Not sure, maybe you don't own a car from the right class? Either that or you have upgrades which the server doesn't allow.

Yes, I do own a car. At first I didn't but now I do. Both times I got same error message and boot.
It also works offline in testing session.

I have the same problem as Hansi. Also, curiously, there is no list of cars to select from prior to joining, but the Mini I'm in at the time is there on the rotator thing. I 'own' 2 of the Minis so that can't be it.
