DiRT Rally 2.0 New DiRT Rally 2.0 Roadbook: Recording Co-Driver Calls

Codemasters have released a second 'DiRT 2.0 Roadbook' earlier today, with a focus on the recording methods of co-driver calls employed with the new simulation...

Much has been made of the potential return to form for the Codemasters DiRT franchise with the upcoming DiRT Rally 2.0, and it looks like Codies are certainly working hard to capture those small details that could potentially mark out this new release as something very special for rally fans.

Bringing in Neil Cole and World Rally Championship winning co-driver Phil Mills for the new title, Codemasters have shown some rather impressive attention to detail in the recording of the all important stage calls for DR 2.0. Strapping Mills to a full D Box motion rig as he blasts around the game stages, Codemasters have spent plenty of effort in trying to replicate the pitch and tone of a real world co-driver as he shouts out the calls from the passenger seat of a rally machine.

Recording each stage a total of three times under different conditions, DiRT Rally 2.0 will utilise different invisible marker points around the stages to prompt the software to engage the appropriate instruction, firmly aiming to give the virtual driver a realistic audio experience behind the wheel.

It really is amazing how much effort Codemasters have put in to getting this important aspect right for the new game, a very positive sign of the level of detail that looks likely to be lavished on DiRT Rally 2.0 when it releases early next year.

DiRT Rally 2.0 will release February 26th 2019.

Sadly the German Co-Driver calls in DiRT Rally 1 were done by three different people who also did it in different styles. I hope these get better this time. I also tried out the English Co-Driver but listening to that one without the help of visible indicators was pretty hard. As far as I know even most professionals get their calls in their mother tongue.

Petter Solberg is norvegian, but his codriver Phill Mills reads the notes in english for him!

Most does, Petter Solberg did not, neither did Henning Solberg for a while (or in Turkey this year when he got 6th overall in the R5 Fabia).
Juha Kankkunen had Finnish co-drivers that read notes in English for him(!). Same with Tomas Rådström when he had Christina Thörner as a co-driver.

And that's what I remember at the moment. I remember I used to use French and German co-drivers in an effort to learn some words and getting used to listen to it. That worked until Richard Burns Rally:whistling:

Tina Thörner Ole. Tina Thörner.

:D

if codmasters made a modern analogue of the RBR and rally trophy or CMR 2.0 with the same number of rally special stages, and a map editor as in rally trophy, would it be too financially expensive?

co driver calls in german in wrc07 are the worst i ever heard, thankfully that was another developer, dirt4 was ok but dirt rally definitely better, except for the couple of mistakes (one of them sending you down a cliff in greece) which never got fully removed, as were the atrocious grammar mistakes in the german text displayed while the stage loaded. hope they get their languages sorted this time.

It would have been amusing to have a co-pilot like Liam Brennan calling out the pace notes.
I know that it's unlikely to be feasible or highly practical, but still: one can dream. :D
That's absolutely... Insane!!! And amazing!
It makes me think how much the sound mixing is bad in dirt rally and dirt 4, the voice of the co driver is always hard to listen to, even by lowering the engine and effects volumes (and by doing so in rallycross the other cars are so loud that you can't hear your own engine). The voices should receive more attention, with more dynamic recording (less compression) and some saturation to make them more distinct. I personnally have to focus on the voice and pay attention, it doesn't feel natural.
