For some time now, a few staff here at RD have been talking about getting together, having a few beers and going to a race meet. Well, this weekend just passed, thats exactly what happened. Mr De Wildt, Stephenson, Vickers and myself attended the Historic Gold Cup Races at Oulton Park......As usual it was a cold, wet and windy summers day here in good old England, we had just parked the car and were walking towards the paddock (open to the public as is customary for historic events) when we were greeted by the distinctive growl of a big V8, a fine omen of what was to come.

The sights, sounds and smell of a historic race meet are emotive and unique, the heady sweet scent of Castrol R, the induction sounds of side draught Webber and Dellorto carbs, the bark of 'real' engines all build to make a very special setting! Some of the cars may well be 30-40 years old, but they are still very impressive today. Lola's, Astons, March's and many more are still driven in a very competitve set of races, often driven by well known names from the past.

The sight and sound of a Repco V8 powered Lola 332 Formula 5000 car being hurled through Knickerbroock's chicane and then powering up Clayhill, loosing grip and spinning its wheels as it crests the peak under the footbridge is as spectacular today as it was in 1973!

The list of classic racing cars was endless, from very tightly contested Formula Ford events and wonderful Historic touring cars boasting huge fields Cortina's, Jags, Alfa's, Mini's, Mustangs, Falcons and Imp's to Formula 5000 monsters and some of the most beuatiful GT cars made. For my old eyes, this was the heyday and golden era of motorsport.

Rally fans were not to be dissapointed either, an impressive range of classics ran the tarmac rally course all day. Escorts, Minis, Quatros, 6R4 Metros and more slid and slew thier way around the slippery track.

In all, if you ever have the chance to attend such a race meet, grab it! Its not just the cars and the spectacular racing, its the whole atmosphere, being able to freely walk about the pits and paddock area's, talking to the drivers and car owners.

And yes, GT Legends will be out tonight also!

Great report and pictures. I live near Knockhill but have never been to a race meet there (I've used the cart track, though!). Think I'll need to check their calendar.

Judie Lyons is so slow!, she shouldn't be allowed to race. How did she obtain a racing licence? :)

You didn't stay for the last race then?

The sound of those F5000's is even great over the telephone :) I got the priviledge to hear them pass by while I was on the phone with Remco, and it sounded great indeed.

Did you all make pictures? I had heard that the photographer was so used to seeing tail lights, he took a lot of pictures from behind. Only see a few of those here :p :p

Good to hear you all had some fun! Just let me know when I need to drop Remco at the airport again for the next visit :)

The appointment of Bruno Senna has already delivered two new sponsors to the Renault team.

ith Nick Heidfeld contentiously stepped down before Spa-Francorchamps, Senna fended off speculation his sponsors had paid for the race seat. "If you look at the team then there are no new logos on the car or on myself," he insisted.
But that was before Sunday, when on the grid Brazil's Globo Esporte spotted two new logos.

One belongs to the major Brazilian oil company OGX, headed by business baron Eike Batista da Silva who is the eighth richest person in the world.
A spokesman for Senna, the nephew of Brazil's famous triple world champion Ayrton Senna, confirmed the deal with the holding company EBX.

The other new logo on the black Renault in Belgium was the razor brand Gillette.

Globo said both sponsors "were negotiating with (Senna) for the 2012 season" but the Heidfeld replacement "accelerated the deals".
After impressively qualifying seventh at Spa, Senna finished outside the points due to smashing into Jaime Alguersuari at the first corner and receiving a drive-through penalty.
He will definitely race at Monza next weekend.

Geoff Steel Motorsport will be rejoining the BTCC grid for the final 3 rounds with Tony Gilham in a BMW 320si. The car will use the normally aspirated engine at Rockingham, but will be fitted with an NGTC spec engine for the final 2 races in preperation for next season.

Article is here: http://www.touringcartimes.com/article.php?id=6677

Should be interesting to see how the NGTC engine does with the BMW chassis, though Gilham may not be the best candidate to show off it's proper performance!!
