Ride A Rollercoaster In Assetto Corsa

Some racetracks with plenty of elevation change are described as rollercoasters, but how about an actual one? OverTake community member @taishow7 has created just that for Assetto Corsa.

Most sim racers will hear the words "Rollercoaster mod for Assetto Corsa" and assume someone has found a mod for the Algarve circuit or a similarly undulating venue. But of course, the modding community are not bound by serious racing content 100% of the time. There are running dinosaurs and Rainbow Road in AC after all, so maybe an actual rollercoaster is not too farfetched.

In fact, it is not. Made by user @taishow7, the Roller Coaster mod for Assetto Corsa comes with its own car labelled the LSG EXTRA RIDE, and the track itself comes in at just under one kilometre in length. It is said to be situated in Yokohama, Japan and seems to be be based on the real life diving "Vanish!" ride in Cosmo World - albeit without any underground sections.

Your eyes do not deceive you, it is an actual rollercoaster in Assetto Corsa. Image: @taishow7

Loading It Up

If you download the mod, maybe be prepared for the overstimulating sudden loud sounds. When you load in, there is a siren-like noise and even some music if you put it in broadcast camera, but most importantly, if you have a horn mapped, press it and the driver will enthusiastically scream and raise their arms. Whee!

The fact the rollercoaster car is on rails means you do not have to put in any steering inputs. Just put it into gear, floor the throttle and go around to your heart's content. Be aware that you can garner damage, so if you go around often enough at high enough speed, it may be possible to break the ride. Additionally, there is a function to turn on the lights all along the cart, which looks amazing at night.

After installing the mod, it is advised to disable the Active Solid pieces, dirt, bits of grass etc. in the Custom Shaders Patch tab under Particles FX.

Maybe Another Rollercoaster Mod?

Now, how to bring racing and rollercoasters even closer together? Considering we are racing fans, what is a brand we all know? You know, from Italy, races in F1 - Ferrari, of course. Next to the Yas Marina track in Abu Dhabi is Ferrari World, a theme park that has the distinct honour of housing the fastest roller coaster in the world: Formula Rossa.

That rollercoaster can go from a standstill to its top speed of 149mph in under four seconds. To see it in action, have a watch of this video from 2010 when Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were teammates at Ferrari. Just imagine a Formula Rossa mod in VR...

Hahah!
What are my thoughts?
My immediate thoughts, coming from another thread, that this is high octane fuel on the fire for those who speak disparagingly and conscending about AC and that "this sim is only wreckfest and drifters and blahblah".

For me, it is just a testimony that AC CAN be used for many different things than core racing -
I've even witnessed simmers tumbling around as dinosaurs in the jungles in this sim - but that core offline racing still DO exist for a vast number of users of the sim.

Myself, I'll always use this sim to immerse myself in a simulated world of the heyday of sports car racing in the 20s, 30s, 50s and 60s when the driver behind the wheel made the difference. Admit it can also include be cruising around in a classic sled in open landscapes, on the way home from a race venue in the very same vehicle that you took part in the race with. Just adding immersion of the endless soul from those times. Mostly in VR.
So to me this is just another purpose for AC.

So completely OK with me to explore yet more possibilities of various sims.

One does not exclude the other.

Just because it's not a 100% online race sim, you don't have to talk down about it.
Now the spinal reflex responsers will conclude I'm a die-hard AC fan. But I cannot even tell if AC is my prime sim, I'm really switching back and forth between +30 yo sims and the freshly new boys and girls on the market.
I just reach for the good things in each sim and don't deal with what I don't like. It is of course probably easier for me as a 99% offline racer.

I think it's a reaction to AC fans jumping into other game threads and using its success as a weapon against them.
I'm pretty sure it's been the entry game for many in racing games and the accomplishments modders have achieved is remarkable in making it great.
Unfortunately the actual racing sp side is still pretty hit and miss, but it's to its credit that people can enjoy it in so many different ways and have fun with cars and tracks from so many eras.

My first thought is that would be interesting in VR.

My second is that surely there is a VR roller coaster game.

My third thought is why I am writing this when I could be looking for a roller coaster VR game....
Youtube VR edition in various VR headsets will itself deliver you plenty of 360° free-POV roller coaster VR experiences, as a poor involuntary passenger :D

I see your point, but what are we going to do about those small minded comments and general attitude. AC, as so much to offer, so why not enjoy the so many facets of this gem. I use AC a lot, yet I am not drifting, not cruising in Tokyo, spent many hours this week on the Montreal track with various F1 era cars. The better question is why are so many people, and they are a lot of them, enjoy all those different aspect in AC in particular and not in other modable Sims? Because they enjoy it and because AC can do it.

Understandable reaction, but why can't we just be happy that we have AC, ACC, AMS2, RF2, LMU, tec... available to us all to enjoy.
Why are the few die hard RF2 users so upset when we see one of the true SIM enjoy broad appeal success. It does not take anything away from them.
Because their is so many more fans to AC than any other SIM, even more than all of them put together, judging by how many (actually) play the game, it is bound that some of them will react to some zealots comments that a less played game is "superior" when it is not to them.
Lest not forget that AC players also play the other games, and probably, like me, even enjoy them as well.

You're asking the wrong person, I've never understood the mindset that wants to dictate how others should have fun with the games they enjoy and choices they make.
Nor can I understand why more don't appreciate the breadth of driving games and the quality we can enjoy today, that might be an age thing but remembering when Night Driver was all that I could play on the Atari 2600 and comparing it to today's offerings.
I could rant on but then I'd need to warn myself for going off topic.

This
All those supposedly fun mods just take away all the seriousness of AC
Assuming there is any "seriousness" in any SIM, which would need to be demonstrated, how is adding something fun taking away anything from AC?
Did it remove any "serious" activity that you are enjoying in AC?

Taking themselves seriously and the SIM they have elected to use, preferable exclusively, as god forbid they could enjoy more than one, that would be sacrileges, is, in my opinion, the root of all this bigotry.

SIM racing is suppose to be fun and to be enjoyed. :)

Nah, I would expect such a fun in arcade games like nfs, forza or gta, maybe we should include ac in that group. The joy of simracing comes from the possibility of drive a race car as fast as possible around a track or a rally stage imaging we're Schumacher or whoever you liked when you were a child.
Oh boy, I'll bet you're fun at parties - assuming you actually get invited.
Have a nice day

Or maybe, just maybe, said users recognize that "toying around" is all AC is good for, and nothing more, and it doesnt cater to their needs. Maybe there is a reason why most serious leagues still use RF2. Maybe there is a reason why most people that want serious competition are all in ACC or iRacing. Maybe there is a reason why people who want good offline racing are racing in AMS2, LMU, or older games. Maybe just maybe, nobody is "upset", but some of us can recognize that all this talk about "a sim with mass appeal" is bullcrap, because i can do the exercise in reverse, and say that people are trying to mod sim aspects into BeamNG, because the physics in it are so good in certain areas, better than all the "sims" (AC included).

Or maybe, just maybe, what really upsets some AC fans when other people make those remarks, is the fact that deep down they know that AC actually "lost" out the serious sim "battle" (whatever that was), and that people who actually want to seriously simulate racing choose other platforms, and the best AC can hope for is to be a good "practice tool".

Some food for thought :)

Whoever wrote the article did it as always to create controversy about AC and you/we fall for it. All his articles about AC have negative aspects, he never reported significant tracks or cars or other interesting aspects.
To those who say that only the "others" are simulators for serious championships, I just say, continue to have fun with what you like, but don't spit mud on what others like.
