Formula 1 enters the season finale of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with the driver’s championship leaders tied on points.

After a roller coaster ride of a season in F1, the final event of 2021 will be held in Abu Dhabi and will decide the championship battle between Max Verstappen or Lewis Hamilton. The two drivers are even on points entering the race.

Verstappen has won more races this year than Hamilton, so if the two end up finishing even after this race due to neither scoring points, the championship would go to Verstappen. Momentum seems to be with Hamilton after back-to-back-to-back race wins in Brazil, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, though points momentum has never lasted long this season.

The Yas Marina circuit is a location where both drivers have won in the past, with Hamilton having won numerous times at the track, and Verstappen being the most recent winner. The layout has been altered for 2021 to encourage more overtaking.

Looking away from the feature act of this race weekend, the constructor’s battle between Mercedes and Red Bull seems to be all but decided, with Mercedes holding a 28-point advantage. With Hamilton and Verstappen cancelling each other out on points, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas have been involved in a lower profile battle than their teammates, but one full of surprises just the same.

This will also be the last time we see certain drivers in F1, or the last time we see them with their current teams. Perhaps the biggest departure is Kimi Räikkönen, who will retire from driving after Abu Dhabi. Kimi’s teammate, Antonio Giovinazzi, will also vacate his F1 seat after this season and will race in Formula E next year instead. One of the Alfa Romeo team seats will be filled by Bottas, who will finish this year third in the driver’s standings. His current seat at Mercedes will be filled by George Russell.

This looks to be an exciting finish to a season filled with drama and shocking moments. Let’s hope that we see the best from each of the championship contenders this weekend.

Are you joking, or simply not thinking? What part of "Masi simply overrode all regulations / used dictatorial power to eliminate just the 5 cars that were in between Lewis and Max AND retired the safety car 1 lap early knowing Max just got fresh softs, and Lewis was on worn hards" do you not register?

We've seen it throughout the last few races, the cars are on the same step performance wise. How exactly do you expect a fair one lap shootout between 2 otherwise equal cars, one with worn hards, one with brand new softs?

Do you actually watch single seater racing, or was this the first race?
Again, I don’t think you understand precisely what’s going on.
This whole lap/unlap debacle started on lap 56. Anything decision that comes before that, is immaterial to the decision of when/how to bring in the safety car. Lewis had his opportunity to put on Lap 54, and he didn’t.

The next time Lewis can pit would have been at the start of Lap 57, and that would have left him in 6th place (I’ve heard 8th, but I think it’s 6th.
Are you saying that if, for example, Race Control announces at that same point of Lap 56 “Lapped Cars may now overtake”, which would mean racing still begins on Lap 58 as it did, that Lewis/Merc would then have pitted for new tyres?

Hamilton and Wolff won't go to the FIA gala party.
==
And for us who also will not attend you can watch via Youtube (if you don;t have Facebook):

Enjoy!

I don't think so, they could have risked and pit as soon as they saw Latifi in the wall. But, they pretty much failed every time when they had to risk in 50-50 plays, so they stayed consistent and failed again. :roflmao:

You seem to respond just for the sake of responding, which is a very widespread thing these days. It might hide some cognitive impairment.

I don't care who won, it's besides the discussion here. No one here was arguing what should or could have happened, just the facts. The gist of the matter is that Masi knew all too well when he gave the green light, overriding all other rules in the book, that Max was on fresh softs, and Lewis on worn hards, basically leaving Lewis a sitting duck for the sake of "sport" or "entertainment". The fact that Masi removed only the 5 cars in between Lewis and Max and let the "race" resume one lap early is just the cherry on top. The discussion here is about fairness and not swaying a race/championship one way or the other through dictatorial power, even if that suits one of the 2 camps.

If you fail to understand this simple idea (which your response will surely clarify), either imagine Max was ahead and Lewis behind, or get a checkup from the top down. Arrivederci!

It's weird but true: the sporting regulations for F1 require the top three drivers to attend the end-of-season gala. I'd hate to be a Mercedes team member who, after working to win eight straight constructor's championships, had to see my team principal refuse to acknowledge the team's accomplishments in a public forum.

Snubbing the awards ceremony... it's the kind of behavior you wouldn't let your kid get away with over a Little League (kids' baseball for you non-Americans) banquet.

Totally unrelated to the discussion but does somebody know why FOM always blocks the embedding of videos on websites and we are forced to watch them on Youtube?

Initially, Masi announced that all lapped cars were to hold station on track between Hamilton and Verstappen.

Then Horner got on the phone to him and complained. That's when he re-announced that only a few cars would be allowed by; otherwise they would have run out of time to allow Verstappen to get past.

Fancy only winning your WDC by virtue of Masi's bumbling incompetancy / corruptability... As I said, hollow.
This is a selective interpretation of what happened.
Masi's tone indicated that he already decided to move the lapped cars when Horner called him. His priority was to clear the track.
If the track couldn't be cleared before the last lap, the race would've ended on an SC.
He told the lapped cars to hold position because it wasn't safe for them to pass, NOT because he was deciding for them not to pass.

So basically he is not legitimate champion because he failed to finish 1st or 2nd in 3 races where he was DNFed and 1 race where his car was "in pieces"? Sounds about right. Championship is not 1 race, put bias aside and look again through all races this season. If in the end you still consider Max as not having legitimate claim on title this year, better get back to football.

As for reputation of the "sport", did you ask the same when leaving/cutting the track and closing the space to the wall was done 2 times? First time nothing was done, second time penalty was given (if you follow f1 you know both instances by heart hopefully). Or when obvious penalty was put on hold, until other competitor also developed pitstop requiring issue. I'm guessing "sport's reputation" then was fine???

P.S. I've put the last one in, just so you can't call me on bias for reds. ;)
There are a lot of people who want to look at anything and everything apart from the actual decision that has caused the controversy and decided the championship. I'm pleased you are happy, enjoy :).
I don't think anyone including Max will lose any sleep over those of us who remain troubled by what happened.

It’s a shame Lewis will not showing his new suit at the end of season gala.

So you are happy for a team to leave F1 and take the grid down to 18? Its already 4 cars less than 2010. I can see the grid getting smaller if this Covid crap continues.

don't act dramatic it will resolve itself, this man is not an example to anyone. but we already saw that on television.
think you better worry how long F1 is allowed with all the CO2 and who still wants to invest in energy that is on the way back

Toto embarassing himself even further...

He didn't seem that sad when he was crowd surfing sunday night.

As for the future of F1 fear not. The battery cars are the ones that are not long for this world at this rate. More and more there is talk about hydrogen or synthetic carbon neutral fuels. F1 is just following the WEC now.

Because the decision isn't as controversial as you think.

1) ALL the teams agreed to try and end races under green flag conditions.
2) No-one could possibly know when the crash site was going to be cleared, Merc gambled on it not being cleared and the race ending under SC something they KNEW was to be avoided if possible.
3) The only issue is that Masi only had time to release those 5 cars before he invoked the rule that allowed him to bring in the SC.

Masi decided to let the race continue, his only other choice was to let it end behind the SC effectively denying Max ANY CHANCE whatsoever, Tell me how that would be fair? At least Lewis had a chance to defend, Max would have had ZERO chance if it ended under SC.

Now I realise UP to the latifi crash Max had less chance than a snowball in hell. But after the crash HE HAD A STRONG CHANCE. Masi let them fight it out rather than hand it on platter to Lewis.

Masi didn't cause the Latifi crash neither did he stop Merc/Lewis from pitting.

We had a lot of talented drivers as Hamiton or even much more than him, I do not care about Englad titles and so should the rest of the world.
And if Hamilton brings politics to the table, I can bring religion, and speak my mind. If he is Catholic and as he said a few races ago, he is, then he should decline the entitlement. If not, he is not Catholic he is just what he decided to be, a political

With all due respect, if you want to discuss politics & religion, I would suggest that you use another social media platform or forum - as this one is about racing - real & sim.

Someone else would buy that team, it's only "mercedes" by name and engine (other engine suppliers out there). I'd LOVE to see the back of Mercedes. Don't they have a history of destroying championships with their overspending? DTM/GT1?
