I call England the U.K. because I can't be bothered to type out England.
England = England, a part of the United Nations member nation called United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
United Kingdom = a nation constituted by the former nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
So you see if you call a Scotish "British" is correct (at least for now until they decide in 2014), but if you call him English is wrong and can be even offensive
