Sunny skies greeted the 11 teams as Season 2 was launched with the Pre-Season test at Silverstone. Jack Hunsley and Tapio Rinneaho took the new DTK out for a spin, but while the team continued with Toyota for a second season, it was those who took another Japanese manufacturer that really reaped the rewards.
Without further ado, the engine values for Season 2 are as follows:
Toyota seem to be the largest fall from grace, the defending champions falling down the order. In terms of teams, you feel that Speedy decision to move to Bugatti power may have been a poor choice, the French manufacturer hasn't made a Grand Prix engine for a long time, and this was sadly evident. In fact, any Volkswagen group engine seemed to be behind the pace, with Porsche and Skoda also behind the pace somewhat. The one thing that they can look forwards to though is hopefully a better turnover of upgrades.
But to the test and unsurprisingly the Apex of Daniel Harvey was front and centre as he swept to the fastest lap, though teammate Joel Rautavaara must be scratching his head as to where he lost 4 tenths of a second. BRT was strong with Utzer in second and Diehl in third, sandwiching McNamara. Black took his Speedy to the heights expected last season, but no doubt a height that this season will be tough to manage again. Honda powered cars stuck close to one another, the Cedars holding some of the qualifying pace we saw from them in S1 it seems. DTK have no doubt been hit the hardest, the Toyota is down on power, and with the RDFIA not being able to pass regulations, its going to be a long road for the Japanese engine maker to get back lost ground.
Commentators Comments: Well now that we are here, it seems that there will be a big shake up. Honda seems to be the right engine to have right now, and not one but two teams are the lucky ones to have it in the back. Looking at it, DTK have a long hill to climb if they want to repeat their success, but while wins may not come, they can guarantee themselves points with strong strategy. Apex and BRT may look to have an advantage right here, but we mustn't forget that their strengths are in single lap dashes, not necessarily a full race.
That concludes the coverage of the engine unveils and pre season test. We'll have a pre season analysis for the teams soon. Otherwise, one week until we race!
