly hotter cam, larger valves, and the special exhaust. Spent a small fortune having the head work done. Larger radiator, homemade CD ignition, electric fuel and oil pumps, floor shift (can't be cool with a three-on-the-tree) ... and parents scratching their heads, "what's wrong with that boy?"

It was still a nerdy four door Valiant, but oh it ran nice, and sounded better.

1968 Dodge Hurst Hemi Super Stock Dart. As the ad states, only 50 were built. Like its Plymouth Hurst Hemi 'Cuda counterpart (also 50 made), all came from Chrysler/Hurst in gray primer with black gelcoat fiberglass fenders. They obliterated the NHRA SS/A (manual trans) and SS/AA (automatic) until NHRA made their own class for them a few years back.

1 of the 8 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am convertibles as it appeared in the 1970s. The first year Trans Am option was only available in the U.S. national racing colors of white with stripes. A late addition to the Firebird lineup (approx. Jan 1969) and an expensive option around $1,000, meant hardtop production was 650-some cars (memory fails the exact number). The eight convertibles were all equipped with 400 CID Ram Air engine that was standard on the T/A with production split evenly between 4-speed manual and 3-speed automatic transmissions. The ragtops went primarily to Pontiac marketing and top executives. People knew they were rare when new and amazingly all eight Trans Am droptops still survive--4 in the Brothers Collection of rare musclecars.

Sorry--the image did not upload initially!

Mosler MT900 XX, twin turbo Corvette LS7 427 engine, nominal 700hp, can be tuned to near 1000hp on high octane, dyno tested to 1800hp on racing fuel. A couple were raced successfully but scored no points due to homologation rules

He led every lap and won at Daytona Beach in 1941 ...even though he rolled the car twice.

Shortly afterwards he was shot and killed by his cousin in a dispute over moonshine. He was 21 years old.

Bill France said Seay was the best driver he ever knew.
