For the most popular international touring car series, the 2012 season will be the 13th since its revival back in 2000. And the motor-racing enthusiasts may look forward to an even more thrilling DTM season and quite a number of innovations: BMW, the third German premium-car manufacturer, is going to make its DTM comeback to battle it out with Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The high-tech touring cars competing in DTM always have been among the most fascinating vehicles in international motor racing. The rear-wheel drive, powered by 480bhp, the roaring sound of the V8 engines and the spectacular appearance speak for themselves. And in 2012, all the three manufacturers will contest the season with all new DTM vehicles: the Audi A5 DTM, BMW M3 DTM and DTM AMG Mecedes C-Coupé.

Yes a lot of people are probably over-reacting a bit, but the fact remains that the cars aren't safe enough.
I still believe that if you had 15 Formula One cars in that crash, that there would've been 1. No Fatalities, and 2. No Fire.

Rubbish.....any car hitting an immobile object at that speed would burst into flame, and I'm sure the end result would have been similar as theres a whole set of factors to take into account (the way the car hit the fence/debris etc etc) - Only reason it wouldnt be is that Formula One is such a spread out yawn-fest these days that 15 cars wouldnt be in the same section of track after the first corner (even the F1 commentators get "over" excited when two cars are in close proximity

Thought i'd share this with readers here, one of the nice things about sim racing is that no-one gets hurt. It's very rare in real life Motorsport but can happen as we have seen recently .. and it's not just race drivers ...

I have held off publically uploading this video until I was 100% sure the marshal who was injured in this collision was well on his way to recovery and he and the rest of the marshalling community would not be distressed by it's release. I have spoken to many marshals and senior figures in the marshalling community and the consensus is that there is no problem publishing this video. I have been able, by a 3rd party to pass on my best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured marshal and ensure that he has no objection to this video being posted.

These guys do a fabulous job and ALL racers were shocked by this injury and I know they echo my thoughts.

To the incident itself I was going through Maggotts at over 110mph when the back of the car just 'snapped' the next thing I know I was looking at the wall, thankfully missing it and ending in the gravel tracp at Becketts.

It was clear I couldn't drive out so the marshals were attempting to recover me when another car, a Ginetta G50 driven by a good friend and ex team mate of mine came hurtling towards me at high speed and smashed into the front end of my Civic Type-R. The camera was mounted on the passenger side (see inset) so doesnt give my view which was that the Ginetta was coming straight for me. I really thought i'd be waking up in hospital after this but thankfully the gravel had turned the Ginetta a little as it headed towards me and the impact was lessened, registering just 1.3g.

Both car were back out in the race a couple of hours later and we both finished. I have sought information on the marshals condition and am told he is recovering very well.

The riders from all three categories joined in a lap of honor for Marco, with ex 500cc champ Kevin Schwantz riding the number 58
Honda Gresini RC212V. I have to say the last few seconds of the video got to me the most....

RIP. This seems to be really common in South American Motorsport, all the series' over there seem to be made up of cars which just explode in any kind of impact. They really need to get their **** together and upgrade the safety of their tracks and cars. On a slightly different note, them some ugly cars

Sad event to see, RIP to him and his family.
It looks like it might have been a different outcome with some proper marshalls there. Would also have helped if drivers slowed down at a accident seen. First time in a seriously long time i have also seen spectators on a track, even under red flag.
Wonder what (if any thing) the FIA has to say

Slim Domit, son of the world's richest man Carlos slim, who's worth an estimated £47 billion ($74b), believes a return to Mexico is a no-brainer for Formula 1.

The country hasn't had a race since 1992 when the final race in Mexico City took place, won by the dominant Nigel Mansell, but with a renewed interest thanks to the likes of Sergio Perez, Slim believes the sport should return in the very near future.

"I embrace the idea and believe that a new race for Mexico is what, in colloquial English, is referred to as a 'no-brainer'," Domit told the FIA in Motion magazine.
"Mexico has long been close to Formula 1, closer to it indeed than it has been to many other racing series that have visited the country.

"The rise of a new generation of Mexican racers has only served to boost the interest in Formula 1. We not only have Sergio Perez impressing at Sauber, but waiting in the wings is another star, Esteban Gutierrez. He is a Formula 1 star in the making."

The businessman has been working with CIE entertainment in a bid to see the sport return, a move which is backed by Bernie Ecclestone.

Slim Domit says a race in Mexico, following the Canadian and US GP's would make sense, as it would then lead onto the Brazilian GP in South America.

"Linking races in Canada and the US with a Mexican round would perfectly consolidate Formula 1's footprint in North and Central America and provide a viable bridge to the race in Brazil," he added.
