I doubt they will ever go but if they do I wouldn't mind seeing a Ferrari or two entered in LMP1. Then again, given their reliability issues in F1 this year maybe endurance racing wouldn't be their forte.
Their GTE and GT3 racers seem to do just fine.
As for LMP1, yeah I would like to have Ferrari in there, to save what is an interesting car Class, far more interesting than F1 Cars imho.
I mean the racing this F1 season was better than in the years before, and the Mercs actually had competition this time, but the F1 cars aren't that interesting anymore atleast when you compare it to LMP1.
Ferrari could maybe even run a V12 there with Hybrid.
And I'm not too sure about the MGU-H being removed in F1, as a system like MGU-H has been a tactical advantage for Porsche in the WEC.
However the idea of storing the energy is interesting, imagine saving up under safety car, and then having energy for some absolute fliers afterwards.
And I like watching the WEC and endurance racing a lot more, given that there is more action and more drama there than in F1.
And especially in GT racing it's a good show close racing with chances for all and awesome finishes, just look at the Battle for Class Victory in GTE Pro at this year's 24h of Le Mans.
24h hours and the winning pass is in the last corner of the penultimate lap!
I've recently been watching the Season reviews of the nineties and early noughties (2000's) again and even though Ferrari dominated at some parts, they always had competition, and even the midfield runners did compete for the podium at some times.
Now it's mostly Mercedes+Ferrari and maybe a Redbull on the podium, unless something unforseen happens.
I was also looking at the 2004 season, and despite Ferrari dominance, mostly on reliability grounds, there was something I really liked, the one-shot (one lap) qualifying over two days.
Why?
Well, it did really mix up the field, Alonso for example started a few races from the rear, because he messed up his lap.
With the system as it is now, they can usually hammer out enough laps until they are good enough.
Getting that one-shot qualifying back, would add some unpredictability.
I would agree on the engines though, one of the things that Bug me about the DTM is that these cars have nothing to do with the base models, the Chassis is spec, the electronics are spec and the engine is spec.
A Ferrari should have a Ferrari Engine, same as a merc should have a Merc Engine, it's part of what makes GT racing for example exciting, that every manufacturer has their own engine.....and that they vary in type.
I would just love to see the data that shows that Formula E is getting more popular, I have hear claims like that but never see data going with it.
And the question is also if it gets more popular with the motorsport fans, those that are here to stay, or if it's just another "trend sport" another fad, for the hipsters that will fade once something else is hip.
