How Long Have You Been Sim Racing?

I've been asking myself this question. There are so many sim racers here on RaceDepartment. So many different levels of experience are present. So tell us a bit about yourself and your history! How long have you been sim racing?

And to break the ice: let me start with my relatively recent story.

It all started in a dreaded year. We now look back at it in disdain as one of the worst years in recent history:

Welcome back to 2020.

The start of the pandemic forced many people to stay inside their homes. And therefore, all outgoing people suddenly had to find something to do at home. I was not one of those, rather, I had been a gamer for years. Add to that my previous interest in racing, and you have the great combination of some games lying dormant in my Steam library.

One of those games was Project CARS 2, which I had bought at some point or another in the past, but hadn't enjoyed with my trusty gamepad. I thought of booting it up again, but then read that playing it with a wheel and pedals would be the wisest decision.

I immediately knew what to do because in the past I had read of Logitech wheels being sold 2nd hand on a local platform. However, for the first time looking at such a product, I had money to spare. So I thought to myself: "Screw it, I'm going all in and buying a new Logitech G920!"

My First Wheel Led to Massive Enjoyment

And boy, did I have an amazing time! I ground the leaderboard of Brno with my trusty Honda NSX GT3.

Why Brno? I had been going there live for over 10 years to watch MotoGP.
Why the NSX? I just happen to like how it looks, to be honest.

This was such an exciting time for me. At some point I gathered all of my courage and started racing online. Now that was ... more of a 50/50 chance of having a good time. But the one memory that still sticks with me is my first-ever online victory!

It was Suzuka, or Sakkito as Project CARS 2 called it, GT3s and variable weather. With my trusty NSX, I qualified not too well, but after some happenings in the first lap, I was in the top 5. After some great battles, it suddenly started raining. And this is where the magic came in. I happened to choose my pit stop so wisely and perfectly that I immediately made up 2 positions. The top 2 at that time tried running their previous tyres to the end, leading to me catching up lap by lap, corner by corner. Half a lap before the end I finally managed to claw in P1 for my first ever online victory.

But then I Graduated ... To League Racing and ACC

Fuelled by hype from this success and other good races, I started looking for beginner leagues. I found a promising one on Reddit, with which I spent quite some time before once again switching sims to RaceRoom and founding my own racing community based on that. At some point here, I had also switched to an entry-level DD wheel which I race to this day.

This community has, in the meanwhile, switched to ACC (based on community wishes), and continues to run strongly.

Think of that what you want, to this day, I mainly race on ACC and RaceRoom. And think of THIS what you want, but my favourite category to race is GT3s, no matter the sim.

So, soon I will have raced for only 3 years. Still, these 3 years have been filled with so much excitement, so many buddies I have met online, and so many good memories. I grew to love sim racing and probably won't ever look back.

Now It's Time for You to Tell Your Story!

Sometimes it's really nice to reminisce and think about what made you the person you are now. I wholeheartedly invite you also to share your story with sim racing. How you started, how you evolved and where you are now.

Feel free to share your story as in-depth or as vague as you want. I can't wait to hear your guys' stories.

So, how long have you been sim racing? Please, let us know in the comments down below!

Ps.: Thank you very much to @AlbertGeorge for allowing me to use their magnificent screenshot for this article.

My first exposure to "sim racing" was Digital Derby in late 1970s.

Graduated to the Atari 2600 with Night Driver, Indy 500 and Pole Position in the early 1980s.

Moved to PC in 1992 for Microprose's Formula One Grand Prix, using a joystick. This remains my all-time favourite sim racing title.

My first steering wheel was the Thrustmaster T2 in the mid-1990s, clamped to a coffee table and using a bean bag as the chair.

Graduated to a Logitech G25 and a Wheel Stand Pro in 2007 as my first dedicated "sim rig", with a few sim rigs upgrades since then.

I had a ZX81, but my first racing game was on the Spectrum 48k in 1983 - early 1984 and moved to PC in 1985... I released my first mods in 2007

I'm just a relative new comer to Sim Racing and being into Graphics I liked the look of 'Need for Speed Shift' in 2009 for the PS4 for my first Racing Game, and the great thing with this copy of NFSS is, it came with a very basic Wheel / Pedal set which introduced me to really driving instead of the hand controller:thumbsup:

From then on I was hooked, getting other Games like 'Midnight Club Los Angeles' and 'GT' then upgraded the Wheel to the Logitech Driving Force and further down the track getting a G27, what a revelation that wheel was.

In 2010 I decided to go for it, and got a set of 'ECCI Trackstar 6000 Pedals':inlove: which I still have to this very day and connected to my now Thrustmaster TS XW wheel Base and also upgraded to the PC as rFactor with all the mods was the king for me personally:)way back then at that time.

Now, 14 years later with most Sims on my Hard Drive...Life is Sim-Tastic:cool:

1992
I had an Atari ST to program music, and I knew a guy in Antwerp that would sell copied games (usually 1 floppy each). I used to play compleet half race length championships during the night in those days.. totally addicted.

The only game I played more in those days was 'Dungeon Master'...

Later on I bought a PC and raced Nascar Racing 3, Indycar 2 and Grand Prix 2.

1998
When Grand Prix Legends was anounced, I bough a new PC with 3D card and a Thrustmaster T2 wheel to be ready.. only to find out GPL did not support true 3D acceleration...

In 2005 my interest in Racing simulation was revived by GTR2.
That's when I started modding.

This was my first "sim" :D

Wow I had absolutely forgotten about this one!!! Thanls for the reminder!!!

My first pure racing sim was about about a porsche running the 1990 24th hours of le mans with the complete field, 120 FPS, day and night cycle, dynamic lights and shadows, with H shifter and triple screen support, loik at that majesty :

Ok maybe I have some optimistic memories, but there is a night and day cycle!

The same year came Stunts which was a true piece of art :
There was some realstic things kn the drving, inside view, nice cars selection and the whole track editor in which I've built insane tracks. It never got a modern equivalent (no, trackmania isn't in the same league).

About real sims, it started with Indycar racing where I met 2 of my fav tracks, lagjna seca (my first time with so impressive elevation changes, excepted Stunts). After it was Nascar Racing and GP2 with a good Thrustmaster T2 wheel, this made a huge difference in those games, it was a whole new world. GP legends was too hard for me, it was a disappointment.

After a few years of lost of interest in games I got back in gaming thanks to gta san andreas, a huge step had been done at that time, it really amazed me (i thought the 2D sprites from the mid 90s looked better than the 3D awful graphics from the late 90s and very early 2000). And in 2003, it was time for... F1 Challenge with a Wingman force GP wheel. After that came GTR1 and then GTR2, which was a huge step in the genre, in terms of graphics and feeling.. I felt much more confident with GT cars (never was good with F1s, I had not understand how to drive them at that time). And then rfactor, GT legends, with a 900° DFP wheel (another game changer). Then came onlinz racing, which I let down a few years ago due to lack of time for sim racing. That's a lot of time, and I aim now to dedicate more time to sim racing again. See U on track!
EDIT : i forgpt the rally sims, which I haven't been a fan until more recently. I think my first one was rally championship 2000, but haven't played a lot. Rallycross championship (not dure of the title!) was my firts enjoyable title I think, before colin mcrae 2 and rallisport challenge (not sims though). RBR was really hard but the physics felt natural.

I forgot to mention LFS, which I regret I haven't bought in its time, because I had doubt paying over the internet on such an indie website (yes these were other times ; I had resisted to steam until the first simbin's race title came out, it had to be activated on steam, and so I got knto the devil's world were you pay but don't own anything!), and because it lacked licensed cars. But the demo was already amazing it was the first sim which felt so natural ; in other titles you had to learn to drove the sim before learning to drive a car. Here it was an inmediate enjoyment, I felt immediatly I was driving the car. I've never got into LFS after, enjoying so many titles. With now mod and VR support, it must be an amazing title but the asked price, although not a big deal, is high compared to more recent titles (like AC to name one). I understand it may maintain toxic users away but it is an old product afterall. It seems this one always had something annoying for me at any pount of its history.

all this reminded me I go back even further. Colecovision and Pitstop(or it may have been Pitstop II) You got to run the little guy around and change all 4 tires on the car. Then back to the track. 1983ish...

Yeah.....Revs. I was into that but my 486 sx33 was the gateway to proper sim racing and wheel use. Previous to that driving game interest was all arcades really.

About 5 years ago I bought the used G27 from my son Enzo who upgraded to better equipment himself. My first sim was F1 2016 (cheap because F1 2017 was already released). As in those years the F1 in the Netherlands got much more attention because of Max Verstappen joining Toro Rosso I got more interested in racing in general.
But F1 2016 is limited in cars and tracks so I bought Assetto Corsa after seeing Enzo driving the Transfagarasan hillclimb which looked great.
I only did offline racing in AC after that until Enzo gave me a RD premium account and wanted me to join a GT3 race on Mosport, organized by Craig Dunkley. That race was very stressfull and scary but because I already knew that Enzo was at least 3 seconds faster, I was very happy to see that I wasn't the only backmarker.
So I kept attending Craig his events not only GT3's but also vintage cars and road tracks.

After Craig had his unfortunate accident and his successors also stopped with organizing AC events, Brian Walsh and I decided to take over and now we're are already doing this for two years now. Mostly because the participants in our events are very nice persons and also clean and respectful drivers, I enjoy organizing these events as much as I like racing with them. AC is great with all those magnificent mods.

Recently we started using Emperor Server Manager for the events which has a lot of nice extra's like Championships, Live Timing and in game penalties.
I'm sure this will help to make the events even more fun and I'm happy to be part of that journey.

I made this video years and years ago using an old phone to record. It is a mod with Murray Walker commentary that I used to use.
Hahaha if you want to check a hilarious video out featuring a fake Murray Walker out on the old Spa then here is a race from probably ancient Greece times :roflmao:

CatsAreTheWorstDogs: Be aware the video goes into color mode after about 2min:roflmao:

Around 20. It started with flight sims for me back in the good ol days. I was drawn to more complex gsmes for some reason. 700 page manual? Great!!! A million buttons to press and see what happens? Oh yes please! My friends thought i was nuts. :D
