[Painting] How to make custom car skins not glossy?

Hello everyone,

I've recently tried my hand at making a skin for the Audi from the EEC GT3 mod using GIMP, but I've run into an issue that many others seem to have encountered - the dreaded MIRROR FINISH. I've heard that this is something to do with specular maps not being correct, causing it to be super shiny, but all the methods I've seen to correct this with GIMP have failed to work: DDS plugins didn't work, it only made the car grey, making a black specular map failed to work, it only made the car black, etc. I'm kind of at my wits end here, so if you know the answer (or how to get Photoshop for free!), any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Its to do with the alpha channels in photoshop. Just put a dark channel and it should make the cars less glossy and shiny.
