Do you always use the "correct" shifting method in simracing as the car has in real life or do you use paddle shifters or sequential for all

*"I use the correct method" means you follow real life as closely as possible.

EDIT: Changed the wording to: I use whatever the car has in real life

I don't have a sequential shifter and converting the TH8A from H to sequential is a waste of time, due to how bad it feels. So, I cannot do the "correct" way.

Also, why the emphasis on "correct"? Is this more sim racing elite-ism or something?

I'm almost ashamed to say I use the Paddles, but in my defence I always use the clutch to move from standstill* but I have the G29 and the little floppy ploppy pretend gear changer does not imerse me in the least, the sonuds it makes are that of a childs cheap plastic christmas toy, and the clutch pedal bite point often locks the rear wheels (RWD car) when changing down, I primarily race GTL-GTR2 offline, and Asetto Corsa online (albeit only occasionally)
I do blip the gas through down changes but AC sometimes autoblips out of sinc with me which in itself causes an irregular feeling.
Hopefully, when an article is generated here on RD/Overtake as to exactly what is needed in a sim race set up for Historics for the NOOB, I'll flash some cash and get rid of this junk from Logitech, currently there's so much information everywhere I can't see the wood from the trees (old and easily distracted)

*I also lift throttle (.3 to .5 sec) for upshifts.

I do not judge wether you are an esporter, arcade, gamer, simmer or whatever you are so no - the quotation marks is simply to point out that some people call it correct and me not trying to do that.
So no one really have to be offended.

But to be brutally honest, you do not have have to believe in simracing eliteism just because you like realism do you?

Correct! I am firmly in the camp of "race the way YOU enjoy it the most", so while I may not understand certain choices, I won't judge anyone for it.

For me, this means using the shifting method the actual car I am driving virtually used, as I am trying to immerse myself into what it would be like to drive this particlar car. That means H-shifter for the cars that had it, manual sequential if needed, paddles for the modern stuff - you get it.

My absolute favorite are H-shifter cars including heel-and-toe. For me, it is the most engaging way to drive a car in sim racing, and it doesn't feel right to run a car with that type of gearbox with paddles, for instance. But it also took quite a lot of practice to get used to it - and I understand anyone who wants no part in that :D

Been there, but for me, it was more about the hassle of changing it over. Eventually, that made me get an SHH shifter, which can be switched from H-pattern to sequential in a matter of seconds. Probably doesn't hold a candle to proper sequential-only shifters, but it does the job and feels decent in sequential mode regardless.

The wording of the first choice is confusing, especially at the front page (without context). It also sounds a tad 'arrogant' if I may say? I understand it is intended to mean that we 'adapt our physical shifter (on the rig) to the one the car we are driving has (on the simulator/game)', but it doesn't read like that straight away... to me at least. So, a few tips to make it more clear perhaps :

1 ) wording it differently, i.e. : "I use the shifting method the car I choose in game has".
2) making it the 4th. choice instead of the 1st. as the previous choices will provide context.

Cheers lads! :coffee:

That is a good idea, thank you! I'll keep that in mind. With the standard these days becoming "paddle shifters and just two pedals on a rig", I guess it might become a bit confusing regarding what the H-shifter stuff entails. Will try to shed some light on that :)

Have always used paddle shifters in sims. My first wheel, a Thrustmaster T2, had a sequential shifter on the right side of the housing, but that didn't "feel" right, so I made paddle shifters for it (couple of PB switches, some coil cord, plastic paddles, all mounted to the back of the steering wheel spokes).

I realize for 90% of cars out there a gated shifter is more realistic; but realism is also feeling the car, the suspension movement, the chassis flex, the G forces, etc., which you process subconsciously to moderate your driving. The best sim in the world provides none of this, only visual cues and a bit of input from the front wheels via FFB, so I figure the slight advantage from using paddle shifters helps alleviate the major loss of tactile input I would get in a real car.

Paddles and auto-clutch for me, but I edit the cars files so there is a throttle lift and delay when shifting gears to "simulate" using a manual gearbox with clutch. I am 100% offline with AI.

I mostly use the correct method, but sometimes I prefer to use the sequential shifter on H shifter cars just because non-FFB H shifters are not realistic at all
