AC BTCC cars performance test

Assetto Corsa Racing Club event
My view from lower down the food chain...

Just modified gearing and tyre pressures and done about 15 mins in each

BMW 2:11.9 1st Choice
Lot of fun straight out of the box. Well behaved in the corners and the rear is fairly planted and drivable. I could find some more time quite easily.

Volvo 2:14.0 2nd Choice
Rear end is a lot more loose in this car so I wasn't able to drive it as hard as the BMW. I'm sure there are setup changes that would help but I'm not skilled enough to know what to do atm. Still fun to drive.

Nissan 2:17.2 3rd Choice
Least favourite car as it seems to want to kill me on every corner. The rear end is very loose. Again, I'm probably missing some key setup change.

I'm sure a championship in these cars would be fun.

Ok so, I used my usual research method when trying new vehicles, which is hot lapping at Brands Hatch INDY (short but demanding track, with lap-times under the minute) using only the DEFAULT setup. My experience pretty much agrees with everyone's assessment regarding car behaviour and handling.

Nissan Primera (49.218) :
Moody and snappy, needs tweaking to get it to do what you want.

Volvo S40 (47.793) :
Feisty but planted, once you get a hand of its limits you can go properly fast.

BMW 320i (48.817) :
Tail-happy but stable, a proper RWD that does what you want until you hit the edge.

I think we can have these cars as an option for Multiclass once a month to test it as a prospect. And definitely worth to do that at original BTCC circuits. Fastest guys on the Primera though! ;)

Tried the Primera at Thomson circuit, it to me, seems more like driver error that causes massive oversteer, unfortunately it is very subtle, get your line slightly wrong and it is curtains.
A double problem is that the Primera really makes you attack the circuit, this does in its self cause problems.
I do not know what the times are for the Volvo and Bmw, but the primera seems to fly around this circuit. But the times of the other two cars may put, unfortunately, this into its correct perspective.
PS.
had two of these a Primera eGT a grey one and white one, great cars they were too.
Two of my most memorable cars, you think of them as ordinary jap cars, but they are far far from that.:)

So after more testing and tweaking im going with the Volvo..After seeing a time that @Shed 17 put up i was scratching my head.....but as above i put a time in of 1;53.190,sorry Paul i had to go for it..:D
I knew there was a target on my back after that one Al, :D but like you I have switched to the Volvo. it will be interesting though, the S40 is quick but it will try to take out the lampposts if you aren’t on it all the while.

This is not a criticism just an observation. As much as I love the Primera, trying to keep it on track and be competive is a tall order for me.
i have done my best with the setups to try and calm the old girl, but to no avail.
Tried it at brands Hatch GP, even a circuit does not cure anything, just more room to deal with the many big moments.
I will always pick it over a rear wheel drive and definitely tend to run it, just wondered if anyone has had more success than I have had.

Today I tried all three cars for 6 laps with race fuel on mediums.
  • Primera: second slower than the other two but for me also the hardest to drive so less confidence and therefore probably more potential for improvement.
  • Volvo: Very nice drive and setting my fastest time with it but I'm less consistent with it compared to the BMW
  • BMW: just a little bit slower than the Volvo but less tricky therefore more consistency.
Conclusion: If I have time tomorrow I will try to see if I can get more confidence with the Volvo. If so I'll probably switch to the S40. If not, I'll stick with the 320.

Not tried either of the other two Han, so I am stuck with the FWD Primera in this event.
After this I may jump ship to the easier RWD cars.
It should prove a very interesting race.:)
