Community Question: What is the Best Sounding Car in Sim Racing?

Sound often equals spectacle in racing, and great-sounding cars are usually popular in sim racing as well. We want to know: What are your favorites?

Every motorsport fan likes to think back fondly on the wailing V10 monsters that exclusively raced in Formula One between 1998 and 2005. Nowadays, the turbo hybrid V6s are admittedly not as soulful on the eardrums, but times of course have to change.

That is not to say there are no good loud engines being raced in motorsport. The Cadillac V-Series.R LMDh prototype has an amazing sounding 5.5-litre V8, and as of next year you can hear the incredible 6.5-litre V12 of the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH in sportscar racing.

But if you wanted to listen to certain cars that are not racing anymore, sim racing is your solace - outside of historic racing events at actual tracks, that is. While we are still a fair bit out from seeing the Valkyrie officially in some of our favourite sims like Automobilista 2, iRacing or Le Mans Ultimate, there are plenty of pre-existing choices to pick, which is why we put it to you: What are the cars in any racing sim with the best sounding engines? And which ones are your favorites in real life?

Editor's Take

I know I am going to get some flack for this, but I for one do not need a car to sound amazing for me to like it. I even enjoy driving some electric cars. But that is not to say I prefer an electric car's sound over an ICE car's, and there is a wide range to choose from.

When it come to engine sounds, it is not the rule that more cylinders equal better noise. The Bugatti Veyron and Chiron with sixteen cylinders do not sound better than a V8, V10 or V12, for instance. Neither is it a must to be naturally-aspirated or not have any hybrid system as part of the power unit.

I have many favourites when it comes to car sounds. I have waxed lyrical many times with the Cadillac mentioned earlier, I am not impartial to a V10 Formula One-style car, and even some motorcycle engine-powered vehicles like the Radical SR8. But if I was pressed to pick a favourite? Easily the Mazda 787B, which is in a range of titles like Gran Turismo 7 and Assetto Corsa.

With no degree in engineering, I cannot possibly explain how it works, so maybe someone can explain how this unique engine with a fixed cylinder block and rotating crankshaft can make such a nice sound. But even idle, it sounds like the equivalent of the beating heart of a bear readying to pounce.

It makes me wish that Mazda would make an LMDh with a rotary engine. Then we would have the full range of incredible engines at Le Mans and in all high level sportscar racing in what is already a golden age - bar a V10, that is. Maybe a McLaren Solus LMH would satisfy that need...

My favorite, at least the first one which came into my mind, the Ford Capri Turbo from the DRM revival mod for rFactor, not the Assetto Corsa version. For rFactor, this is my alltime favorite car, not only how it sounds but also how it drives. I like the sound for a combination of things. The engine sound is really great, I get blown away by it every time I hear it. But it certainly is the combination with all other sounds, the gear switching, the breaking , the tires screaming, the wind and everything else you can hear. I wish every car in every sim would have such a detailed sound, but unfortunately this is not the case.
De DRM revival mod for Assetto Corsa is not a conversion, but a completely new mod, made by the same modding team, at least that's what they say themselves. I have the impression that the details of the cars in Assetto Corsa look a bit different. The graphical qualities, driving characteristics and ffb are also different, but that's the usual difference between AC and rF. The sound is a whole different story. It sounds completely different in AC. It's clear that a lot of attention has been paid to it and it also sounds with a lot of details. But I have a very strong preference for the sound in rF. In AC it sounds very clean, not that great rough sound like in rF. Also the balance between all the background noises, especially the gear shifting I find much better in rF.

1990s era Indycar, 911 RSR or LaFerrari FXXK Evo
the issue is that each of these great cars has different sound characteristics and thats why its hard to compare.
i can't compare a flat 6 with a V8 or a V8 with a V12 and then say "this sounds the best", its like loving all your children and having to decide. no way.

Yet another question impossible to me as a life long simmer to answer, covering in short terms. Would be a bigger novel, if only I could remember it all over the years.

In short, I would say that the R3E as a standard sim delivers the most authentic and most vivid engine sound. Racing the DTM 1992 pack at Bilsterberg is my R3E go-to, highly due to the sound I must say, delivering bulls eye immersion here.

But first and foremost on my frontal lobe is my favorite in AC:
The art piece of Bizzarrini GT 5300 Corsa from the ACL GTC mod pack. Lovely brutal downshifts, and the stable Chevy 327cu V8 sound, travelling up and down in the 4 gears around the Targa Florio I never get tired of :inlove:

Earlier this summer I set up a fictitious Le Mans AC event with legendary cars and drivers through historical times up to the present day, carefully selecting vehicles delivering great sound in my old stable HiFi system with 4 x 300W speakers set in BiWire and binocular sound, creating an "imaginary authenticity" with a total image, and then in VR with my headphones with 3D sound for the total experience. I myself participated in the infamous #4 1972 Olympic Charger big block (used in various real life classic meetings) as a stand alone-add (better than the SCN pack version to my taste). This off-line event was a lovely mecca of sound in my ears!

And if you're into classic V8s, it's also great to drive the AVRP series (Australian Vintage V8's from late 60ies to early 70ies) at historic Bathurst.

Or the pre-war historical 1935 ERA Type B from Legion. It is a pleasure to race and listen to it at 1923 Tours, which has recently had a major brush up.

In addition, as many others probably have on the retina, I would like to mention the AC Porsche 911 (991.2) RSR 2017 sound mod.

I think the first AC mod I enjoyed the engine sound from was before the Kunos update with the 787B;
The 1991 F1 Ferrari 643 from ASR. Just as penetratingly vehement as I remember it as a present spectator at the time.

Speaking the standard Kunos Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder to me it delivers a lovely authentic sound, the closest I can get to the sound from the real world was my parent's neighbour's Porsche 356 when he started the engine in his garage on a summer day, many years ago (he later sold it to some Germans for 5 times the purchase price back in the early 90s, I daresay don't even think about the price today). Racing this beauty round the PrinzenPlatz track mod is a perfect match sound-wise.

It's purely coincidental that I mention AC - just my immediate stray thoughts here during a lunch break.

I will also say that I enjoy rF2's Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R out-of-the-box engine sound.

Or the rF1 Pagani Zonda mod - magnificent sound work and also the mod pack as a whole.

Or the Panoz Esperante GTR-1 from a round millennium sim (that I have unfortunately forgotten the title of at the time of writing).

Also funny/refreshing to read Grand Prix 2 mentioned here. I think it must be a generational thing (perhaps?), delivering goosebumps when you drive out of the pit many decades later after having done the processing to be able to drive it in your present day simrig :)

However, I lack a really convincing sim engine sound from the engineering masterpiece Auto Union Type C. Despite there have been really many attempts of mods, all the way back from F1C99-02 over rF1, GTR2 and AC, nothing has completely satisfied me in terms of the totally blaring sound that every bone in the body crumbles when you have stood next to the monster in reality, the engine is switched on and the revs are revved up. The closest I've been able to get is to crank up my old powerful HiFi system when neither family nor neighbors were at home. But still, many nuances are missing in the sound in the various versions. So I'm eagerly waiting for such a sound mod - I would almost give an ear for it :)

But really, there are quite a few good sounds out there. Overwhelmingly many, actually.

It's difficult to find really good sounding sim cars.

Most cars, regardless how good the audio samples may be (which games unfortunately still use), still sound too repetitive, flat, thin, and just..."digital", "synthetic".

Important point, of which I fully agree.

However, it is possible to evoke some depth and nuances with the right audio hardware.

For instance my Sennheiser RS 175 headphones with the option of choosing between ordinary 3.5" jack and optical input as well as a number of physical settings on the headset for bass boost and surround sound, not to mention software finetuning, I'm able to get slightly more satisfactory engine sounds as output.

My specific headset actually does a better job here than my old powerful analogue HiFi system, if we are only talking about bringing out the nuances.

But of course it requires that there is a sim job for the hardware to work further on in refining the depth...

Like the predecessors already said it´s hard to pick one. So i will throw a not mentioned now into the ring:

Bizzarini GT (AC) from Bazza´s 60s GTC Mod
Oh, overlooked your answer.
Glad I'm not alone. A truly hidden treasure of which has been my #1 classic sports car choice as soon it hit the streets of AC.

Since my litter thoughts, I've really tried to wring my brain an if the task is to limit to a single pick, I'm really left with no doubt :)
