After arguably the most controversial race weekend of the season so far, Formula One turns to one of the most iconic locations on the 2024 calendar. São Paulo, Brazil for the final instalment of this triple-header string of race weekends.

Brazil is always a highlight for drivers and fans alike with its incredible history, both classic and modern. Senna's first home Grand Prix victory in 1991, the controversial 2008 finale and Lewis Hamilton's unbelievable last-to-first effort at the 2021 Brazilian Grand Prix. With how 2024 is shaping up, it looks like we could be in for another fantastic race weekend.

Can Lando realistically beat Max Verstappen?

To nobody's surprise, it was Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’s Forza Motorsport open-lobby-style clash in Mexico which has been the talk of the town in Sao Paulo. This follows an incident-packed trip to Austin, Texas the week before.

Whilst the duo might be friends off the track, there is no correlation when they get behind the wheel. How far will Verstappen push his luck and what will become of his title fight if he continues to break the rules? Could Norris turn the season around?

To become champion in 2024, Norris needs to reduce an intimidating 47-point gap to leader Verstappen. However, whilst this is a big ask of the Papaya driver in four events, the Dutchman has not been immune to reliability and consistency problems this year, so Norris is still well and truly in the fight.

Whatsmore, in the final practice session on Friday, Norris lead a British 1-2-3 with Mercedes' Geroge Russell and Kevin Magnussen's replacement this weekend, Oliver Bearman, filling in the final slot. Norris is looking fired up and ready for a fight. There is no doubt Verstappen is faster than the 15th he managed in FP3, he never put the soft on his RB20 so we will have to wait until Sprint Qualifying gets underway to see his true potential.

Kick-Sauber restructure in preparation for Audi takeover in 2026

Ex-Ferrari Head of Race Strategy and Sporting Relations, Inaki Rueda, will join the Kick-Sauber team in 2025 as part of the team’s ongoing restructuring in preparation for the team to morph into Audi’s Formula 1 team when the new rules come into play for the 2026 season.

Rueda has been unemployed in the world of Formula One since leaving Ferrari at the end of last season. Rueda will join the Swiss team as a replacement for current strategist, Beat Zehnder, who will be promoted to the new position of Director of Signature Programs and Operations.

Current Haas driver, Nico Hulkenberg, was officially announced back in April as the first driver to be announced for Sauber and then into Audi's Formula One effort in 2026. The speculation has been rising continuously over who will partner with the German, current drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu are not favourites for the seat. Bottas has admitted he ‘can’t do more’ with his Kick Sauber and therefore cannot show why he deserves a seat in 2025.

Current Formula 2 championship points leader, Gabriel Bortoleto, is making waves in the paddock with this second Audi seat up for grabs. Talking to the media in Brazil, three-time world champion Max Verstappen had this to say about the future driver lineup at Sauber.

“If I was Sauber I would’ve signed him already (Gabriel Bortoleto), especially because young drivers are the future and it will be hard for him to adjust in 2026."

“It’s always good to get used to a team already for a year, make your mistakes here and there, get integrated well, understand the car a bit. You always feel much more prepared and comfortable when you then start in ’26.” - Max Verstappen

Kevin Magnussen to miss Brazilian sprint race.

Danish Haas driver, Kevin Magnussen, is due to miss out on all of Friday's free practice running as well as Saturday's sprint race at the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend. Haas' young reserve driver Oliver Bearman will take the wheel of Magnussen's VF-24 for those two days.

Early on Friday morning, Haas announced Magnussen had become physically unwell and would not be able to compete in the Friday and Saturday sessions. There is hope that the Dane will be able to compete in Sunday's big race, but time will tell.

"Kevin Magnussen will not participate in Friday’s track running at the São Paulo Grand Prix after suffering from sickness. Our official reserve driver Oliver Bearman will take over driving duties. The team wishes Kevin a quick recovery and will provide a further update in due course." - Team Haas

Table.png

Points system:

There will be 10 points awarded for guessing the right position and the correct name and 5 points for guessing the right name, but the wrong position. The table above is purely to illustrate how it works (Mexico has been used as an example) At the end of the season we will award the overall winner one year of Premium membership here on OverTake worth €12.99!

what a race obrigado brazil and funny the Legend Stroll made a crash before ever start and we saw finally black flag in f1 for the first time since montreal 2007 max verstappen is the new shumacher senna master in rain and the alpine from tractors to speedboats wawo obrigado brazil again this is why i love this track so much after montreal (my personnal fav) , Monza , bahrain

Sky, hire James Hinchcliffe, speaks clearly, not unpleasant voice, no flowery bias nonsense, no doing Stewards job for them.

Norris won't get any punishment, which I already thought. And is also not punished after he went off the track and dangerously returned back on the track with his fight with George Russel. That's all fine, I just don't like all those penalties. But the credibility of these fat FIA people and ex drivers is quite shocking with the favoritism of certain people. Sad 😣😕

Well, it appears that it's OK for Mercedes to adjust tyre pressures on the grid in parc ferme conditions and gain an advantage (after all if there was no advantage it wouldn't have been done) and the race director only charged the $billion+ team $4ooo, per car, with no sporting penalty... Hulkenberg breaking the rules by getting a push from the marshals (because his car was in a dangerous place) gets disqualified with a Black Flag.
What will happen to Norris and co... well if things go accordingly they might have to do the washing up as punishment, on the other hand, could it just be explained away and forgotten?

Either way, I can say it now cos DD's probably seen the race...
Well done Max, DoD, and Fan'bloody'tastic drive

Max needs to finish all 3 races no higher then 6th.
Wouldn't need a fastest lap and could sit the last Sprint out.
Oscar can give up all the places up he wants 💋

So you close up all gaps, put cars out there on ice cold worn tires, bunched up for a restart? And what do you do about the damaged cars? Have them out there possibly without wings or dropping debris across the track? What could go wrong?

There are changes that can be made, but forcing cars out on the track without any changes isn’t a good move.
they stay in the pits and get repairs. If they were that damaged before the red flag, they shouldn't be out there. Giving free pitstops to the Alpines & Max nullifies everyone else's race. If they need new tires...then either stay and change them once the race goes green or cycle one lap back to the pits. Race Stopped is not a Freebie for anyone...leaders or straglers.

RB stayed out longer. But I think Max would have caught Russel and Norris anyway. He was so much faster every lap in the rain.

Speaking of which...
Seems like Albon has had a raft of crashes and failures since Mick Schumacher was run out of town. How many crashes did Schu Jr have vs how many Albon has had since?

Oh boy, F1 threads are now my favourite.

OK as most everybody is calling for penalties for Norris, Hamilton and Russell, lets have a look.

1. Aborted start fiasco.
Ok, a bit of a dumb and dumber moment by Norris, and a mistake for sure, but no advantage was gained, and nobody's safety was put at risk. Also there is significant precedence of two or more formation laps in wet weather conditions. In essence a bit of balls up but ultimately no harm done.

Also to penalise Norris would mean to penalise the half of the grid which followed him therefore leading the race director to make the pragmatic decison for an additional formation lap, hence the minimal fine.

Doument 84 - Infringement - Car 4 - Aborted start incident

2. Unsafe rejoin by Norris
Somebody mentioned this, and I thought I'd take a look at the replays. Both times Norris rejoined at racing speed onto the track off the racing line and without impeding any other car. Nor was there any investigation or call for investigation on this. This is BS, there is nothing to see here, no wrongdoing at all.

3. Mercedes pressure changes under red flag conditions.
It is true that under an aborted start Parc Fermé conditions apply. However there are some exceptions and one of these is changing climatic conditions, which definitely applies here. This does however require permission from the race director.

The FIA have essentially admitted that due to limited time, difficult logistics, etc, after the aborted start that it would have been practically impossible for teams to have followed correct procedure, hence a minimal fine again.

I'm in two minds about this one, It may have been necessary due to the conditions and it could have been that permission would have been given should time have allowed. Honestly it didn't affect the outcome of the race anyway and it would appear that the race stewards took a decision to issue a fine in order to prevent this becoming a precedent.

Document 81 - Infringement - Car 44 - Tyre Pressure Checks - This is Hamiltions infringement. Russell's says the same thing.

So all in all on the face of it there's nothing really onerous at all about the above. Certainly nothing that would have altered the race outcome or presented any safety risks.

Yet it's the same people here calling for massive penalties this time who were the people who were vehemently against the penalties given out in the last race for what was attrocious and incredibly unsafe driving standards.

Sometimes I do wonder if you lot ever have enough neurons firing in unison at any given time to be able to just about scrape through a Turing test.

I think it's more that people, including me, are cynical with how the 'authorities' dish out penalties or 'review' the offence, depending on who committed the offence. I honestly believe Red Bull adjusting tyre pressures on the grid as Mercedes did would have had a different punishment. Max winning the race in the way he did (and only he could) and increasing his Championship lead to a now comfortable buffer has enabled him and Red Bull protection from any cynical attempts to make the show 'go down to the wire' . Having said that, it would do Max well to refrain from any over aggressive driving, or losing his cool on track or interviews. He must not give anyone (looking at you mr herbert) any opportunity to dish out penalties.
No British press at the post race conference was very telling.

I agree, and while @Slapped is waving away judgement concerns under the 'no harm done' banner, there's been plenty of 'no harm done' occurences for Red Bull drivers that have been whacked with time on the naughty step.
I see it as unbalanced and biased towards teams other than Red Bull for the sake of excitement, as for Crofty the Clown and co, they're an embarrassment to the UK, many of us are 'Motor racing' supporters and not led by the nose into patriotism.

I used to really like Johnny Herbert. The man used to be a great talent and had a terrible accident at Brands Hatch. Why does he need this? If not this year? There will automatically be another British driver who will become a world champion.
