I am sure @Neilski has the techy information.

But watching a thread is something you do to be notified when someone posts there. That you see a thread as "watched" means that you are "watching" it. Not that anyone else are.

So, my guess is that when you make a thread, it automagically is set as "watched" so you are notified when someone posts in your thread ;)

You can watch/unwatch a thread with a button at the top of the page (see pic below). And indeed, the default setting (which you can change if you like) is that any threads you create or reply to will be automatically watched so that the system can alert you when someone replies.
