Processor (PGA478)

Hey lads, I'll make this quick and simple. I need someone who knows about Processors to just fill me in a little, I have a Pentium 4 with PPGA478 socket and I'd like to upgrade to a core 2 Duo, socket PGA478, whats the difference and will they work together?

Pentium 4:

My (hopefully) future CORE 2 Duo:

Cheers guys,

Mitch.

You need to check your motherboard will support whatever cpu you decide to buy.

Might require a bios flash to be able to use them.

What mobo have you got mate??

I do not think this will fit or work on your motherboard buddy, as this core2duo version is more for Laptops, unless you have a motherboard that support this
i remember reading once a long time ago that socket 478 on desktop is different than the laptop motherboard version, so upgrading to that processor is a no go.

plus your motherboard chipset might be to old to support it, even with a bios update (and also your ramcard might have problems supporting it, if your ramcard is a DDR version)

if I am you, I would upgrade the motherboard completely with a new processor and ramcard (if your ramcard is not a ddr2/3 that is ;))

Robin, thanks, I'll get to that in a sec.

Chris, I have 2GB DDR2 RAM. As long as the socket is the same it should work I think, but that's what I'm trying to find out; Laptop Processors usually say "Mobile" I think.

yes normally it says mobile if it is for a laptop when buying, but what I know is that the Pxxxx series are mobile versions. Also the TDP points out that the chip is optimized for mobile use, as desktop has a higher TDP.

and now by checking a bit more on the link that you gave then you noticed the following on the top of the page

Home > Intel® Processors > Intel® Core™2 Duo Mobile Processor > Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8000 Series > P8400

you can download and use CPU-Z to check motherboard specifications ;)

Yeah, "mobile processor". The links weren't for a laptop I double checked - I just wanted to know about the sockets because my current processor I think is the same socket as the one I'm looking to buy, correct?

EDIT: My mistake I didn't notice that.

I'll check my Mobo.

Honestly the best thing you can do is to pick up a resonable 775 socket board and get an e5200 or similar. had one of these myself and there cracking overclockers. and as 755 is being fazed out you should be able to pick up a bargain. guessing your hdd will be ide not sata so make sure you have enough ide ports on said mobo

much better to go 775 if ya can afford it

eg

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-340-IN

just an example. better boards out there

5400 is a dc

with a 775 you could if ya wanted to stick a quadcore in it a year down the line.

got no upgrade path with the 478 socket really. the 775 opens up a lot of choice.

Well I have some bad news
by looking at the motherboard specs, i do not think that only a simple motherboard and processor will do for your system
as you have an motherboard that does not go with current generation (graphics card, ramcard and possibly harddrive)
