RaceRoom Goes Sideways: Drifting To Be Added In 2025

After a very busy Summer including its biggest update yet, RaceRoom looks set to keep up its extensive refresh - which will also include drifting in 2025.

With its big September update, RaceRoom broke new ground - for the first time, historic tracks would be available in the sim due to the addition of Diepholz, AVUS and classic Hockenheim. Developer KW Studios is eager to conquer more uncharted territory, however: Drifting is set to arrive in the sim in 2025!

As early as April 2024, the studio had already been experimenting with the discipline. At ADAC SimRacing Expo 2024, the upcoming mode was available to test on a motion rig, previewing what lies ahead. As the teaser implies, the Driftbrothers' BMW E30s were at the visitors' disposal for going sideways. Indeed, the cars have been created based on input and feedback of Johannes and Elias Hountondji.

We had a brief try of RaceRoom's sideways content and found it to be quite challenging, so it looks like it is not going to be a matter of jumping in and immediately pulling off impressive drifts. Instead, practice seems to be the name of the game - we are already looking forward to giving the upcoming mode a closer look as soon as we can.

Just this week, KW Studios has deployed another update to RaceRoom, further overhauling the title's graphics, as well as updating the Salzburgring and Hungaroring to 2024 specs.

What do you make of the RaceRoom drifting teaser? Let us know in the comments below and join the discussion in our RaceRoom forum!

I like drifting but would prefer BTCC 1994 for example....
This.
ATCC too please. There's a rich history of racing down here in Australia that no games have officially tapped into. There are some excellent mods for AC (of course) but some of battles are epic with the older Holden/Ford and even more brands as you go back.

@raceroom - how about an Antipodean DLC collectors set...
First DLC - 2000's cars (going to be easy, two brands) and tracks, such as Phillip Island, Surfers Paradise, Sandown, etc.
Second DLC - 1990s car pack, the Adelaide track.
Third DLC - 1980's cars and tracks - getting a period correct Bathurst in there (the one from AMS2 is mega)

Sounds like a stack of work, and yes the tracks... but then most of these tracks exist as assets in other games, surely there's some licensing to be had?

The cars... actually a lot of the cars are also floating around, certainly the 90's are covered in RRE already.

I'd pay exceptional money for that lot.

(also Straight Four... if they can't, please help!)

Edit: For those of you north of the equator...
Check the cars in these lists.

There is absolutely NOTHING in sim racing that I care about LESS than drifting. Seriously, I just don't care. I will never spend one second doing that. I love RaceRoom but they are LONG overdue for an upgrade to their graphic engine. Please concentrate on that and leave drifting to AC and the modding community.

Would fit more to AMS2 (Ive watched lot of the Super V8 races and you are right. There some cool tracks for sure. Adelaide and Bathurst is already available and there are already Super V8s too (is that the correct name?)

Some 70s racing series (Mustangs/Camaros and so on) would be also great.
But all this for RR would be also cool.

I prefer paying for the E36 but I can't get it, won"t pay for drift, no interest, but it can be cool to watch video on youtube, better than paying it and not using it ;)

I am always amazed at the audio perfection in this game.... I don't understand why it's not more popular. It has the best and huge selection of tracks and cars, a great feal of being connected to the road (I know I have a 6 DOF rig)... Perhaps, the fact it's impossible to find good servers for racing in the US might be the issue?. Not sure...

R3E was my go to for several years. My first multiplayer racing was in R3E, also my last. It's where I learned "people" are not fun to race against because I can't trust them. It got to the point I could tell by a users country flag if I was going to be punted in T1. I didn't/don't enjoy racing with my rear view mirror. R3E had really good AI and I ended up spending a lot of time racing against them. Then I got bored of that and spent hours doing leaderboards. But long loading times, Error 13's (if I remember correctly), always online, and the focus on the Europeans turned me off over time. For me, R3E will probably always rank right up there as one of my favorite sims. It looks like they're trying to reinvigorate it and that's great and I truly wish them success. So much content for 50 bucks.

Hmmm, hard to say about this. Personally, I'd prefer different additions to RRE to keep it current and offer a similar experience to other games. I'd rather have got night+rain. The good thing is, the community will be the best measure of success. You have people like me who won't return to their RRE game and dlc packs until rain and night are added. That won't happen for a looooooong time. So, I don't use the platform and won't buy more content. I own almost all of it regardless.

Others that love drifting can add it. But will it attract new people to the platform/save it. I'm not convinced it will. Drifting can be had elsewhere. Either way, their choices will either see limited success (for drifting), or be a huge fail and extra nail in the RRE coffin. My guess is the latter.

RRE was a very popular simulator until they ruin all settings that we created during years before update in 2019. I lost all my interest about it then, all my settings and old leaderboard lapstimes became worthless overnight. The game is still good, but that update was a little bit too much and rude. It is that simple to ruin everything.

instead of drifting (which I personally have zero interest in) add a mod store and see the games popularity explode

The biggest problem is in drifting that you need people which know what they do and are determinated.
Drifing in public lobby will be a mess.
I drove just for fun some public servers in CarX Drift and this was a mess at 99%.
When we join a normal racing lobby in RRE so most of the time its a crashfest.
Most of the people arent able to drive a normal track without crashing so now imagine such a public drfit lobby :)
But hey...probably one car will be for free so i will probably try it but this will be a short visit i guess....

Drift in the game is not at all interesting to me and its purchase. I'm much more interested in the 1990-2000 BTCC series with all the tracks. I would buy it straight away without thinking for a second.

Raceroom just keeps getting better, maybe I'll finally learn to drift. I don't know why it is not more popular, the main complaint I hear is that most of the content is behind a paywall. How many racing games live up to expectations and give you the opportunity to play them for as long as you like before buying the game/content? It is a better gaming model in my opinion than other racing games. I own it all and I love it, but too each their own.

drift in the game is not at all interesting to me and its purchase is not much more interesting than the BTCC series of 1990-2000 with all the tracks. I would buy it right away without hesitation for a second.
This will probably never happen as the BTCC rights holders will probably be a problem

in last 2-3 years audio in this game declined and many of newly released cars has some sort of sound glitches, idk why is that but I'm tryin to report it on discord and hopefully it will be improved
the only thing that is kinda weird to me is how these passed quality checks like that and nobody cared about it or doesn't bother enough to report it - maybe most people play on speakers instead of headphones because it's much harder to notice it on speakers 😒
