That was a lot of fun! Thanks to all who participated.
I went the Bouke route this week as I didn't practice much beforehand. Not really my choice as I got sick over the weekend. So when Wednesday came around I watched a video of someone setting a 2:06.5xx or something. Grabbed their setup and tried to copy the line. That seemed to have worked as I went 1.5s faster after I got used to how much it wanted to turn. I'll be experimenting with setups like this in the future.
Had a great qualy being the fastest Mazda, but as usual Allan just torpedoed off the line so the chase was on. At the start I didn't want to fight Allan and just grow the gap behind us and get settled in the race. A few laps in, I saw Allan going a bit deep into the last corner and this set me up for a chance in T1. The man squeezed me so hard (but fair) that I couldn't get past him, so I awaited my next chance.
The Suzuki's were gaining on us though. First Jason, then Paul. And all the while I was struck with doubt. Should I fight the Suzuki's and possibly let Allan get away? Or should I let them pass whilst trying to lose as little time as possible?
At the last possible moment before turn 1, having Jason right on my ass, I decided I would let him by. It resulted in braking a bit too late, but it all worked out in the end.
But then I saw Allan defending his position vs Jason and I started doubting myself again as Paul was nearing me. This time I decided to defend the position. At one of the last corners I chose the inside line, thinking it would slow the Suzuki down enough so I could get ahead. But he just went around and sped past me! I'm used to how much grip the Suzuki has, but it still caught me by surprise.
With the Suzuki's now in front, I set my sights back on Allan again. Saw him pit 2.4s in front of me and I decided to try an overcut. But as I was speeding towards the first chicane I was watching the relatives so I could determine how much time I had to gain. When I got my eyes back on track I was staring at the wrong marker and missed the corner. I saw Bouke approaching and decided to stay off track for a bit longer to not hinder him. In hindsight I had enough time to still get back on track. I was bummed out because I felt I really had a chance to beat Allan and I don't get that chance very often.
Some laps later I saw Allan suddenly dropping like 8 seconds and this motivated me to push hard again. I was gaining on Bouke and right before we would've had a fight I decided to pit. Nothing personal Bouke, I swear.
If I had any chance to still fight Allan, I couldn't afford losing time fighting others. Right after I came out of the pit, I was regretting my choice as I saw Allan 10s in front of me. So no fight with Allan and now no fight with Bouke either...
Or so I thought! Bouke pitted after me and got behind me, but he was gaining pace and eventually got within a second. It was back to pushing again because I would've lost another position. It was going quite well until I came out of a corner a bit too fast and touched the grass which spun me around, missing Bouke by a hair.
With 15 minutes to go I had to set qualy times each lap to have a chance to win back the position. But Bouke proved to be consistent and managed the gap quite well, deservedly winning P2 within class.
Which reminds me.. I've seen some great improvements throughout the entire grid the last few races. Bouke has been getting more consistent and it's showing since he's ending up higher on the grid. Maybe I should try lapping Nords more. It seems to work out
Another driver that's making great strides is Ricardo. I already noticed this the last few races as his pace was going up. But what stood out to me in this race is that he's improving his fighting spirit! There were times I really had to concentrate and push to defend the position. My heart rate definitely went up when I saw him approaching in the mirror.
Keep it up guys! You're making this more fun and interesting.
Sorry about the long post. See it as compensation for not writing anything the last few weeks.
Thanks again everyone. Congrats to the podiums. Hope to see you next Wednesday!
