Most Played Racing Games On Steam In August 2024

Summer is still very much present in much of the world. Despite this, several racing titles have seen an influx of players - here are the most played racing games on Steam in August 2024.

Note: While iRacing is available on Steam as well, its numbers are not representative as most players acces the sim through its own UI. As a result, its statistics are not included in this article.

The Steam Summer Sale coupled with the announcement of the game being pulled from online stores in December meant Forza Horizon 4 surged past the competition to claim the top spot in July - a month later, the game is further down the order again, posting numbers that are more comparable to June.

This means that BeamNG.drive is back on top, this time with a sizeable lead compared to second-placed Forza Horizon 5. Sim racers will be delighted to see that despite posting slightly lower numbers than in June, Assetto Corsa keeps chugging along closely behind FH5.

The evergreen sim had reached an all-time high for peak players in June following the first screenshot of Assetto Corsa Evo surfacing, which then was followed by the long-awaited successor's Steam page going live.

Meanwhile, Need For Speed Unbound saw the biggest increase in average players at almost 90%, most likely due to the Volume 8 update that added a throwback to the series' roots with police chases à la Hot Pursuit returning.

So to be clear then AC is that high because of modding
No, AC is that high because it offers more to more people than the more focused title like RF2, AMS2, etc.....
Offering more does not mean that AC, among many other aspect does not also offer a great SIM experience, but the numbers are not saying it is a “superior” SIM to the other SIM alternative, neither that it is “inferior”.
AC high daily numbers is a testament to its diversity and reflect how so many people with different aspirations find something to enjoy in one complete package combining great driving, great physic, great graphics and almost limitless diversity of content.
All because of a solid Kunos foundation on which the community decided to invest time and efforts to build the Taj Mahal of Simulation.

Modding in AC and the sort of modding has put it in the same category as BeamNG. We can't compare AC to the other sims IMO unless we remove all the mods.
That would be pointless though, so as it is its an everyman title due to modding, its not a criticism, far from it, but vanilla AC would be lucky to be on that list.
The reason i point this out is that BeamNG and ForzaHorizon are top because of Beams sandbox mess about approach, and Forza H for arcade fun messing about. AC with mods has both of those in it. That is why it is where it is, most people playing AC in those figures couldn't care less about 'sim' and nor should they.
Do the people driving CROCS with wheels on Mario kart track rips really care for sim like physics?

I think that they should change the title of this monthly article to " The Butt Hurt Gamer"!

I agree FH/AC/BNG should be in another category for free roaming games, but honestly this just shows that a lot of people are passionate about cars but not about driving them on a track, which to me doesn't come as a surprise.

You can count NFS into this category too. Many drivers nowadays haven´t much interest in racing the same 14 corners over and over again just to gain a millisecond.

, I guess they have a problem then, because to me LMU looks like it is only good for online sprint races so far.

What I want from LMU is to be able to do long endurance races with AI co-drivers, save games, and enjoy the strategy and endurance aspects of ... endurance racing.

So far it seems to me they would have done better to finish the BTCC game, since they already had good cars, half the tracks, and BTCC lends itself perfectly to argy-bargy races of 20 minutes length. Perhaps the RWD vs FWD balance issues were insurmountable.
Read this a lot, honestly would be the reason LMU is not as popular, through away their biggest asset RF2 for this, just proves MSG has no idea what to do in the sim industry. Owner should go back to motorsport network did better their than Motorsport games.

Features should be coming.
Of course that is going to depend entirely on the support they get right ?
Heavens help any sim gets such constant pressure after barely 6 months EA ... my word !
We all want what you want from LMU ;) no matter what studio / platform it was on.
Trouble is that means 100% of the people that want the same have to support it whatever the outcome.

LMU is good for long offline races, I have let it run 24/7 many times.
LMU will load a 24 hour replay ( I have ) , something rF2 is simply not capable of.

Online is a non issue every sim 95% depends on the drivers.
You can work around anything in a server, always a answer.
If not you just move on to the next combo.

For mine has never made iota of sense to worry about proper full seasons.
No Championship No career in ISIMotor so what is the point ?
Make BTCC instead of LMU you face the exact same issues ;)

I have brought all sims and DLC even though 90% are uninstalled and I don't bag them.
It would be nice if everyone could do the same for my favourite sims.
Then maybe you would see some real progress with features.

You only get back what you put in.
That does not include hot air.

Give them all your monies, she'll be right.

Otherwise it'll be your fault if they screw this up.

Whatever they happen to do with this is all you need (and if you were smarter, all you would want).

Ignore the previous abandoned bits ... they do.

Any other opinion is just whinging.

The only thing I don't really like about this report that it's not really representative. EA, Ubisoft, Xbox games (almost half of this list) have their own launcher and if someone purchases a key on a 3rd party site it's usually activated for their "main" platform (EA App, Ubi Connect, MS Store/Xbox App). I don't know if it's possible to acquire data from those platforms, but this list as it is now does not give a completely real picture.

Also, what does it matter how many people are playing during any given month?

A better metric for game health would be how many sales were made. For publishers, # playing = server costs, # of sales = profit. I bought rF2 years & years ago - still play it all the time. I never bought AMS2 directly, and I play it even more. My play time has virtually no bearing on the health of the company/game.
