After a somewhat prolonged hiatus from our screens, KW Studios has dropped the first teaser for a new update for RaceRoom that is being tipped as one of the most important for the sim in years.

UPDATED AUGUST 19, 2024, 08:45 UTC

The last content drop we saw for RaceRoom was in May when the BMW M8, GT4 and M2 CS were introduced to the extensive and varied RaceRoom store. Since that addition, there has been little to no news within the sim, aside from their annual content summer sale.

RaceRoom To Welcome The Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI

It is a safe bet to say that the new car teased in their post is the Alfa 155 V6 TI, a staple of the latter years of the original DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft). This incredible fire-breathing, Italian illustration of engineering masterclass will undoubtedly make the users of RaceRoom fall in love with the Alfa Romeo brand all over again.

With a total of 38 wins in its competitive years, the 155 V6 TI is one of the most successful cars of its era in terms of registered success. It was not just the DTM-spec 155 that was turning heads, the touring car version competing over in Britain, was causing chaos amongst series giants Vauxhall and Ford.

Expected is the 1995-spec car, as this would complement the already present AMG-Mercedes C-Klasse from the same year. But there is still a rather large Opel-shaped hole missing in that 1995 lineup.

RaceRoom To Debut Historic Track

While the full 1995 DTM grid would be excellent to have in RaceRoom, we have argued before that period-correct tracks for the abundance of historic content in the sim would be a welcome addition - racing classic cars on modern circuits just does not hit the same.

It would appear that KW Studios may have read that article - and took the inspiration: Just a day after the Alfa Romeo teaser, another blurred image dropped, this time featuring a rather distinct tower-like building with a Mercedes star on top. Racing fans will immediately know where that building is located - namely in Berlin. We are talking about the AVUS, of course.

Best known for its fearsome 19.279-kilometer (11.980-mile) layout complete with the enormous banked Nordkehre, also known as "Wall of Death", the track was shortened multiple times over the years. Today, it simply is part of the Autobahn 115 in the southwest of Berlin. The main grandstand remains and has been renovated in recent years, and the former race control tower is still in place as well - it is the building in the teaser image.

It would be reasonable to expect the track to be in its 1992-1995 configuration, as it would be accurate to both the 1992 and 1995 season cars in RaceRoom. By that time, the AVUS had been shortened to 2.639 kilometers, featuring a hairpin turn as the Südkehre, followed by a series of rather quick chicanes marked by kerbs on the back straight before heading into the flat Nordkehre.

In 1996, another chicane was installed on the entry to the Nordkehre following the fatal accident of Kieth O'dor in a Super Tourenwagen Cup race. In this configuration, the track continued to host races until the 1998 season, after which it was closed as a racing circuit.

Update Speculation

It is hard to believe that the aformenetioned hole in the 1995 DTM RaceRoom lineup will not be filled sooner rather than later. Once this is fulfilled, RaceRoom would have the entirety of the 1992 and 1995 seasons. The sim also has entries from 2003, 2005, 2013, 2014 and the more modern 2021 and newer fields.

What else could this massive new update potentially contain, you may ask yourself? A day and night cycle appears to be at the top of some people's lists along with updated Multiplayer menus and UI in general.

What do you want to see in the new RaceRoom update? Will you give the sim another try once it deploys? Let us know on X @OverTake_gg or down in the comments below!

I'm absolutely OK with the graphics, they work very well with VR for me, too (in most cases).
But new graphics could get more people into the sim, so we might finally get more ranked racing!

Besides the lack of weather variety, I'm really struggling with RaceRoom's AI, which keeps pulling away in every fast corner by at least four tenths while braking so early that you can divebomb up to two or even three cars.

Does anyone of you know: Has any sim ever changed it's AI after being published? Seems unlikely to me.

Oh, nice, remember the red Alfa in 'Race 07' and this will be a welcome addition to the already awesome Raceroom.:inlove:

'Time of Day' / 'Sun Direction' and 'Gamma' controls in 'Photo Mode' is what's needed;)

I agree, fix the AI. It's impossible to race against the AI. So fast in one corner, then so slow in another. I'm a backmarker in my online club, but still drive better.

"Milestone" update huh?

Last years best in sim racing tyre update was surely something that not other developer came close to in 2023...

So this could be quite large of an update... DX12 size even...

Realistically that's all this needs for more to jump on in...

Hopefully a new graphics engine.
Can I ask what the issue is with it?

I race at 4k 120fps and most stuff turned up to the max and it's every bit as good as other contemporary games. Granted I'm at the top end of spec, but then it's never been particularly resource-hungry.

I seriously do not want a flame war, I'm interested in what is so bad about it - as graphic fidelity is regularly slammed in forums.

Just open your eyes buddy, it's dated as hell. The rear mirror look like it's tinted, the textures are poor, the reflexions terribles (try the porshe cup 2021, the one with the tracks patern on the paint, the ''chrome'' is grotesque), the vfx (back fires) are from another time, no rain, no night, no nothing. It's still an incredible sim title, but outdated graphicaly as Automobilista 1 can be.

Fair enough, subjective standards then, which again isn't a reflection (no pun) on your commentary, I just don't fret over most of what you've listed there tbh. I am in the minority though I get that - it's a popular point of feedback. Thanks.

Graphics is a must. Whoever said it matches the other sims graphically needs to go to specsavers . It’s a dog in vr and flat out doesn’t work for me in most cases because the resolution on my headset is too high. Even on flatscreen it looks worse than iRacing and that’s saying something . For reference I’m running a 4090 and a fairly top end cpu . I love lots of things about it but the dated graphics engine makes it a no go for me.
If it had any updated graphics engine that I could scale up properly and would let me max it out in vr I will absolutely give it another go.

On the latest tracks or updated ones i have to say that iRacing actually looks very good if you max everything out. In parts it has some of the best track surface textures of any sim currently. Go take a look at Misanos curbs and tracksurface for example. It beats every other current sim.
iRacings problem is that older tracks look by now like dogshit and its a herculean task to bring them all to a certain standard. And by the time thats done the latest tracks again will look better.

AMS2 updates its AI with every release. So yes, very possible to do.

if you have issues from the ai ; it really helps if you give us a heads up in here
that way it can be checked

I just went into the game and took a closer look at the renamed DTM 1995 class. The AMG has new preview pictures, they are different from what is in the store. And the most significant difference to me is that the headlights are turned off now. No other car in the game with existent headlights has them turned off (I checked). Does this mean we are getting day and night or does this mean we are getting headlights that can be turned on and off?
