Tips and Tricks section
(comprised of factual information and personal racing experience)

This car
  • Pick at least the Medium compound to cover the race distance of 20 laps savely. The Softslicks' tyre degradation increases drastically after only 4 laps and are to be avoided. Supersofts are only good for one quick Qualifying lap.
  • The Exos S1 is a completely different beast than the standard Exos car.
  • Especially during (tight) corner-exit while hitting the loud-pedal, the rear-end is prone to brake out violently most of the time.
  • Brake hard and ease off the brake pedal quickly - locking up the tyres is easy and the car will loose grip and understeer.
  • Increase resistance of your (Load Cell) brake pedal, either per Potentiometer on the Pedals or increase the brake range in the control options - example. That will help you to aviod locking up the tyres and to modulate brake pressue.
  • Remember that generally, you'll have better retardation under braking, when you do that in a straight line with a stable car, rather than after you turned in already.
  • Driving a Formula car is like driving a dragster - well executed acceleration is important for a good lap time.
  • You may also increase the degrees of steering in your wheel/AC options menu in order reduce steering sensibility and therefore gain more steering/counter-steering precision with this particular car.
  • The setup guide of yours truly is primarily meant to fit GT cars and alike, however the vast majority of points apply to the Exos/S1 as well.
  • Look up the correct tyre temperature ranges and tyre degradation rates for the Exos/S1: click here
  • Avoid contact while racing with the Exos S1. It's very fast and can swirl and change track position rapidly. This is not the BTCC.
Setup tips
  • Like the title suggests, good ol' mechanical grip and low speed prowess is here far more important than powerful aerodynamics.
  • High downforce values mask deficiencies of mechanical grip of your car.
  • To reduce squat of the suspension and increase stability in high speed corners, increase front & rear spring rates.
  • Soft dampers give you more grip in the low speed sections and decrease the effect of curbs.
  • Positive rake (ride height: rear > front) will increase effectiveness of the diffuser, reduce understeer in high speed corners and make the car more complient at low speeds. (High) Positive rake increases the ground effect of the front wing and lets the rear wing face more clean air, both of which enhance their effectiveness.
  • Moar camber is not always beneficial. Camber is effective only up to the lateral grip threshold mid-corner. Even more camber will increase tyre degradation, increase braking distance, amplify effects of over- & understeer, reduce rear traction while accelerating and decrease braking stability.
  • This is a simple one: Don't mess with Toe.
  • The travel range setting is tricky. It negates suspension travel, albeit allows for a lower ride height, which has many benefits, if it is reduced. Hit F5/F6 in the replay and look at the up and downward movements of the double wishbone suspension during low- and high-speed corners (more easily observable in slowmotion). The suspension should do its job right, and for that it needs correct spring rates, ride height and travel range settings.
This Track
  • Good overtaking opportunites are Turns 1, 5, 8, 11, 20.
  • Brake heavy, ease off the brake gently while turning in slowly to prep the car for a direction change.
  • Use 'slow in - fast out' for turns 7, 9, 14, 19, 21.
  • Ease off the throttle before Turn 3, if you can't do it flatout.
  • High downforce values will make you vulnerable on the two long straights at Abu Dhabi.
  • There is generally only one racing line through turns 15 to 19.
  • If you want to take the many chicanes more aggressively, you have to raise the ride height and soften up the dampers.
  • Threshhold-braking will yield you valueable time in the heavy braking zones before turns 1, 8 and 11.
In general
  • A turn is defined by a 'Change in direction'.
  • Take a look back and to the sides of your car at the starting grid before the race - make sure your steering wheel and your tyres are facing the right direction.
  • Be sure to practice race starts with cold tyres to get a clean and fast getaway from the grid - this is also a safety issue to avoid spins and accidents right after the lights go out.
  • You may also share your setups with a short description in the 'Assetto Corsa Setups' forum.
  • Be careful during overtaking and give your fellow drivers enough room to maneuver.
  • Make sure you are sufficiently far alongside the car you want to overtake before committing to a move. Additionally, be sure your fellow driver sees you and is aware/can sense/can predict where you are /where you will be in the next couple of seconds. This will massively reduce unnecessary contact and clumsy accidents.
  • The virtual rear mirror (press F11), the red triangles at the corners of your screen pointing at a close car and a regular look back (map a button) will help you with that.

Event postponed till next Sunday to give you more time to practice.
(and to give you a free Sunday to recuperate from Friday)

Edit:
I recommend this event to all who have the time to join. Abu Dhabi is a different kind of track, that needs more mechanical grip and prowess than simple high aero values. It is an important lesson in the path to raise your proficiency with highspeed formula cars.
