Simulating KERS with the boost option

Currently im reproducing the 2009 F1 season, however im trying to replicate the effects of KERS in game, however i am finding that the time in boost varies wildly each time i press for KERS/BOOST/P2P. Sometimes it is the allocated 10 seconds. Sometimes it can literally last 1.5 laps. Are there any hard and fast rules that i should be looking for? I can supply the srs lines (which are Reiza default) and the relevant lines used in the engine.ini files.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
