After its release date being announced recently, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is now playable on PC - a Steam demo has launched and is available until June 17.

Hands-on time for Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown! The upcoming title set for a September 12 release is now available in demo form via Steam, allowing players to gather their own experiences in virtual Hong Kong Island until June 17. The TDUSC demo is part of the Steam Next Fest.

And it is not exactly a small demo, either. The official Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown Twitter account shared what is available, and this includes nine of the map's 14 districts, 27 races, 25 quests, and 30 cars in total. 16 of them are buyable, the other 11 are available in Test Drive mode, in addition to three starter cars.

However, be aware that Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown comes with some quite hefty PC spec requirements, especially if you want to run the game on the ultra preset in 2160p.

It looks like a nice game, but the last time I was in Hong Kong I got really drunk over in the Wan Chai district and ended up with a tattoo that I didn't really want and a terrible hangover. So I'm a little leery of plunging into this title.

Tested it on my ryzen 5600 and rtx 3060. Could not get consistent FPS over 40 on any settings other than Low. And even on Low it only went to 60 and occasional spikes to 70 while looking like complete trash.

Big problem with over-sharpening on almost all settings unless you turn on DLSS or Temporal Antialiasing, and then things look a bit muddy.

Gameplay-wise, it seems to be a Forza Horizon clone based in futuristic Hong Kong with some 'walk around' social venues and player-clan rivalry.

I do commend them for the bravery of allowing the player to drive anywhere, even offroad through the forest in random places.

Driving has a weird boost behind the handbrake (to assist with le epic drifts, no doubt). Trying to join a race failed 3 of 4 times, and the one time it worked was against AI players.

since this is a small team with a smaller budget compared to The Crew or FH i am not expecting them to deliver on the level of these two, but currently there is not enough there to justify me buying the game. Now, there are still 3 months until release but other than some optimization work i don't think much will change. I will keep this game on my radar and check in on it a year or so after release. Thats usually when most games nowadays become better after rough launches.

I'll be able to test the demo at the end of this week. The optimisation is the main issue reported by most players and reviewers. It is concerning but it can, I hope, be fixed (althpugh this KT's engine has never been the best optimised engine ; with a full 1:1 scaled HK it may be struggling a lot). What is more concerning is the mandatory online gaming.

About the general production quality, let's not forget it is not a AAA title but a AA one trying to get its share of an interesting market with not a lot of products : the most recent one being Motorfest and the previous one FH5. TDU is just a new alternative with something we have seen for the last time many years ago (ine the first TDU games) a 1:1 scaled city. The true star of the game should be HK and no one really speaks about it. Is it nicely reproduced? In terms of architecture and lightning? No pedestrians seems a big critic there but which recent succesful games include pedestrians? Last time it has been done was in The Crew 2....

I'll test the driving myself as I generally don't trust users physics feedbacks for KT's games. I assume, like all its titles, that using a 360 degrees rotation angle in the wheel profile, and in the game's control settings, is mandatory to get the right feeling ingame (which I have to do in any KT's racing title).

Well, I've tested the demo. I played with the keyboard and with a Thrustmaster wheel. It seems to ne more optimized with the keyboard. There is something there.
As with any KT's racing game, go for the 360 wheel degree rotation.

What's good :
- the handling : Much better than other games of this type : more realistic, although the pendulum effect is lacking.
- HK looks beautiful and there are many streets and locations. This blows away The Crew 3's Hawai (better lighning although not as optimised).

What's bad :
- Optimization, as reported by manies.
- Loading times, short but boaring, compared to other titles.

There are vibes from NFS Underrground 2. That's good, although it is the kind of game I'll get on sale under 10 euros. For that price, it will be a non brainer.

EDIT : I forgot the elephant in the room, the mandatory online connection!

Firstly, all races wait for other players. What will happen for the new players in a few.months? Will they have to compete with players woth tons of hours in the game with upgraded cars? So no chance to win...

Secondly, how long will Nacon support the servers? It is not as big as Ubisoft, which shut down The Crew, and servers for V Rally 4 had been shut down quickly (and never the game was patched so it still crashes if you click on the online menu).
