The "What Are You Working On?" Thread

All I see are fantastic projects!! :confused: :D Beautiful work, everyone.

I have a question. I forget how I ended up reading about this software - I had never heard of it before. If money were no object, do you think Autodesk's Alias AutoStudio would be a helpful tool in the creation of 3D vehicles for Assetto Corsa? Being an Autodesk product, I'm sure the integration with 3ds Max would be fantastic. 3ds max is the only tool I'm even slightly proficient in. I stumbled across this Alias AutoStudio while looking up something else on 3ds max and I thought it looked amazing.

Check out a couple of those videos - they're only about 2m long - Then let me know what you think, please. Again - please don't consider price in this scenario. I'm just curious about its usefulness.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention, there is a 30 day free trial which is why I'm very curious to hear the opinions of the awesome modellers in this thread.

I'd say its probably not at all useful for making models for game use, I mean you probably can transfer models over to 3ds, but the mesh will be really dense and unoptimised, you'd just end up making it again in 3ds.

Its more useful for creating first class surfaces for manufacturing - plus its (in my opinion) really difficult to work with! I used it at uni, but really I could never 'gel' with it, I have had way more success with 3ds.

edit*

Tried to find a pic of something I did in Alias, as you can see, I never really did get a hang of it! :roflmao:

Had problems with that method too but years ago using Rhino and nurbs, it's nothing new, and it's the similar method I create cars in 3dsmax. I always start with the basic surfaces and sharp edges, then work with cameras to match the shape and right proportions. Once it's all set I start the detailing process and texturing.

voila the LM @AccAkut
which is not officially the LM since it's 10 spoke on the website, and this one is 12
this one i can't find the proper name, so couldn't find better quality picture than the ones you provided, i hope i got the shapes right
at the moment i still have all spoke in instance, so i can quickly edit thickness etc. if needed

any comments welcome
oh and renders with VRay for beauty purposes (don't mind the tyres ^^)

and mesh preview
about 12.000 vertices per rim at the moment, could be improved easily

Wow. Thanks for the quick replies fellas. :thumbsup: I figured I would ask because of the name AutoStudio. I'm familiar with 3ds max, so I thought it might be a fantastic piece of software if it was like a 3ds max geared specifically toward automotive design. I remember Rhino. I tried it too, but NURBS just gave me a migraine. :laugh:...Patch Modelling does too. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.:cool:

@Ben O'Bro, hot damn! That's an awesome wheel & tire. :)

The whole car has somewhere around 30.000 tris only for now :D Looks absolutely stunning. Guess these rims will be easy to adapt for the rim blur stuff later on, so could you seperate the outer tub and the inner Y-mesh via Materials?

I work professionally as an Alias modeller in the automotive business, and I think it's too slow a tool for this kind of work. It's totally oriented towards production and manufacturing, and not the other way around like Maya or 3DStudio where you work with visualisation models.
Drawing up the basics for a car would be pretty easy and quick work, but detailing would be very slow.
We use Maya for early concept stuff and Volumes, but roughly 80% or more of the work is done in Alias or ICEM.

Donington Grand Prix 1938 WIP So Far

just thought i would drop this here. its early doors and lots to do and potentially change (lots of placeholders)

No physics mesh yet, but the Maserati is made for this place, maybe a bit fantasy in places, but not much to go on pictures and videos wise (no onboards to be found)

let me know your thoughts
