Escape key not working in VR

I recently acquired a VR headset. Great, except the "Escape" key won't exit a driving session and bring up the in-game menu (car adjustments, results, replay, resume, etc.). The only way to leave a session is take off headset and close SteamVR, which then in-turn closes Assetto Corsa completely. This makes Assetto with VR useless for me, as can't work on set ups, etc.
I appreciate it if anyone has found a solution to this issue

Why don't you use Alt F4, or map that combination to a button, or use In-game Keyboard Shortcuts Extension which uses Alt E or define whatever key or key combination you want in settings / controls / system (Content Manager)?

I have mapped alternative buttons to the "pause race" command, i.e. mapped to Esc, and the mapped keys don't work either.

That sounds like what happens when i try to run the game in windowed mode while using vr. If i set it to run in full screen, it's fine. Good luck!

Can you please explain what you mean by "run it in full screen?" How would I do that? I don't know my way around SteamVR, Microsoft mixed reality, etc. all too confusing. detailed guidance appreciated
