Most Played Racing Games On Steam In June 2024

A big release and a big announcement made for some change in the monthly list of Most Played Racing Games on Steam in June 2024. While the top of the list remains unchanged, there are a few surprises to be found.

Note: While iRacing is available on Steam as well, its numbers are not representative as most players acces the sim through its own UI. As a result, its statistics are not included in this article.

This year marked one of the earliest releases for a Formula One game during a season it portrays. Hitting the (mostly virtual) shelves in late May, the sample size for F1 24 was too small to be included in last month's list of the most played racing games on Steam. However, now that it is there, it is one of the surprises - and not in a good way.

While F1 23 had launched to 5,484.5 average players and a peak of 13,261 in June of 2023 (halfway through the month, mind you), F1 24 failed to reach even half of those numbers in June of 2024. The latest Formula One title is still in the top 10, but hardly tops MX Bikes, and its own predecessor is not too far off either.

The handling model controversy that emerged during the preview phase already certainly has not helped with this - and many players have voiced their opinion that not too much has changed compared to F1 23. Keeping an eye on the July numbers of the title will be very interesting.

Meanwhile, Forza Horizon 4 more than doubled its player numbers to close in on the top three, being hot on the heels of Assetto Corsa. While AC managed to set a new concurrent player record in June, FH4 was announced to be delisted in December of 2024.

It looks like the announcement prompted plenty of players to check out the game before it is too late - a big discount before the 2024 Steam Summer Sale likely also saw more players fire up the game. In fact, the game set a new all-time peak player record.

Elsewhere, Le Mans Ultimate's surge after the real 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans translated to an almost-doubled average player count. The sim still has a long way to go to close in to the bigger titles, however. RaceRoom, meanwhile, benefitted from its free access period and summer sale, slotting in right behind LMU by a tiny margin.

Going off the road, EA Sports WRC is still far behind DiRT Rally 2.0, recording just over half the average concurrent players of the older title.

I presume most of those 13.248 iRacers did not logon via Steam's thin iR client, but using iRacing's own non-Steam interfaces.
No real advantage to using Steam for iRacing - unless there is regional pricing that works out in your favor. Not sure if that exists anymore though.

I've seen sales of 50% pricetag for a single month of iRacing subscription.
My point, however, was in relation to the article content and explanation of why iRacing is not in the list.

Suggestion for an article.A proper analysis of racing game player numbers. There is so much missing from these Steam numbers. For example Forza numbers are pathetic but of course its an Xbox title.

Added the usual note regarding iRacing for clarification :)

However, for reference, it would not have made the cut anyway at 174.2 players on average in June.

about numbers, iRacing still far better, about online, physics, pro feeling.....ask verstappen why.
About the driving feeling, Assetto feels very old, like a basic on/off effect in a turn, can't play at this low level simulation. Raceroom, ACC, LMU/rF2 and iRacing, all feel far better. And even on a 4K at ultra, AC doesn't feels very beautiful with CSP/sol/pure for me, cause the textures are still the old ones. I have better hope for AC Evo.
seriously? AC has much more enjoyable and realistic physics, iRacing is bland and gamy, it's basically a higly competitive arcade game. It's a tryhard sim where you need to hit every apex with a boat instead of real racing where track and car feel alive

Max is playing it with a controller

havent been driving rally since the DR2.0 days but interesting to see that WRC7 has more concurrent players than EA WRC.

Crew Motorfest hasn´t managed to get into that list for two month now. How interesting.
They don´t reach the 200.
Most people are probably playing that via Ubisoft Connect since the Steam launch was way later.

WRC7 was heavily discounted, that's probably why their number is so high.

it sounds as true as your last sentence ;), wonder why any real pro driver is at iRacing ;)

The fix is in on these stats. Everyone knows the most played sim is Car Mechanic 2021.

Bolt simulator.

I spent an age on that game building an engine. Realising that the only reason you're doing bolt xyz is that someone coded it thus (it's not every bolt, so can't say it's a "sim", or something).

Anyway, I built a sweet v8 thing, it was in fairness, awesome.

Until I went to put it in my car, and it was one series out or something - whatever, it didn't fit.

Real tears.

I carried on, and fixed up another car, and then what... I took it to the test track and realised this is not a racing game, the best was behind me.

And that ends my time with Toil Simulator.

In September, it will be 18 years since the release of GTR2. If some of us had launched this game for a few hours in the background in September, we would have expected it to be on this list. Or even an interesting peak of online players in SteamDB. ;)
