They have the possibility to let us play beta or last version with the preorder. It could be good for us, and for them. And when released, the game could be more optimized thanks to this choice.
I don't think they will do that. Yet many other games do it.
But from the beginning I am afraid by the lack of full-scale test in multiplayer for example.
Finally, it is their choice if they want to take that risk.
The tech demo would have allowed them to test for the baulk of compatibility issues and weird graphical issues so for the most part they have already done that aspect of public testing.
Having people play a beta build can be a huge resource drain and it depends on development decisions early on as well as company culture , sometimes it can work out having a largely public game other times its better to launch with a bang by having a more private development. ( so long as that bang is not a car accident
)
Given the nature of sim racing and the size of kunos I think it makes sense for them to launch with a bang with a cohesive product that they kept mostly under wraps rather than drip feed patches to an open beta.
I think there is a specific appeal to having a reasonably polished full game that can give kunos an edge or players a motivation to pick up AC as well as or over Pcars RF2 and R3E.
Both methods of development can work well though and it depends on many factors as to what works best for which studio.
I agree maybe a larger multi-player test could have been a good idea but who knows maybe they have tested that extensively internally , or maybe it will be a mess at launch and need patching soon after.
If they released it as a beta and it was a mess then patched it within a month , people would still react the same way as if it was a non beta and had same issues that were patched in a month , as a consumer I think its just a case of getting value for money or an expected product and support for the money spent. It doesn't matter if a developer calls it alpha beta or potato.
We Just have to just wait and see how things pan out , I think allot of the delays of AC are likely from Kunos wanting to make sure the game has good solid foundational content so that they can then leverage steam and wrap up allot of customers that are looking for a nice solid driving game with some nice IP such as the wider market that bought into Race 07 and GTRE.
I don't know about other people but personally I'm looking forwards to a nice solid driving game with a good bit of content to play around with , compared to dribs and drabs of half broken or hit and miss content often found in other simulators.
I really enjoyed GTRE not because it was the most realistic of sims but simply because it was a nice package , and I think the general consumer appreciates that as well and I think AC might fill that demand.
Maybe you are right though and they will do a beta though with pre-order who knows !
