German Grand Prix - Hockenheim
In the early 2000s, F1 officials demanded the 6.8 km (4.2 mi) track be shortened and threatened to discontinue racing there, due to competition from other tracks such as the
EuroSpeedway Lausitz and sites in Asia. The state government of
Baden-Württemberg secured the financing for the redesign by
Hermann Tilke for the
2002 German Grand Prix. The stadium section remained mostly intact, despite a new surface and a tighter Turn 1 ("Nordkurve"). However, the circuit was dramatically shortened, with the long, forest straights section chopped off in favour of more tight corners. In an extremely controversial move, the old forest section was torn up and replanted with trees, eliminating any chance of using the old course either for future F1 events or for historic car events. There was and still remains a great deal of criticism of the track redesign, in terms of ruining the previous unique technical challenges of the old Hockenheim circuit and delivering a new homogenised 'assembly line' circuit without the character of the previous layout, whilst being beset by the perceived problems of other Tilke circuits.
[1] Several drivers and team principals, including
Ron Dennis,
Jarno Trulli and
Juan Pablo Montoya criticised the changes and stated their preference for the old circuit.

This track is pretty short, therefore you can be looking at doing laptimes almost as quick as Monaco, there are 13 corners here.
Good points
- The track seems pretty flat, also most curbs are not too difficult to drive over.
- There are not many areas where walls can come into play and damage your car
Bad Points
- Plenty of sand traps around this circuit, if you get it wrong.
- Not many overtaking places, only place i can think of is at the end of the long straight
- The last sector is tricky, the road becomes really thin, it is almost impossible to overtake anyone through there, or even let them through as a backmarker.
Corners
Nordkurve (1) - Not a difficult corner, however it is easy to become complacent and either cut the track, or run wide, you should be going through here full throttle.
Turn 2 - Braking from gear 7, this corner always causes trouble, it can be an overtaking place, it is imperative you get this right though or you will lose a lot of time for what is to come.
Turn 3 - Not a difficult corner, full throttle through here to end sector 1 and begin your run down the Parabolika
Hairpin (4) - Definitely the overtaking place on the track, also this is the slowest corner on the track, it is very easy to end up running into the back of someone, or running wide on the exit, you will lose a ton of time if you get this wrong as there is another speedy section to follow.
Turn 5 - This is like turn 3, full throttle, if you get it wrong here, just go home
Turn 6 - Tricky technical corner, some players attempt to overtake into here and more often then not it will end in failure for both drivers, the inside curb can sometimes catch you out so be weary of it, if you run wide, there is a small run off area but once again you may end up spinning on the outside curb, this one can definitely kill your laptime.
Turn 7 - You should be getting as wide to the left after turn 6 to enter through this at full throttle, if your having to brake for this your doing it all wrong, this is probably my favourite corner of the track, not sure why
Mobil 1 (8) - I do not like this corner, for one huge reason, if you get it wrong there is a sand trap the size of an ocean, also if you get on the curb wrong you might spin off to the wall on the right hand side, absolute precision and courage is needed if you want to get this correct every time.
Sachs (9) - This corner is probably my fave slow speed corner, it is not too difficult, you got to get this correct though or you will end up on the grass or having a hard time through the final part of this lap.
10 & 11 - Should definitely be full throttle through both of these, it is a technical part of the circuit, it is absolutely impossible to overtake anyone through these last corners, even backmarkers should not try to slow down through here, wait for the start-finish straight!
12 - Get on the left hand side and sweep in, you may need to break just a little, be prepared to hit a sand trap if you fail through here.
13 - The last corner separates good drivers from bad drivers, at low fuel you should be pretty much going full throttle, and attacking the hell out of it and planting the car on the curb on the left hand side of the straight, if you find yourself braking heavily just to get round here, you need some more practice
