Championship leader Carlos Checa has won the second superbike race at Assen to continue his excellent start to the 2011 WSB season.
The Spaniard led for the majority of the race after choosing a softer compound tyre for the second race. Second place finisher Max Biaggi, on hard compound tyres, stayed with Checa for the entirety of the race and started to close the gap in the latter stages of the race as Checa's softer tyres became more worn.
With three laps to go Biaggi passed Checa, and it looked as if he was on course for his first win of 2011, with Checa's Ducati struggling for grip.
Checa had other ideas though, and passed Biaggi on the brakes into the final chicane on the penutimate lap, forcing the Italian to sit up and settle for second.
Race one winner Jonathan Rea was unable to keep pace with the front runners, and had to settle for third place onboard the Castrol Honda. Marco Melandri was pressuring Jonathan Rea, but crashed on lap 15.
Starting from ninth on the grid Leon Camier had a much better second race, fighting through the pack to finish fourth ahead of Leon Haslam and Eugene Laverty in fifth and sixth respectively.
Early race leader Noriyuki Haga quickly went backwards once Checa and Biaggi got passed and eventually finished eighth.

Race One was very exciting to watch, very close between 1st and then the battle for 5th aswell. Thought Race Two was quite uninteresting; not much overtaking for Superbike standard, good to see Jonny winning again; but Checa has one hand on the championship title already I think.

Haslam storms to the front in Monza qualifying

WOW 206.6 mph from Biaggi's Aprilia unreal.....

Leon Haslam stormed to the top of the timesheets onboard his BMW Motorrad S1000RR in qualifying at Monza today. The 27 year old Brit held first position for the majority of the session until Max Biaggi stole the top spot with four minutes to go. But with his final lap of the session, Haslam responded to Biaggi’s time to take provisional pole position by just 0.019s.
Max Biaggi's impressive second fastest time was helped by the fact that he set the fastest ever top speed in WSB history during his best lap. The 39 year old Italian blasted down the long front straight at 332.5KPH or 206.6mph.
Third place went to Eugene Laverty onboard the factory Yamaha who impressed once again with his raw speed since switching to WSB.
BMW Motorrad Italia rider Ayrton Badovini was the surprise of the day qualifying his privateer bike in fourth place ahead of established stars Jonathan Rea, Noriyuki Haga and Marco Melandri.
James Toseland posted 14 laps to finish in 19th place just two seconds off the pace, despite riding with a badly swollen and painful hand having only had the four pins removed from it less than one week ago.

Biaggi smashes best lap record to secure pole

World Champion Max Biaggi annihilated his own best lap record of Monza to secure pole position for Sunday’s two 18 lap races. The factory Alitalia Aprilia rider led the final Superpole session comfortably before using his final qualifying tyre to set a new best lap and jump 0.648 seconds clear of his rivals.
Biaggi’s pole position was the first of 2011 and only the third during his WSB career.
Biaggi said: “I’m really happy, this is the first Italian race of the year and Monza is a track that always has a very special atmosphere. I was able to use the qualifying tyre in the right way, but this is one thing, the important thing is the two races tomorrow.”

Second place went to Irishman Eugene Laverty who backed up his impressive weekend long pace to secure his place on the front row of the grid. The factory Yamaha rider has made ongoing changes to his R1 and now looks smooth and comfortable on the Superbike.
Jonathan Rea stepped up to the mark in Superpole to secure his place on the front row and will be joined by a rejuvenated Troy Corser onboard the BMW.
Marco Melandri did well to tame his lose Yamaha R1 to secure fifth spot ahead of hard charging Brit Leon Haslam, Michel Fabrizio and Noriyuki Haga.

Championship leader Carlos Checa can expect a tough day at the office tomorrow after qualifying for the two races in 11th place and on the third row of the grid. He’ll be joined by Brit Leon Camier who was unable to match his impressive free practice pace during Superpole.
Kawasaki men Joan Lascorz and Tom Sykes suffered a major setback for race day when neither men were able to qualify in the top 12 despite showing strong pace earlier in the day. As a result both riders will line-up on the fourth row alongside Jakub Smrz and Maxime Berger.
James Toseland will not race tomorrow and Chris Vermeulen will make a decision in the morning on whether he will compete following his heavy crash on Friday.

Laverty takes first WSB win

Factory Yamaha rider Eugene Laverty has taken his first victory in World Superbikes after dominating race one at Monza today.
Laverty took the lead on the second lap, but pole-setter Max Biaggi was right with him, the speed of the Yamaha no match for the Aprilia.
Laverty was able to keep Biaggi at bay on the brakes, and after eight laps Biaggi made a series of mistakes which gave Laverty plenty of breathing space and left the reigning champion battling for a podium with Leon Haslam and Marco Melandri.
Again the speed of the Aprilia got Biaggi out of trouble and he was able to pull away from Haslam and Melandri to finish second.
The battle for the final podium places left Laverty clear to pull away, eventually taking victory by almost two seconds.
Haslam finished third despite being forced off track at turn one twice, first by Biaggi and second by Melandri.
Championship leader Carlos Checa finished ninth after starting from 11th on the grid to keep his place at the top of the standings.
Jonathan Rea had a slow start to the race, but after catching and battling with Troy Corser towards the end of the race finished sixth, behind Michel Fabrizio.

Laverty does the double

By Liam Marsden -MCN

Factory Yamaha rider Eugene Laverty has won both superbikes races at Monza today after Max Biaggi was given a ride through penalty.
Max Biaggi got a good start and pulled away from the rest of the field, opening up a five second lead before he ran straight on at the end of the front straight with seven laps remaining.
The race organisers gave Biaggi a ride through penalty, which lost the Italian 19 seconds and saw him rejoin the race in 12th. Biaggi finished in eighth.
This pushed Marco Melandri up to first, with Laverty close behind in second, now smelling victory. It took a mistake from Melandri on the final corner of the final lap for Laverty to make his move and get the drive to the line to secure his first World Superbike double.
Laverty was tangled up in an incident at the first corner at the start which saw Jonathan Rea, Leon Haslam and Jakub Smrz crash out. Laverty spent the majority of the race working his way through the field after the incident.
Leon Camier was in second place behind Biaggi and comfortably ahead of third place when he crashed out on lap seven.
Suzuki rider Michel Fabrizio took the final step on the podium after a hard fought battle with former team-mate Noriyuki Haga.
Championship leader Carlos Checa finished tenth after slowing on the final lap. This is the first race weekend of the 2011 season where the Spaniard hasn't taken a win.

Checa dominates opening day at Miller

Championship leader Carlos Checa lived up to all the hype that he will be the man to beat by decimating his rivals during the opening free practice and qualifying sessions at Miller.
The Althea Ducat rider overcame two technical problems in the opening free practice session to head the standings and then reasserted his dominance in qualifying to take provisional pole by a massive 0.795 seconds.

Checa said: “We made a great start today despite this morning’s issues. I was able to find a good rhythm almost immediately and the feeling I have here this year with my bike seems to be slightly better than last year. As I said it’s gone quite well today but there is still work to do tomorrow. Results are never a given, also because this weekend it seems that the weather conditions will play an important part. I’m still very optimistic though and we’ll work to make further improvements during tomorrow’s sessions.”

Second position went to a resurgent Leon Camier onboard his Alitalia Aprilia RSV4. The British rider finished second to Checa in both sessions and unlike in recent races was able to get a good amount of track time with a total of 42 laps completed during the day. He finished ahead of his team mate and reigning world champion Max Biaggi.
Factory Kawasaki man Tom Sykes got his season back on track after major disappointment at the previous two rounds of the series to set the fourth fastest time of the day. Troy Corser was another man on form in fifth to finish top BMW.

Jonathan Rea and his Castrol Honda team made a positive start on a circuit where they have previously struggled by ending the day sixth fastest. Rea and his team-mate Ruben Xaus benefited from a two day test at the American circuit last week and while they are still having problems they are clearly in better shape than they were in 2010.
Rea said: “I can certainly see a light at the end of the tunnel with regard to the problems we’ve had here. We’re still losing a lot on speed and while the gearing is working in some places, we’ve got really low rpm in others where we need the speed. I think, all in all, Carlos looks to be in a different league but our target has to be the podium on Monday.”

Monza race winner Eugene Laverty ended the day in eighth after struggling with grip and running down in 18th position for the majority of the timed session.
He said: “I ended up in eighth position which isn’t bad. It’s important to be in the top two rows especially seeing that it’s threatening rain for tomorrow. I was outside the top 16 for a while as I was having difficulty with the front of the bike. We worked on improving the set-up and put in a good time towards the end. I’m sure we have made a break through with the bike today. I was having trouble making the apex in this morning’s free practice but now I’m confident we are heading in the right direction.”

While the majority of the Brits faired well on the opening day it wasn’t easy for BMW men Leon Haslam and James Toseland who qualified down in 16th and 18th places respectively. Having made good progress with the S1000RR in recent testing, Haslam was forced to re-address the engine braking and electronic problems he faced at the beginning of the season. While Toseland was severely hampered by his recent hand injury and subsequent surgery, losing the majority of his time through the five right hand corners on the track, which are still very painful for the 30 year old Brit.
With rain forecast for second qualifying, it’s likely that the first qualifying times will stand until Superpole on Sunday afternoon.

Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) continued his domination at Miller Motorsports Park, snatching pole position back from Jakub Smrz (Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing) in the last lap of the wet, cold and closely contested Superpole.
Yamaha World Superbike team mates Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty complete the front row, starting from third and fourth respectively. Melandri scraped through into SP2 before upping his pace to take third, while Laverty rode consistently to secure his place in the front row of the grid.
Sylvain Guintoli (Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing) will start the first of tomorrow's races in Salt Lake City from fifth, ahead of Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport), Aprilia Alitalia rider Max Biaggi and Ayrtin Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia SBK), who completes the second row. Biaggi rode an inconsistent Superpole, culminating in the Italian running wide in the last lap of SP3 and dropping his Aprilia at low speed.
Kawasaki Racing rider Tom Sykes will start from tenth place, behind Noriyuki Haga (PATA Racing Team Aprilia). Leon Camier (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team) suffered a big highside on cold tyres in SP1 but was able to return to the track on his spare bike to qualify in eleventh place, ahead of Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) who crashed out in the second Superpole session.
Fellow Brit Jonathan Rea will start from thirteenth on the grid, whilst James Toseland qualified in eighteenth place.

Checa wins race one in Utah

By Tom Cambio - MCN
30 May 2011 19:49

Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) won an eventful race one at Miller Motorsports Park, Utah. Leading an all-Ducati podium, Checa took first on the seventh lap and pulled away from the chasing pack, finishing the race with a 2.7s lead ahead of Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing team mates Jakub Smrz and Sylvain Guintoli, who finished in second and third place.
Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) took the holeshot to lead from the start, with Noriyuki Haga (PATA Racing Team Aprilia) charging from ninth on the grid to take second, ahead of Checa. Within the first lap Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia) fell foul of the damp conditions and crashed, taking Irishman Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) out of the race in the process.

Three laps in, Rubens Xaus (Castrol Honda) clipped an inside kerb, losing the front end of his Honda and subsequently crashing into Michel Fabrizio, ending race one for both riders.
Checa battled with Haga for second place, trading places several times before establishing a gap and passing Corser on the inside to take first place in lap seven. This move signalled the end of Corser's podium chances as Haga, Guintoli and Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike Team) followed Checa's example, passing Corser. Guintoli then faced a battle with Laverty for second until Smrz upped the pace, passing Haga and then, in lap fourteen, Laverty. With three laps remaining, Smrz passed Guintoli taking second place and relegating Guintoli to third.

Aprilia Alitalia rider Leon Camier was able to pass Laverty to take fourth, whilst Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) managed to pass Haslam and Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia) to finish in sixth place.
Having challenged for second, Noriyuki Haga ended the race in Utah in ninth, whilst Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team), who qualified third, took tenth place. Initial race leader Troy Corser finished the first race in thirteenth.

Championship leader Carlos Checa (Althea Racing Ducati) completed his consistent domination at Miller Motorsports Park to win the second World Superbike race on a considerably drier track, enabling faster lap times for the Spaniard who led from the start and finished the race with a 7.1s gap ahead of British Aprilia Alitalia rider Leon Camier.
Camier put in a strong performance to secure his best result of the season so far, finishing in front of team mate Max Biaggi who bounced back from his crash in the first race, passing Eugene Laverty (Yamaha World Superbike Team) in lap five to take third place.
Laverty improved on his first race performance to finish fourth, with Fabrizio (Suzuki Alstare) took fifth and Melandri passed Guintoli to secure sixth. Team Effenbert-Liberty Racing team mates Guintoli and Smrz were unable to replicate their race one podium successes, finishing the second race in seventh and eighth respectively.

Badovini (BMW Motorrad Italia) managed to pass Jonathan Rea (Castrol Honda) with four laps remaining, leaving Rea to battle with Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) for tenth place. The two Brits swapped places several times, with a persistent Sykes passing Rea in the last lap to take tenth.
The third lap of the fastest race of the season was littered with crashes; Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) and Noriyuki Haga (PATA Racing Team Aprilia) crashed out of the race, whilst Rubens Xaus (Castrol Honda) fell but was able to remount to finish last.

Checa takes surprise provisional pole

By Michael Guy -MCN
08 July 2011 17:16

Before the weekend Carlos Checa said that he expected to struggle at Brno, but ended up exceeding expectations by setting provisional pole position in the opening qualifying session this afternoon. The 38 year old Spaniard was concerned about the lack of speed of his Althea Ducati on the fast Czech Republic track, but was actually the fastest man through four of the five individually timed sectors that make up the lap.
Speaking to MCN, Checa said: “I’m a little bit surprised but saying that we know that when we put our minds on the job we can achieve good results. I still think it will be hard to race with the Yamaha’s and off course Biaggi on the Aprilia.
"The lap time I did was better than we expected but it is just one lap and maybe I used a tyre that the others did not use. I did some laps with Biaggi and in some areas I have an advantage and in others we lose."
Local hero Jakub Smrz made it two Ducati’s on the front row and held up Yamaha duo Marco Melandri and Eugene Laverty. Coming into the weekend the Yamaha team were confident that the bike would work well having both riders so close the front on a Friday is a clear indication they will be on the pace all weekend.
Laverty said: "The last time I was this close to the front on a Friday was Monza which turned out to be a pretty good weekend. We were a way off in the morning but this afternoon I understood what I needed to do and stopped riding it like a WSS bike and used the power and lines I need to for WSB. We still need to make some improvements to the last part of the braking zone, but other than that I’m happy."

The provisional second row of the grid is headed by ten time Brno race winner Max Biaggi along with Tom Sykes, Leon Haslam and Michel Fabrizio.
Leon Camier ended the session in 11th with rookie Alex Lowes in 21st onboard the Castrol Honda after suffering a front end crash mid way through the session.

Biaggi led from pole until Melandri stole the lead in the eighth lap. The Italian riders were then embroiled in a battle for first, trading places until Melandri reclaimed the lead with three laps remaining and held off Biaggi to take the win despite a delaminated rear tyre.
Spaniard Carlos Checa (Althea Racing) moved past Eugene Laverty to take third on lap three and rode consistently to close the gap on the leading Italians, but was unable to challenge for second.
Michel Fabrizio (Team Suzuki Alstare) took fourth, finishing ahead of Melandri's Yamaha World Superbike team mate Eugene Laverty in fifth. Ayrton Badovini was the strongest performing BMW rider taking sixth place on his satellite BMW Motorrad Italia machine, finishing two positions ahead of Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) in eighth. Leon Camier (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team) ended the race in seventh.
Tom Sykes finished behind Kawasaki Racing team mate Joan Lascorz in tenth.
