rF2 Touring Car Revival @ Lakeside - Thu 06 Aug 2020

rFactor 2 Racing Club event
Last one from me (unless I get very bored tomorrow or something...). A little backstory.
Tom Walkinshaw was the guy running the Volvo BTCC effort in the mid 90's, his TWR Group even having a company together with Volvo known as Auto Nova AB. And there was talks in 1996 that Walkinshaw had convinced Volvo to pay enough the re-badge the Hart engines to Volvo, and thus we would've had Arrows-Volvo in F1. This was said to be for the 1997 season in F1. Now, the 1997 Arrows was white, blue (and bits of red) with Parmalat sponsorship. Seeing how I had just done the BMW 6-series, that wasn't too interesting.
However, I found a loophole. In 1997 Arrows used Yamaha engines. They didn't use the re-badged Hart-engines until 1998. Which meant that in this fantasy-scenario, the Arrows-Volvo wouldn't appear until 1998. So, there it was then. The loophole to make a livery based on a fantasy, based on negotiations that never worked.

nice skin, and very sneaky bit of reasoning.

Hi Phil.
Are these cars available on RD Downloads? If not, would it be OK to post them there? Then maybe we could post the templates too?
If that's not something that would be appropriate, then of course we'd respect that.
Denis,
all these cars are still in Devmode at the moment. I have worked for a long time to get them up to RF2 latest standards, both physics and skins. i have also added a few new cars that were not in my 0.42 version. I see no reason why i cannot post them at RD when i finish the latest update.

I know three Norwegian guys who might be interested to do some testing with the added cars :)

What was ODS?

Old Drivers Spirit, a french gang that hosts "24hrs" Le Mans Classic. I've only done it this year, so it might be some rF2 changes there. But this year it was 6 different classes, two based on Le Mans 1954, two on 67, one mid 80's and one Group C. Each class is raced 3 times in a 45 min race, so in total 18 races, with breaks in between for swapping server settings, time of day and so on. (Additional break after race 6 (dinner) and 12 (breakfast)). It's all done within 24 hours IRL. (qualifying split over 2 days pre-race as well)
We could be maximum of 3 drivers from a team driving each race, and not allowed to drive the same car.

It really felt like I were a part of an actual classic Le Mans. The planning in regards to who would drive what cars, who would race what races etc. Was really fun. RD had 2 teams this year, but arguably, seeing how we seemingly got dispensation to have one extra guy in each team, it should be possible to have 3 teams for the next addition.

I know I'm a staff at RD and so on, but... This was really special, and I feel sad that it's a relatively unknown thing. Then again, I don't really get how theres not like 30-40 guys in these races every week either, heh!

At times there was almost 30 sec a lap (slowest cars did take over 5 minutes to drive around Le Mans) between fastest and slowest in the race, but to be honest, it just added to the realistic feel of driving cars from the 50s, it was huge time differences between guys back then.

Erhm, I should stop rambling.

Oh, we didn't win, there are points scored in each race, after scoring over 1000 points, we lost the win with 5.5 points or something like that. Doesn't matter, had (too much) fun! :)

Can't make it this thrs but I'd all over that White TWR Commodore! The BMW and Arrows Volvo are great too.

nice skin, and very sneaky bit of reasoning.

I had to come up with something when I didn't want to make a car based on any actual Volvo touring car over the years.

Also, nice to see that you are still doing some work on the mod :) Any plans of converting the FWD Ford Escort? I know that car is way to slow to compete with the already converted ones, but I feel there is a lack of slightly older FWD cars for rF2 :)

i also like the Escorts ( owned 2 ) i have not converted them. The new cars i added/updated are Mustang, Alfa75, Alfa GTV, XR4i
Its a long slog updating the physics and skins, but i will get to adding others.

Ah, I remember, Denis told me, sounds great...

Oh, so you are bringing along some add-on cars that wasn't part of the initial TCL release as well? Now that is awesome! :)

Ye, I've been asked some years before as well, but never cared. Didn't think it would be any special. Oh man was I wrong.

I have made a Volvo for someone who want a more relaxed, leisurely experience without any pressure :)

While I, just couldn't stay away... When I first did the " Arrows-Volvo F1 98 240 Turbo! ", there was still one more year remaining in which Walkinshaw used the re-badged engines, so following the same loophole, it would've been Arrows-Volvo in 1999 as well.

However, this should be the last idea I have for this week...

Aaaand I have been following the path of inspiration myself, recreating an iconic livery for the BMW M3 EVO.

Me me me, that's made my mind up - M3 for me. :inlove:

That Volvo is being shown some real love

As Norwegians I guess we are a bit biased. After all, Norway did offer Sweden some huge oil concessions (that would've given around 85 billion USD worth of oil) in exchange for 40% of Volvo in the 70's. But Volvo and the Swedes ended up saying no!

I bet if you "leak" some of the new cars you would get some amazing liveries to put in the mod ;)

Would he? To be perfectly honest, I have zero idea in regards to actual real life liveries from that time, that isn't famous enough to already be included!

Sorry @Kresh... the pass was actually illegal :(
In the heat of the moment i was 100% sure i was within the track but i was too busy watching you so i would give you just enough room..
But it was amazing tho :p

Haaa no worries mate its all part of the fun I really enjoyed the battles until they lasted. I am surprised the car actually managed to stop before collecting you at the top :D. I didn't have time to try any of the cars this event, so I just went with 635 and I was all over the place most of the time.:p
