Montréal is the location for round 9 of the 2024 Formula One World Championship. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been the setting for many a fantastic race - here's our preview of the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix.

Holding its first Grand Prix back in 1978, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has technical chicanes with very little room for error as well as long straights which tend to promote overtaking and on-track battling. And that is something F1 fans have so far been starved of in 2024.

The track is at the top of many of the drivers' lists for their favourite destinations on the calendar. The high-commitment circuit has walls to punish even the bravest of drivers, as it is technically a street circuit comprised of public roads. Especially the Wall of Champions on the outside of the final chicane has ended many a driver's Grand Prix.

70 laps of the 4.6-kilometer circuit make the Canadian Grand Prix one of the longer events on this year's calendar. Drivers have no the guarantee of a completely dry weekend with the area's unpredictable weather forecasting, either, as the 2011 edition showed in particular. This could spice up the weekend regardless of who is on top after qualifying.

Ocon And Sainz in 2025

Leaving the principality of Monaco, the news has been fairly slow initially. The major talking point was Esteban Ocon leaving Alpine at the end of the 2024 season. This leaves the Frenchman currently without a seat for 2025. There are several teams with seats potentially open - but is it too little too late?

With Nico Hülkenberg leaving for Sauber/Audi and Kevin Magnussen at the top of the FIA's naughty list, the American outfit Haas is looking likely to open its doors to at least one new driver. Carlos Sainz, who is also chasing a drive for 2025 after being thrown to the roadside in favour of Lewis Hamilton by Ferrari, could also be a fantastic option for the American team. But with either of these two drivers want to go to a team at the back of the field? Especially after the season that Sainz is having in the scarlet car?

Rumours regarding the Spaniard seem to point to Williams, with a contract apparently having been signed already.

Perez Shocks Paddock After Swift Monaco Exit

Meanwhile, many believed that the writing was on the wall for Sergio Perez at Red Bull. With the team's proven record of ditching drivers swiftly if expectations are not met, fans thought Perez was destined to be just another Red Bull statistic after his Monaco crash that saw him eliminated after not even three corners.

However, the Milton Keynes-based team have signed the Mexican on for another two years. A surprise to some, but a welcome show of faith in what is a very cutthroat sport in 2024.

In an interview with Sky Sports after the Monaco Grand Prix, Perez said: "I am delighted to be staying here to continue our journey together. Being part of the team is an immense challenge and one I love. We have a great challenge this year and I have full trust in the whole team that the future is bright here, and I am excited to be part of it."

2026 Formula One Car Regulations Revealed

Just before the Canadian Grand Prix, Formula One dropped a bombshell on the F1 world by released the highly-anticipated 2026 car regulations.

These regulation changes are designed to drastically change the design of the aerodynamics first and foremost.

F1-2026-Regulations-Car-Render.jpg

  • All cars will be 30 kg lighter
  • The width of the cars has been reduced by 100mm
  • The cars' wheelbase have been reduced by 200m
  • 18 inch wheels
  • Downforce reduced by a whopping 30%
  • Drag reduced by an even bigger amount, 55%
  • DRS in gone in favour of 'Active Aero'
  • Reduced ground effect
  • All-wheel arches have been removed

These changes are quite significant compared to where the cars are now, especially with active aerodynamics coming in in favour of DRS. With Audi taking over from Sauber in 2026 as well, the grid will look very very different to what you are currently used to seeing. Let us know in the comments what you think about the new regulations!

It looks like it will be a real season, the RB is no longer dominant in the hands of Verstappen in particular. Perez where was he yesterday? Again! while he has a contract extension. Verstappen is not going to stay with Redbull in the future, I'm sure. I also think that Horner has offended some important people. But this season I can only applaud it!!! More competition Ferrari, Mc Laren, Mercedes. Oh yes... why is Jacques Villeneuve so fond of kicking Daniel Ricardo. Easy to score?? He was mistaken. pathetic this Mr. Villeneuve who used to be 1x world champion in a very dominant Williams. Nothing special about the old F1 champion and certainly not at the level of his father. He needs attention :poop::cry:

a fun fact... which not many people know...The song Aint no mountain high enough was recorded at the world expo a few meters from this circuit. With two of the best soul singers of the time and a truly classic song Tammi Tyrel and Marvin Gaye both did not grow old R.i.p.

Terrible qualifying for ferrari but apparently they have a good race pace, anyway.. love fernando mocking them again xD.. and the comparison between max and checo is getting more and more ridiculous, max always there despite red bull not being dominant.. hope to see a good race!

He was better than his father though. JV is a CART, indy 500 and F1 champion. And what he said seemed to have waken up Danny Ric, who had his best qualy in a long long time. So maybe he is on to something by giving him some tough love.

perhaps Villeneuve should become Ricardo's new manager ?? :roflmao: ;)

No, not a fan of Mr. Villeneuve here, but you're right Richard! He certainly won some important championships alongside that dominant Williams, but I never saw him as anything special.

his father (Gilles) is labeled as a mythical F1 driver and an artist!!! of the greatest in the history of this sport and he certainly had a great chance of becoming world champion! if fate didn't happen at Zolder the way it did. It would be a matter of time, just like Stefan Bellof who was also not allowed to grow old... the history of Prost, Senna would certainly have been different. So certainly do not share the opinion that son Jacques was better.

But that's just my personal opinion

Wow what a great race, definitely!! 3 teams actually fighting for the win, this is awesome, exactly what we need :D.. congrats to max, nice win here, all the guys overtaking each other and trading positions, great job!

Ah not sure what was going on with ferrari, terrible and unexplainable.. and the same for checo's performance xD

Leclerc went on a nostalgia tour after his 1st home win, back to his old Ferrari luck.

Checo literally clipped his own wing, Red Bull gives you wings, lets park it in the barrier then... again xD. Luckily being loyal and supporting towards Hornier payed off.

Such a shame for Albon.

Double DNF for Ferrari & Williams, Damn. Zhou has heard the news or realized he was done for a couple of races ago and seemingly lost all faith, like Kvyat, and has been nowhere since.

Wow, what a spectacle.
Poor Leclerc (and Ferrari) from hero to zero in just one race.
side note: Logan Sargeant has outqualified Sergio Perez for the second weekend in a row.
Going to be a long 2 years for half the RB team.

Sounds like they have performance clauses that could terminate the contract after 1 year if his current malaise continues.

Perez better stop or no longer drive for a top team, Max is doing the constructor championship on his own and it shouldn't be like that. I also don't see Perez beating Norris and Piastri anytime soon. I am especially impressed with these guys and the Mc Laren team. Ferrari had a classic Ferrari day. I also didn't understand why they suddenly had no speed.

I think i lost faith in himself and the car. He was dreaming of becoming the best.
But those dreams are shattered.
Instead he should be forgetting about Verstappen and only focus on his own performance.
Now he is driving around in a poor mental state, and a car that feels like it's driving on eggshells, with a mantra going at every corner... don't crash. Making car control even trickier if you don't commit.
We all know when your (sim)head is not in the moment but gets distracted by whatever we make mistakes.
You miss braking points by a few meters or brake a bit to hard and you're toast.
Especially in F1 where every small mistake comes to haunt you for the whole weekend.
His mistakes even haunt him the next race, by spreading debris over the track while limping back to the pits.
Might almost be an idea to ask Daniil Kvyat back :D He would mess up less.

I don't think that visiting the 'losers pen' every week to tell the press a true but new story without pointing at himself every race weekend is helping either, he really needs to sit down with himself and get over it...
he's going to have to ask himself some quite hurtful questions, and he can only reply with what will really will be quite brutal answers, once he gets that out of the way, 'that understanding.. that Max is and always will be on another platform' he will/might/should settle down and be the best that he can be for Himself, for Red Bull and for Mexico.
I really hope he gets his head sorted , and soon, because the deal that he's been given at Red Bull is a lifeline to more wins, there's not another team on the gird that can or will give him that, and to be honest they've been very good to him, as I think he's become the longest serving 'second' driver the team's ever had,
And yes, he gave the team the only One-Two in the drivers championship they've ever had, given Max's remarkable record that year he should have had it a lot easier.

First the new regs for 2026

  • All cars will be 30 kg lighter Same power?
  • The width of the cars has been reduced by 100mm Uh...more please
  • The cars' wheelbase have been reduced by 200m Shortie wanna be a thug
  • 18 inch wheels Same Same
  • Downforce reduced by a whopping They won't be able to drive upside anymore ?
  • Drag reduced by an even bigger amount, 55% Will this add speed because car is lighter?
  • DRS in gone in favour of 'Active Aero' Can this be used at any time regardless of "zones"?
  • Reduced ground effect Adrian just became normal
  • All-wheel arches have been removed Makes off road excursions more fun

On the race. That actually was a race. Even though I figured Max was going to win, it was a race. Now the bad part is, since every sport is trying to manufacture what they believe is entertainment, F1 will probably contract rainmakers to create rain at different points in every race.

Fire hoses angled at the track and fired off at supposedly random times(in fact tho, only when a RED car drives by)

quickly tried it. I didn't have much time this evening. 6 laps with the Aston at Le Mans. Wow I'm impressed!!
