Question About Karting in AMS

Or perhaps this is a question about Karting in general (which I admittedly know nothing about).

With the "less-than-overwhelming" praise for yesterdays early-access release of KartKraft, I decided to take a look at the Karts in AMS instead. Although I have controls set for manual gearshift (using a Logi G29), I never get it out of first gear.

So, do karts not have multiple gears, or do I have something set up wrong?

It depends on the kart you choose.

As I recall the only AMS kart that has gears is the shifter kart.

All the other models are CV type transmissions. Like a snowmobile or scooter.

If you are new to karts then use the CV types to start out... the shifter kart is ultimately faster but its is a bit harder to drive and the required driving style is a bit unusual.

Karts in general are quite a different beast compared to an open wheeler or tin top. It takes some getting used too, but the rewards come quickly once you get the hang of it.

Interesting, I always found the opposite true. I feel like the shifter karts drive more like regular cars and the direct drive karts are harder to learn.

Karts are unique in many respects. No suspension, high power to weight ratio, extremely low CG, and a 1:1 steering ratio. Not typical race cars for sure. The shiftier kart adds a complexity to an already unusual driving challenge. The driving demands are very different compared to other racing cars to get the most out of the kart. IMHO
