WATCH: RaceRoom Graphic Update Comparison Old vs. New

With a big graphics overhaul being part of RaceRoom's September 2024 update, we dive into a comparison of old versus new. The visual difference is staggering in some cases.

A long-requested update is finally materializing for RaceRoom fans: The graphics of the sim are receiving quite a lot of polish, bringing RR closer to a 2024 level when it comes to visual standards. The list of changes is quite extensive and contains elements like an auto-exposure feature, improved lighting and reflections, a color system upgrade an much more - check out the full list in our article on the update's announcement.

The new visuals are an big step forward without question, but in some scenarios, they are better than in others. Join @Michel Wolk for a more in-depth look and how the new visuals stack up agains the old version in the video embedded at the top of this article!

RaceRoom Graphics Update In VR

Trying the RaceRoom graphics update in VR was generally decent, although performance was not the greatest. From what I could tell, this is rooted in RR running on DirectX 9, which also results in OpenComposite not working properly on my end. Supposedly, there is a so-called branch of the original OpenComposite .dll file initially created for rFactor 2, but it is sadly not available where the creator originally uploaded it to.

Still, with some settings fiddling, it should be possible to get decent performance out of RaceRoom in VR, even with the new graphics update - on higher-end GPUs, that is. And if you managed to get OpenComposite and OpenXR Toolkit running within RaceRoom, be sure to let the OverTake community know in the comments!

In general, the image did have good clarity, which is especially important when looking into the distance. Things like sponsor boards, signs and brake markers were readable at a decent distance. Inside the cockpit, things look very nice when using the "high" setting for textures, making for a generally immersive experience.

VR was also very helpful in the tight hairpin found at the AVUS, as you tend to not know where exactly you are when running a monitor - unless it is a 32:9 ultrawide. Being able to simply look at the apex helps with positioning the car in turns like this immensely.

I will be sure to keep trying to get RaceRoom to run nicely in VR - once I do, I will share my findings, of course. Maybe it will work more smoothly in the release version, as I tried it in a preview build of the new update.

What do you make of the new RaceRoom graphics? Let us know in the comments below or join the discussion in our forums!

Must have worked a miracle on the old engine....or it's a new one (just personal opinion, only guessing:p)

Well no surprise here, that's ISI ( shrugs ) :coffee:

It's not in the 6 sims I have left installed in steam for it's visuals, none are. ;)

I tried the update yesterday, and i liked it very much.
I appreciate the nice update.

It thought itwould be even better but my opinion is biased due to the fact i played assetto corsa with pure 2.0 the day before. In fact, it seems they have made something in the same direction (skyboxes, ...??)

I always have appreciated Raceroom, even with the old graphics, and i think that the sim is back for good !.
I may recondider my choice of not purchasing content anymore.
I like the fact that the antialiasing is good, the colors are natural, the game runs fluently.
The AI are behaving very unrealistic sometimes, but i rnjoy racing with them.
The replay system is very good.

Already posted it in the forum. You can clearly see a update everywhere but the real "wow" effect comes first with the new content (Much better than old content refreshed wish graphics update)
I suppose the coming DTM 2024 pack will keep these new standarts !

Same for me, not working with open composite, actually, not working at all in VR anymore after the "update".
Disappointing!

Oof, that's not good. Fingers crossed for a fix, and soon! Would be even better if it worked well with OpenComposite, because the look in SteamVR was already quite good - just the performance wasn't quite there unfortunately :(

Gave the update a shot.

The positive takes...
Performance is fixed, no longer dropping frames at race starts with a "heavier" grid, smooth locked 90 FPS with the same scenario I used to test with. Did not test an enormous grid, but CPU usage seems to be much better all around.

The neutral takes...
I understand the quality improvement with the graphics updates, but there used to be something... special about the R3E looks and art style that is a little bit lost with this update. Exposure tweaks and some color grading could mostly mitigate this. The image looks a bit dark overall.

The negative takes...
Dash displays are very hit or miss. I cannot look at the dash display of the 296 GT3. There are big quality inconsistencies with older and newer content, for example the not so old RS3 TCR has some really weird materials for the interior cockpit plastic, while the newer RS3 TCR Evo looks great on that front. Poly counts in the cockpit are still a little bit low even for the newly released DTM cars (tested the Opel). On the graphics front, a little bit of distant haze effect could hide the very colorful and often low resolution distant objects on tracks, but that is also inconsistent (Portimao looked awful for example).

Verdict...
It's a step forward. I am not sure if I keep it installed this time, since I have mostly older content that don't look to good, while newer content costs a bit more than I would justify paying for it, for what it is. If dash displays get an overhaul, I would probably go for it, it's a big immersion ruining factor for me. There are more exciting stuff on the way from the competition at the moment for my unfortunately limited PC time... To end on a positive note, one of the barriers for my reentry to R3E has been fixed (performance), now the dashes and I will be back for sure

Spent some quality time with R3E yesterday and this morning. All the subtle graphic improvements add up to an overall better looking and running game on my machine. I am taking a small FPS hit by enabling the auto-contrast thingy, which I think needs to be used because the game seems darker overall than it used to?

I'm no graphics whore, but this nice update will probably have me spending more time in the game for a while.

If only they could implement HDR (I don't think DX9 is capable?)

Great cars for sure. Il love them.
Great sounds as always.

I am using the NVIDA app with RTX HDR filter enabled on my RTX 4090 with a 4k OLED monitor.
Ohhhhhh, really? My HDR is "always on", but I see no evidence of it in-game.
Does the RTX-HDR filter "force" HDR or something along those lines? Gonna have to do a little research on that :)

Edit: Windows 11 required. Nope :p
Thanks for the info, tho!

For using the NVIDIA app RTX HDR filter, you have to enable Windows HDR, but disable Windows auto HDR for SDR gaming (non-HDR supported games). Then once in game, hit alt-Z and turn on the filter. Once enabled, restart the game for it to function. My OLED monitor will actually show the HDR logo when I start Raceroom now, meaning it is enabled and recognized by my monitor. The new graphics really pop in 4K HDR.

I only drive in VR and wasn't particularly impressed with it tbh. I would describe it better screen reflections and darker skies. Maybe the fact that everything is so much more blown up and magnified in VR plays a part but it wasn't a night and day change.

Is it me or the AI worse than it was at some point in the past? I swear the AI used to predatory but intelligent but now they think nothing of spinning you out mid-bend and seem way more John Cleland (one for the old school!) about things.

HDR logo will also pop when you turn on Windows HDR. Basically when image format sent to the monitor is in HDR. It doesn't yet mean that any meaningful HDR information is actually there.

Having said that I don't know what the Nvidia app is actually doing but I presume this must be something akin to win 11 auto HDR. Post processing (maybe AI run) that tries to mimick what a proper HDR rendered image would be (I.e. the game itself would output proper HDR information as truth told only the game has the required info. Post processing will only be just that, post processing).
