How do the smilies work?

Why when I type : plus ) I see a smile like this , but when I type ; plus ) I don't get this :wink2:, when I type : plus / I don't get this :thinking: and so on??????

But Andrew, why is : plus ( the same as : sad : together? You see, there are shortcuts... (shortcutting!!!).

To do with how the smilies are coded into the forum software. Some shortcuts are recognised whereas some others aren't that you maybe used to in other forums and/or messaging systems.

Not all smilie packages use the same shortcuts :wink2:
