At long last the radio silence around triple screen improvements has been broken.. RaceRoom Racing Experience is getting multi monitor support next patch!

Having been in development behind the scenes for a little while now, Sector3 Studios have finally confirmed that RaceRoom Racing Experience will be receiving a first pass of triple screen support in the upcoming patch due within the next few weeks. Initially the first release will bring with it plenty of the essential requirements for modern multi monitor support, however further development and improvements such as in game UI FOV adjustment and drivers eye positioning are expected to follow in future builds.

When challenged as to the performance impact of triple screen support, Sector3's own @Georg Ortner explained that performance loss is considered to be in "acceptable range" for the new feature.

"A performance loss is to be expected when rendering 3 different images at the same time, but from what I have seen so far it's within an acceptable range" said Ortner.

You can find out more about the new feature details below:

Multiview
An option that allows for independent rendering of each individual screen, rather than stretching one image across multiple monitors.
This will eliminate any kind of image distortion.

Bezel correction
This will create a seamless transition across all screens by compensating the area hidden by your monitor bezels.

Angle correction
An option that corrects the view depending on the physical angle of your triple screen setup.

The feature is currently being tested and we are planning to release a first iteration of it in the next patch.

You will be able to setup your triple screens by entering the following values as a steam launch argument:

[middleScreenWidth]
[middleScreenHeight]
[middleScreenBezelWidth]
[middleScreenDistanceToPlayerEyes]
[leftScreenWidth]
[leftScreenHeight]
[leftScreenBezelWidth]
[leftScreenAngle]
[rightScreenWidth]
[rightScreenHeight]
[rightScreenBezelWidth]
[rightScreenAngle]

for example: -triScr 62 34 2 60 52 29 2 45 51 29 2 45

Looking forward to triple screen support? Happy to see Sector3 developing this area of the sim? Let us know in the comments section below!

Proper triple screen support is a lot more complicated - it means essentially rendering three separate images, one for each monitor, that take into account the angle of the monitors and stuff like that to give you a geometrically correct, non-stretched image for your seating position.
Thanks Martin for the excellent explanation and link to video, and to everyone who contributes their experiences as I am learning how to improve my driving with adjustments I have made to FFB and FOV. Looking at the left screen is wacky wonky and now explains why I miss the apex at the hairpin at Suzuka  on R3E. I am really looking forward to the update and hopefully my GTX 970 will handle it all in stride. I set up my monitors around a 45 degree angle to the center and distance eyes to monitor is 30" (76cm) the horizontal height is slightly below center from eye level. I used the FOV calculator on Immersion Project and adjusted slightly for personal preference.

I don't think you need to worry too much about your GPU. I don't regularly use triple screen with my GTX 970 as my setup only has two monitors, but I've tried connecting a third one on a few occassions and the games ran without any real issues at solid 60 fps as usual, maybe with slightly lowered graphics options in some cases, but R3E has tons of room to spare in this regard (well unless you're using nVidia inspector to force some advanced AA or something).

Great news I like many others stopped playing because of this. Playing it in VR isn't that great compared to other sims so I still use my triples quite a bit.. It's also nice when you have friends over who can't do VR and proper triple screen support is the next best thing. Thanks for not forgetting about us guys with trips.

That post implies they will support side monitors that are different sizes to the center monitor. Are there any other sims that support monitors of different sizes? I currently have a 35" center and 24" side monitors (while I wait to buy a vr hmd).

Cheers,

Esotic

Ha...I think we've all been there when starting out in sim racing. An old end table, some unfinished lumber, duct tape or whatever else we could find laying around to piece together a working rig. I know I did.
Yep, I personally have a few backed books behind my pedals to stop them slipping away! I only took the wheels off my chair a few months ago :D:D

never even knew that RRRE was missing such a crucial feature
I assume you haven't read many RD forum threads about R3E:cool: Regardless of the topic it has been mentioned Ad nauseum. I used the "strecthed" version on three screens for years (nvidia) and never noticed a big problem, but then I have to say I'm not really too worried about all the little technical details of getting the image picture perfect. I use VR now and really enjoy the immersion even though the image isn't perfect in any of the games that support it. I have to say though that the VR in R3E is done well and at least you can operate the game via menus without taking the headset off.

Really glad they did this though, so now maybe we won't hear about it in every thread  !!

OMG I love all those options! I'm not running 3 screens on any game because I can't afford buying 3 identical screens but I have a few unused smaller monitors... if this works well I might just stop playing other sims and drop some money into R3E

Just FYI, pCars2 offers the possibility to use different sized monitors too.

Also they usually have a really good Black Friday sale on all their content. I bought everything they offer for around $60.
