Rovanperä has two nationalities: Finnish on his father's side and Latvian on his mother's side. He started competing in the Latvian Rally Championship because due to his age he was not allowed to compete in Finland. He was the 2016 and 2017 Latvian open class champion and the 2015 Latvian R2 class champion.
He has used the Latvian flag during the 2017 CIR season.
