Hi,

downloaded racer from this link, found on the racer.nl website, it states the latest version is

INSTALLATION OF V0.5.4 BETA 1 (LATEST)
http://www.liflg.org/?catid=6&gameid=13

is that so? seems you guy are using v 0.8.8.1

Anyway I can't get the game to load, I chmod +ux the .bin file I downloaded, launched the installer with sudo to install it globally and I get this when I type 'racer' in the terminal

Code:
$ racer
--- application start ---
** [racer/6540] Can't open log file (QLOG)
QApp: new QDisplay

Hi. The latest Racer versions work great here in 9.04 Jaunty 64 bit but need Wine and Wine Tricks, I don't think you'd stand any chance getting them to run otherwise.

There were some detailed instructions about what you needed to configure to get Racer working in Ubuntu under Wine but they were lost when RSC went down, I don't think the person who posted them is a member over here yet. As I remember you need to install some of the Windows DLLs through Wine Tricks but that's all I can remember I'm afraid.

054 is ancient, I've never tried it so can't help you there. Unfortunately that's the way it is with Racer, promises of new Linux/Mac versions come and go but they lag years behind the Windows versions. I'd really like a good up to date Linux version too, you're not alone.

Yeah I realized after posting that recent releases are windows only so I used my installed wine (latest available on ubuntu 9.10 repository), didn't knew there are tricks needed, I just deselected HDR, fullscreen and blooming in the graphic options and all is working fine, maybe the trick is to load OpenGL DLL (racer is opengl right?) into wine so that it can render advanced graphics, anyway I made an Openbox windows VM and installed it there, openbox has a 3d virtual driver that makes everything works.

sudo xhost +

I think will give racer full access to the screen also install the vcredist_x86 package into wine.

Its been awhile

ps I never did get 54b1 to run on 64bit either.....
