Michael Schumacher

Where I obviously hope Schumi will get better soon, I remain very sceptical about the press release.

6 months in a specialist hospital with no real improvement does not bode well. Reading the release carefully does not say much either. It simply says he is no longer in a coma, which they announced back in April. This could mean a variety of things, from being conscious (unlikely) through being in a vegetative state (best likely scenario) to simply responding to the environment, such as finger movements in response to touch etc.

It also simply says he has been released from the Grenoble hospital. What it does not say is that it is to move to another hospital in Switzerland, which is 30km away from his home so he can be nearer his family.

Personally, I think the announcement was not of much significance, but instead the media putting their usual spin on things to create a story. This left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth as it is disrespectful to Schumi, his family and his fans, the majority of which genuinely care about his well being, don't want to be misled and respect his family's desire for privacy in this traumatic time for them.

All in all, I don't think this statement changes much. If anything, it may be a sign of 'giving up' in getting him to move closer to home to make it easier on the family as staying in Grenoble, the specialist hospital, will no longer be of any benefit to him.

Sorry if this sounds negative, but I think sometimes you have to be a realist about things, no matter how much you cling onto the hope that one of your heroes and legends will improve his health. I personally will always love Schumi and he will always be one of the legendary drivers that got me hooked on F1.

Came here to post the same!
You beat me  :D

However, my look on the things cannot be negative although i stay being realistic about how bad looks. Few things are clear to me, he is Michael Schumacher he is a 7 time world champion of F1 but not a machine or a robot, certainly not superman.
But whatever happens all i know is that around him is the best possible care that could possibly be bought or received, therefore, i cannot think of anything else BUT that the specialist are doing or DID the best possible options for him and got out the best. Kept in coma for that long just so they be sure, and minimize his possible after-effects.

That's how and in what i want to believe...

Having said that to me is not possible that someone like Schumacher cannot recover. Not now, he might get on his feet in 3 years in 5 years, but i am sure he will. He has survived a heavy head accident, spend 6 months in coma and now he is out of it and his wife was smiling few days ago. I cannot think she is smiling because he has no hope, because he is going to be in permanent vegetative state.

He is reacting to people voice faces answers etc. How i understood it is that, that gives sign how good is someones recovery after such a heavy crash. Some people were not able to do it, showing signs of heavy damaging. If Schumacher couldn't respond or understand what they were saying to him, or touch him and he wouldn't feel it etc, THEN that would be a hell of a problem! He certainly cannot just get out of coma, spend 1 month in bed, and go out and drive a F1 car.
He might be in bed for whole year, he might be on his feet in next 5 years but the fact that he is able to understand, to feel pain, to move his fingers on feet and hands etc, it's a signal that his brain maybe is not that bad. It takes time.
Maybe i am wrong, maybe i am no real, but that's how i want to believe it is and must be!
He cannot jump out of bed and run but there are signals that he might do that after a while.
I really hope he does!

Someone should just shut this guy, he has been talking way too much, so called "F1 doctor". Acting like an attention whore ever since, there is little trust to his words.
please do tell me more.... do you have more experience then him? more knowledge then him?

the guy speaks sense, and i would agree with him, because his words sound harsh so the general population who has no knowledge of head injuries or how the recovery period works they go by the doctors who say its amazing and so encouraging, indeed it is amazing that he's starting to respond, but it's basic commands.

Understand this, being in a coma for a longer period of time "recovery state" is ok, but 6 months if a long time, which decreases the chances of a full recovery (what does full recovery mean?) well no1 will ever know for certain, not even the doctors or experts can tell you that, truly no1 knows to what extent the damage truly is, only time will tell.

being in a coma for 2-3 months, increases the chances of making a full recovery with less amount of damage to the brain or body, ofcourse there can still be permanent problems like speech effected or movement (depends where he hit his head)

and then there's infections & bugs which patients catch in hospital (also being still in a bed & not moving increases the chances of chest infections, which in his state is not good at all)

although Schumacher is responding (im going by what the media has reported so far) , he's condition is minimal vegative state, he's not out the woods at all, baby steps, from where he is now

More likely he just love to appear in the news. No one have full picture except Michaels personal doctors and his close relatives. Everything else is just a speculation, disgusting and frustrating for Michaels family and supporters.

I'd like to think that a world renowned Professor of Anestheology would have a pretty accurate idea on what Michael's condition is likely to be. Given that Michael was placed deeply under anaesthetic for months.

I think he's one of the very few people in the world who should be allowed to
share his views and opinions.

He knows what he's talking about and he undoubtedly has known Michael personally for many years.

The seven-time World Champion was placed in a medically induced coma after suffering severe head injuries during a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013.

Schumacher's life is believed to have been saved by the helmet he was wearing at the time of the accident, which split in two upon impact.

In June it was announced he had been woken-up and had been transferred to the University Hospital of Lausanne, in the west of Switzerland close to the family home on the shore of Lake Geneva.

A statement released by Schumacher’s management said progress had been made in the last few weeks and months and that doctors had now released him to continue his recovery at home.

“Henceforth, Michael’s rehabilitation will take place at his home,” the statement issued by manager Sabine Kehm read.

“Considering the severe head injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months. There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to the entire team at CHUV Lausanne for their thorough and competent work.

“We ask that the privacy of Michael’s family continue to be respected, and that speculations about the state of his health are avoided.”

The F1 fraternity have been united in wishing Schumacher well since he suffered his injuries with the German's former Mercedes team carrying a message of 'KeepFightingMichael' on their cars since the start of the season.
