Is Classic Content Overlooked in Simracing?

Indeed, this is where rF2 is the worst at.
I don't like classic cars
What I don't like with modern cars...too bland, too soulless to drive with a G29, especially the GT3s and I don't feel excited enough to be prepared to budget for a DD amongst numerous reasons.

What I don't like about modern motorsport...let's start with the obsession with spec this and spec that. Don't get me wrong but there have been classics like BMW Procar (before my time) and TVR Tuscan but the way it's been applied to top level series has turned a sport into a joke, Indycars is that example. It's nothing but an excuse for constructors to monopolise the sport and not enable smaller constructors to florish...I can go on but I'll leave it there to not go off subject.

No accounting for taste Bruno.
Nice article. I'm sure it'll get a conversation going.
I really enjoyed GT Legends and think maybe you've been a bit rough on it. IIRC it was based on a modern day, RL series, which raced classic cars (with roll cages etc.) on.... well... modern tracks - but I felt that was fair enough. Just my opinion OC.
Indeed, GTL wasn't a "timid attempt" at all. It was the simulation of a real championship with all its specifications. One of the last true recreation of real series, as GTR2 was.

I've just been capturing clips of Colin McRae Rally 04 as a baseline for my "Every PC Rally Game" YouTube playlist (that'll be coming up in due time). I used a few classic cars (MG, Ford Escort, Group B Audi Quattro) and they all brought different things to the game. Especially the rear-wheel drive, tail-happy cars.

But yeah, I think classic car sim racing, much like people who might watch classic F1 races, are naturally in a minority. Everyone wants to simulate something they follow/watch on TV and the latest = fastest (except for Group B ;-))

Me love new cars on old tracks (GT3s are really fun @ tracks like Riverside, Bridgehampton, Nordschleife, Solitude, Rouen, original Zandvoort, original Oesterreichring, original Imola, etc.)

Love classic cars, their soul, their stories...

Otherwise, considering sims, I just hate the idea of releasing classic cars to race in... modern tracks.

It´s a damn immersion killer IMO, and as the article nicely states, classic cars are not fit for modern tracks...

(nice, let´s project a new and powerful car, the name will be 917, a car projected to be a killer at... Yas Marina, or Shanghai or Baku).

I think the 80s GT/Prototype scene needs more love. I would love to see rf2 for instance recreate the GTO/GTP days of IMSA. Those cars are some of the best looking cars ever raced on a track

Love the old classics, in fact that's just about all I drive in AC now that there are several mods available and you can cobble together your own championships.
But there's a decided lack of the historic circuits needed to go with them.
I'd love to have 1967 versions of Watkins Glen and Mexico but although they were available for RFactor no one has done the AC conversions and I don't have the ability to do it myself.
Indeed! I also drive only classics, namely 1971 NASCAR pack, since months in
AC now. These cars are hard to tame but it's pure joy to drive them because of
the feeling of their raw power in combination with a brutal engine sound. I LOVE IT.
Meanwhile, i have created a custom championship with these cars composed of
36 races, including 12 ovals i have found all over the internet but also the best
existing US roadcourses plus some long gone classic tracks like Kyalami 67(wow)
and of course Lilski's sensational recreations of Bridgehampton and the
legendary Riverside. Unbeatable! Gentlements......start your ENGINES!!!:D

I prefer older cars to contemporary models with couple of exceptions.
Aside from GT3 the mix of competition series today doesn't really enthuse me.
These are hardly slow or ugly.

I think it's very simple: people can relate more to the real racing going on today. You watch GT3 or F1 or DTM on TV and you want to race those cars, because they are the ones for which your heart is beating. Cars from the past are.. from the past, so they surely are amazing etc (I love them) but less people can relate to them because those cars raced when they weren't even born. Of course if you make a groundbreaking sim using vintage cars (like GPL) it's a different story, but in general the rule applies. Take Assetto Corsa, where you can find all sorts of modern and vintage cars: I raced in a DRM league (awesome fun) but we didn't have many participants. No matter how amazing the cars, you need to relate to their real-life counterparts to really want to drive them.

In spite of me preferring modern up to date content over classic, I do like classic content as well. Any quality sim car is good in my book.

My main problem with classic cars is the following: I don't have room for an H-shifter and hell'n'toe-ing with paddles is so unnatural. Brings me out of the immersion.

I would hope for an Assetto Corsa Legends, with their realistic sound that look and the atmosphere, and the love what the have in their products it would be awesome
