Community Question: What is the Best Sounding Car in Sim Racing?

Sound often equals spectacle in racing, and great-sounding cars are usually popular in sim racing as well. We want to know: What are your favorites?

Every motorsport fan likes to think back fondly on the wailing V10 monsters that exclusively raced in Formula One between 1998 and 2005. Nowadays, the turbo hybrid V6s are admittedly not as soulful on the eardrums, but times of course have to change.

That is not to say there are no good loud engines being raced in motorsport. The Cadillac V-Series.R LMDh prototype has an amazing sounding 5.5-litre V8, and as of next year you can hear the incredible 6.5-litre V12 of the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR-LMH in sportscar racing.

But if you wanted to listen to certain cars that are not racing anymore, sim racing is your solace - outside of historic racing events at actual tracks, that is. While we are still a fair bit out from seeing the Valkyrie officially in some of our favourite sims like Automobilista 2, iRacing or Le Mans Ultimate, there are plenty of pre-existing choices to pick, which is why we put it to you: What are the cars in any racing sim with the best sounding engines? And which ones are your favorites in real life?

Editor's Take

I know I am going to get some flack for this, but I for one do not need a car to sound amazing for me to like it. I even enjoy driving some electric cars. But that is not to say I prefer an electric car's sound over an ICE car's, and there is a wide range to choose from.

When it come to engine sounds, it is not the rule that more cylinders equal better noise. The Bugatti Veyron and Chiron with sixteen cylinders do not sound better than a V8, V10 or V12, for instance. Neither is it a must to be naturally-aspirated or not have any hybrid system as part of the power unit.

I have many favourites when it comes to car sounds. I have waxed lyrical many times with the Cadillac mentioned earlier, I am not impartial to a V10 Formula One-style car, and even some motorcycle engine-powered vehicles like the Radical SR8. But if I was pressed to pick a favourite? Easily the Mazda 787B, which is in a range of titles like Gran Turismo 7 and Assetto Corsa.

With no degree in engineering, I cannot possibly explain how it works, so maybe someone can explain how this unique engine with a fixed cylinder block and rotating crankshaft can make such a nice sound. But even idle, it sounds like the equivalent of the beating heart of a bear readying to pounce.

It makes me wish that Mazda would make an LMDh with a rotary engine. Then we would have the full range of incredible engines at Le Mans and in all high level sportscar racing in what is already a golden age - bar a V10, that is. Maybe a McLaren Solus LMH would satisfy that need...

It's a tough one to make a pick for.
The Caddy is one of the best modern cars in real life when it comes to sound, especially in person - that rumble is just sublime. It will get strong competition by the Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercar for WEC and IMSA next year, though :D That being said, the Caddy in LMU in particular sounds great, I have driven it just for the noise before.

Another strong candidate would be any CART car from about 1997 to 2000 when these things were running free. I mean:
Seeing Hearing Experiencing one of these in person just once is near the top of my bucket list.

Aside from that, any late-90s to 2005 V10 F1 car is up there, of course, but in sim racing, I think a V12 beats those for sound. The way Reiza have managed to capture the Honda V12 of the McLaren MP4/6 and MP4/7 is excellent.

Looking forward to more choices in this thread, pretty sure there is something new to be found here :)

My choice....AC Porsche RSR 2017 with Mr. Mike's sound update.
Any Porsche Carrera GT. That V10 is just insane.
Real life choice for hair standing on the back of your neck...MadMike's Mazda rotary-powered McLaren P1..

This is a hard one .There were so many good sounding cars over the last 20 years, starting with GTR 1 demo I was blown away when I first heard it ,so yea.......

F2004... no explanation needed, I can hear the TC cutting when I think about it.
SF70H... I like the V6 Hybrid sound, and the Ferraris of that era sound so nice and distinct to my ears.
911 RSR... makes me always increase the volume.
911 GT3 6th gear whine always makes me smile in ACC.
GTR GT3... so distinct, but I am biased because I drove that one a LOT in AC, especially with the sound mod.
Caddy LMDh... when the ICE fires up in the pit lane.

Kunos' McLaren F1 GTR, with ACFAN's sound mod. When it revs up (in cockpit view), so immersive and thrilling:

Also his classic 911 RSR mod, incredible as well:

For me it's all a bit nostalgic. Going for the whole GPL and GTR soundsets. The cabins felt alive in GTR with those little ambient squeaks and rattles

I heard a 1999 CART car at the 2018 Giant's Despair hillclimb shortly after VRC went and released their version and while I was making skin for the Penske paint scheme. The sound was absolutely unreal, since I was able to be right next to the car in the pits as they were starting it, and just a few meters away as it started off the line. No sound comes close to that intensity for racecars that I've heard. The videos and recordings really don't do it justice. The sound just fills the air so much that the air gets thicker and it just tears at the ears. I hope that you get the chance to see one of these incredible cars one day.

That's the sort of impression I get from some videos, but I'm sure it doesn't even start to describe it. It was similar for me when I heard Gerhard Berger's 1995 Ferrari 412T2 V12 last year - you know the sound is awesome, but nothing prepares you for what it's actually like in person (that's why I used the strikethrough on "hearing" and "seeing" in my initial post).

Glad you got to witness one of these in action! To me, there are hardly any race cars that are more intense overall. The sounds are insane, their looks are sleek, but aggressive, and let's not start with the ludicrous speeds they pulled on the superspeedways. That breed of cars is the most badass overall to me, personally :)

The speed is indescribable. I've seen Indycars race at Pocono on the inside of turn 3 back when they used to come there in the late 2010s, and seeing a car just go 220mph flat through what usually is a 130mph corner for a NASCAR Cup car at the time looked literally unreal. The cars just looked like they were sped up footage at that speed. I really hope to make it to the Indy 500 one day to experience that again.

Hey, maybe we even met and just didn't realize :D I was at Pocono for the 2016 race, and I fully agree about the speed of these things. Practice and quali were already super impressive, especially on the lowest level of the grandstand as you're only a few feet away.

But on race day, it was even crazier. It took multiple laps for my eyes to adjust to the cars flying by at these speeds in packs - I could not track them with my eyes at first. Complete sensory overload in that regard :D

Strictly speaking about simracing, and the cars I tested, I don't have a clear favourite on this regard, but I do remember some cars across the years that they made me yell WOW first time I used them in game, even if some turned out to not be very realistic...

Grand Prix 2
Grand Prix Legends - Ferrari 312 OG
rFactor 1 - F1 SR's Ferrari 643
iRacing - Corvette C6.R
Assetto Corsa - Ferrari F2004 ACFAN mod
Automobilista 2 - McLaren F1 GTR

I'm definitely leaving out a lot of great examples, but those stick on my memory after all these years :)
