Hood On Le Mans Virtual Return: "Certainly Want Proper Driver Swaps"

Le Mans Virtual is set to return within Le Mans Ultimate, and when it does, driver swaps should be a part of it, according to Motorsport Games CEO Stephen Hood.

Originating during the COVID-19 pandemic, Le Mans Virtual proved to be a popular series. Esports drivers and professional racers from around the world competed in the series as well as the 24-hour event in rFactor 2, which was last run in early 2023 - although not without problems that famously led to a rant by Formula One World Champion Max Verstappen.

Usually run in the winter months of the Northern Hemisphere, the 2023-2024 series did not happen. Le Mans Virtual is set to return in Le Mans Ultimate, however, and it will not be an closed-off event as it has been previously.

"We chased the 1%, the professional esports drivers and real drivers - and that is great for the buzz. But I would like to make that more attainable for more people so they could be part of this", Stephen Hood, CEO of Motorsport Games, told OverTake. "It does not need to be exclusive. We got a slightly different format in mind that makes it more community-focused."

Le Mans Virtual With "Proper Driver Swaps"

To achieve this, a smaller improvement deployed in the latest patch is essential, namely netcode. "One of the reasons we added this is to support Le Mans Virtual", stated Hood. The problems that led to the issues with the final 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual to date was within rFactor 2's multiplayer code, Hood continued: "Some of it is so legacy that is very difficult to debug and fix. The key thing for us was to try and rebuild it so we can debug it and fix things."

These improvements are essential to add a feature that is an integral part of endurance racing and that players have been asking for since LMU was released into Early Access: online driver swaps. "The netcode becomes the framework for things like proper driver swaps that we know need to come to the game - not just for Le Mans Virtual, but endurance racing in general", said Hood.

"For Le Mans Virtual itself, certainly we want the proper driver swaps", continued the MSG CEO. "We got thins on our internal road map, and driver swaps are an important part of that. Those are necessary pieces for us to say 'now we are ready to do Le Mans Virtual'".

Running proper endurance races in LMU should be possible once Le Mans Virtual returns at the latest.

Le Mans Virtual Comeback In Late 2024 Or Early 2025

In turn, this means that driver swaps should arrive before Le Mans Virtual takes place - but it will not be in the near future. Instead, the plan is for the competition to be back on the grid "towards the end of this year or the start of next year", according to Hood.

Until then, the plan is for LMU to make more progress, of course, with the co-op mode that was supposed to be included in the June update but did not make it being one of the main additions. "Right now, LMU can be used as a sprint racing game, but it has that endurance framework. People cannot tap into the beauty of endurance racing", stated Hood. "That is why we aim to bring things like co-op to the table, to enable people to enjoy the strategy and tactics around endurance and not have to commit several hours in one sitting."

To summarize: Le Mans Virtual is set to make its comeback either in late 2024 or early 2025, and MSG is not planning on reviving the event without driver swaps - which would make proper endurance races possible online. It will also be open to "99% of the player base", as Hood stated in early April.

Cool, can these guys just like go bankrupt already? Game has been a disaster and even after a moderately successful release they're still at it with their frankly bad decision making, can we go back to when Le Mans wasn't exclusive to a bunch of fraudsters?
I've been having a lot of fun with this disaster. Guess "disaster" has different meanings for us. Do you want it back in iRacing behind a rental paywall instead?

I hope, for their sake and for ours, that the change of driver will be made of reinforced concrete, otherwise it's all over for LMU...
I don't mind waiting if the feature is top notch, I'm waiting to be able to be present on the server to do the spotter for my team-mate, to have all the race info for the strategy, to be able to intervene on the setup and the race strategy (tyre, fuel or repair).
That's what I'm waiting for and many others too.

" certainly want " :O_o:

They better reinstate AI control back then because unless this answer is " absolutely will " they are toast.

Gjon would never have tried to solve all this, 2.5 was a placeholder, better things to come.

Alas, we threw the baby out with the bath water :coffee:

I'm one of the loud critics of LMU, but not because it's a disaster. But because I think it has potential and I want it to succeed. And being one of the loud critics (in contrast to uncritical fanboys) I guess I have a right to say that it's not a disaster. Far from it. And you saying that is either you are uninformed or you're just aiming at publicity. Which I guess you received with mine and few others replies to your meaningless post.

Well look at that... A developer actually acknowledging that their game is a "sprint game" in it's current form...

It's really refreshing given what else has been happening around Endurance sim racing this year...

Don't forget folks, Simulation features like Radar and Driver Labels come before arcade features like VR and Driver Swaps....

Marc I remember you as being a sensible guy in the past but why is it so hard to accept that VR support isn't ready yet and that other community requested features get implemented before VR if they are ready first? They could have gone the easy route and simply and copy-pasted everything from rF2 but that doesn't seem to be their approach wich is a good thing in my book. Everyone wants to have all at once but that's sadly not how it works. Granted I don't need the radar and generaly think that it is bad for improving your racecraft but I simply accept that most people have voted for it. So that's that. Driver labels are important for the protesting system together with the replays so I have no idea why people see this development as something negative.

Because of the past, it took S397 an ice age to get the UI sorted, far far too long to fix the AI issues, MSG come with a very bad reputation themselves, the same "small team" excuses, yada yada yada heard it all before and we're here yet again waiting on features that already work but apparently are broken....again.

But here we have coders wasting time on arcade features voted for by a couple hundred users who are too lazy to learn proper Sim race craft and care more about magical names floating above cars, when those coder hands could've been helping towards the core of the Sim, that's my opinion and having been around this scene for decades I know what I see and I'm tired of the same old excuses.

For the record I do want to buy this Sim, I'm keeping tabs on it, but nothing about it's progress so far is filling me with any excitement and each and every "news" story doesn't add anything other than hot air.

All of this and more has been available in another sim for almost 10 years now. Not sure what the hold up is at S397...

LMU promising endurance Special Events for everyone to access, better late than never.
Will be interesting to see how many actually participate whenever this event happens. There was a 24H of LeMans on iR last weekend hosted by a league that drew 688 teams and over 2600 drivers. And that was just a league event - not even one of iR's special events.

Look, people want the official game with the official license event. Plus, you are so proud of those numbers, more people are playing ACC right now.

And until iRacing fix their tires, they are not even worth mentioning in the same ballpark.
