It may be worth having a look at the "LFS style" track map display, it colours the cars depending on if you're in front or behind them. Works pretty well for me also in MP, it only got confused once so far when somebody pitted and rejoined the race afterwards. It would be an easy way to get rid of some of the confusion caused by the lack of a flag system.
