GTR2'z common Locations Folder for multi installs

Hi everyone !

For those who have many installs could u help ? I need 2 kno where i'm wrong.
Don't u edit the config file like in Rfactor :tracksdir u kno !!!
Gimme please sum eg of paths because whatever i write in dis config file the game will crash.
Steam version here.

What i did (like Rf):
i created a folder "GTR2"on the same drive (E:\) were i have my steam folder
inside dis GTR2 Folder all my mods+the common locations folder(like Rfactor that works fine !)
So config file:TRACKSDIR=E:\GTR2\LOCATIONS\ and crash !!!
lemme kno ya paths please i really don't want 2 have 2 copy all my tracks in each mod everytime !
Peace out !

No, GTR2 does not recognize alternate paths. You must use symbolic links to point each install to the common folder.

This can be done natively in Windows at least as far back as Vista; there are also utilities that make it easy. Symlinks can be used to point nearly anything to any folder; I save tons of space on my C drive by redirecting all those game files to other drives, have one locations folder for three GTR2 installs, one tracks folder for three N2k3 installs, etc. The main caveat is to remember to never delete the link, through windows stupidity this will automatically delete the folder to which it points; use the commands or utilities to disable it first.

Thanks for this info. I knew of course that deleting the base folder should make the link unvalid but shouldn't even imagine that deleting a link should delete this base folder at the same time.
This is rather ridiculous ! ...but that's Windows ! :D

Why does it need to be ridiculous though.
Simply use PnG Link Tool ;)

I used it since release works 100% as long as you abide by linking tool rules as jgf rightly points out.

With this I service 6 GTR2 folders + PnG for 700+ tracks.

Thank you guys 4 yr fast answers !

Jgf i will give it a try if dis PnG Tool iz no longer available.

Durge Driven what the heck ! when i google PnG tool i only get PNG tool ya kno the picture thing.
R U sure it still exists ? Any "link" (lol).

The P&G tool is just a specialized form of one of the regular symlink utilities. Uploaded to GTR2 Misc section.

I'll keep ya informed soon.
I may not b as fast as u 'cause i'm a french speaker ya kno get the good understanding but i'll do !

I just had the bad idea 2 close Steam and see what happen...CRASH ! (lol)
But don't worry i've understood a little more i will manage it.
Peace !

From what i see,if ur dealing wiv Steam don't be in a hurry 2 click on any GTR2 shortcut
1st thing first Run Steam
2nd Run yr drops
otherwise CRASH !
u'll have 2 uninstall PnG link tool, delete yr kurupt drops,...etc.
U really got 2B CAREFUL wiv dis tool...

Yes as I said it is the same for any linking tool.
If you don't know what you are doing or rush headlong you can delete entire folders in a click.

Difference is this tool was made specially for GTR2.
I don't understand why anyone would use anything else.
Very puzzling.

works 100% as long as you abide by linking tool rules as jgf rightly points out

Especially using this in conjunction with GME mods that control 100% of addons.
I have all stock tracks separated from various GME installs for Standard, HQ Mod tracks, 100 car tracks, Power & Glory tracks .... If you enable and disable anything in wrong order you will screw the pooch.

I learnt the hard way. I deleted a secondary install of GTR2 without thinking, and that deleted all the linked tracks from the main GTR2 locations folder.
