Familiar Top Three as New Qualifying Format Falls Flat on its Face

Quote from BBC F1 news says it all for me.
"We wanted to improve the show and we went in the wrong direction," Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said.
Again another one of the dark lord of F1's Stupid idea's Berrnie wish this guy would really step down what next drawing straws for grid placings.

Its not a Show FFS its a sport sport is not about making it look good for TV reality is Talent will always win even with half good equipment .

Still F1 ones master of all will not except that the problem lies within the crappy rules that have strangled almost all innovation out of the sport . the rules are to limiting & should be opened up to allow radical changes to both engine & the overall car package & not this circus scripted for TV crap that we have now, were its almost a one make formula in engine design & car looks & layout.

F1 needs to take a look backwards to see what made it so popular in the past before the days of mass media TV coverage.
When at almost every race some body would turn up with a car trying some crazy idea out that is what made the sport .

These days is seems hell bent on self destruction running around like some headless chicken grasping at one wild idea after another in an attempt to bring back the golden age of racing.

The sport was made by risk tacker like Cooper . Lotus . Tyrrell . Brabham & Ferrari & many more who bent the rules or just saw through the rules to make exciting racing cars piloted by brave drivers.

F1 one as been lost for a long time now. I hope it will find its way again soon & get back to racing & not trying to make a good TV program.

Well. Graham Hill said in 1969. That he was unhappy with some of the rule-changes. But he understood it. It wasn't just a bunch of elderly guys, having a funride in some fast car. It was a show that people paid for, that they were in a way, in the showbusiness. It's been like it for many years. It's just been taken to another level, to try to get in even more money. Like everything in the world these days. It's about a constant growth.

They are keeping the farce for the next race now.

:/ poor.

What a f***ing joke F1 is turning out to be.
I loved the sport...followed it for the last 45 years.
These 'Hail-Mary' decisions are absolutely asinine and simply turning people off in droves.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with the qualifying format a second set of 'free' to be handed back tires wouldn't have solved.
Every single "idiotic" rule of late has contributed to the loss of spectators and the lack of cars on track....(the penalties for gearbox and engine failure...the extreme complexity of cars in an attempt to look 'green'....the jacked up ticket prices).
The jackass are simply not listening.

What F1 really needs is more focus on money, specifically on making more of it for the richest who pull the strings/own it. That will improve the racing.

FIA's proposal for new qualifying format likely to be even more of a turn off.

Though Jean Todt insisted reporters be patient and wait until Thursday for details of his proposed new qualifying format, details are already beginning to emerge... and it's not good.

It is understood the new format would see each driver's best two times added together and their final time being based on the aggregate. This would be the format for each sector.

Consequently, instead of the absolutely rubbish system at present, whereby viewers are left to watch empty tarmac for minutes on end and drivers are already walking down the pitlane or to their motorhomes before being officially declared eliminated, we would have a format whereby viewers would need to sit waiting with a calculator.

Instead of the sheer thrill of watching a last minute pole-grabbing banzai lap, a la Lewis Hamilton yesterday, fans would need to have the details of his previous best lap in order to do the math.

Indeed, as Tobi Grüner of Auto Motor und Sport points out, based on the proposed format Nico Rosberg would be on pole today.

It's as if someone is deliberately trying to come up with the worst format ever.

Qualifying by aggregating times always sucks. It makes a little bit more sense in WEC with multiple drivers but is terrible for people at trackside and makes it even less likely that you will have any upsets in the qualifying order.
