mine was a live axle
assetto made the live axle handle a bit weird in some aspects, although they corrected it recently and we gotta have a look again, because the alternative was a de dion indeed...

Very cool. I don't know too much about Caterhams, so did some reading. Interesting that there are these cars with all 3 types of rear suspension.
At any rate, it's very fun to drive as-is, and will be a common sight on my computer screen for a long time. :)

Giving us both a LHD and RHD version is heroic. I'll drive both. But I wish that Kunos had been able to do the same on a few of their cars (Escort, Supra, AE86... I'm looking at you)

Hi Guys ,
do not know if its been mentioned or not ,
but if you duplicate the blur mesh and flip the normals , will be solid both sides ,
so the inner rims will look like the outer rims ,
nothing major but its transparent :)

A teeny tiny little bit absolutely microscopic ui issue: The lhd versions shows up as if it's missing its parent in content manager. I know we can correct it with a couple of clicks everytime you update the mod but as an ocd, i wanted to let you know.

Thanks soooo much for the outstanding work.

I would like to see "Caterham BDR"
The question is, will you do this modification?
AC has a FORD Escort, if take sound bank and physics of the engine, only minor changes him, I think it will not be difficult.

The car makes me drive it more and more, really nice stuff. If I didn't know that it is V3 then I wouldn't care, because how it handles is really good. It is very drivable, but when it bites, it bites and I think it is really cool.

In this case, I thought, that tire model is just a badge, but I know it is not, because obvious reasons. I expect this car to be even better with V10. But it is awesome anyway.

I have spotted one issue, IDK if anybody noticed it already, the shadows on inner screen are rendered when sun is shining from the back end of the car, not when it shines from the front, how it should be. But I like this issue, because it brings something different lol

I totally agree with the car being brilliant. It's about the only one I drive these days.
I just really wish somebody would take care of the sounds. They are pretty irritating IMHO, haha. Low revs are still sort of ok, but once you start revving the engine it starts sounding pretty bad and unrealistic. What I do now is using the default Kunos Escort mkI sounds.
Sounds a lot better. I also tried Fonsecker's soundset, but they are way over the top I think.
If anybody knows a better alternative please tell us.

v10 indeed :p
but agree that the v3 already handled good to me, and i did think back then the V10 is just a badge... sure it's supposed to handle in a more realistic way, but hey, at the end of the day, what matters is the feeling while driving it!
The shadow, i might have an idea, i have two materials for inner/outer shield, probably one i missed the affect alpha thingy :p

@hal4000 : And the sound... XD
that's my source for most of the samples (at high revs)
but that's not my engine. Nor how it sounded

Truly there is no good samples of a 1700ss
this guy here i took some more sample, but as soon as speed picks up, so does the wind (starts at 5min)

and you don't imagine how tricky sound is until you spent few evenings listening and cutting samples! :(
Otherwise you can donate about 8000£ so i can get one from UK

Oh, I know all about how tricky sound is, hehe. No worries mate, I'm pretty sure it will be sorted in due time.... "soon™️"... :whistling:
By the way, looking at that first video one can really appreciate the incredible work you did on
this car. Just look at that interior. Spot on. And listening to it I really think the Escort mkI is not too far off. Now if we could only have hairy hands...

For those of us without a shifter and clutch setup available, could you do us a favor and tweak autoblip?

Level is currently set to 0.7 which isn't enough to maintain stability in downshifts. It needs set to 0.9 for nice smooth downshifts.

I'd also recommend setting static tire pressure down considerably to 15psi for optimal tire pressure with the tires you currently have installed, or raising its optimal tire pressure rating to make 20psi suitable. Under optimal tire pressure in the tyres file just set it to 28 and that will fix it.

I'd also recommend raising the downshift point in the AI file to 3800rpm.

These are simple enjoyment tweaks that makes the car vastly more enjoyable to drive.

Also, please include the default yellow skin as an option, since it appears you spent quite a bit of effort making it and it's not even an option.

Thanks!

...you can also blip during the downshift by your self ;)

thanks for the feedback
  • autoblip is something i didn't know
  • Tyres i changed the last time and put PRESSURE_IDEAL=24 or is there other parameters i missed ? I also increased the range in the setup for pressure for people to play with
  • AI noted i'll change that, i never spent much time with ai to check
  • Yellow skin is available only in RHD, as this was my car :D but there's nothing very special about the skin itself, it's just yellow... dirt & all should be similar. Oh and there's an easter egg on board
i'm writing this down to my to-do list, but i will upload with bigger update probably after summer, nothing's getting done these days, it's too damn hot :p

Or you can set it up correctly like kunos cars are.

Not everyone has a big expensive simulator rig or the space for one.
It should be NOT any kind of offense to you. Just an advice :)

Great to hear  Thanks again for your work.
BTW: I hate your windscreen dirt texture. Ut looks to realistic. Just baaah. I've always the feeling I've to clean it :roflmao:

Thanks.

Okay so PRESSURE_IDEAL=24 is the pressure where the tires get maximum grip, and also the pressure the tires must be at when hot. PRESSURE_STATIC=20 is pressure level the car loads into a track with, the default setting.

Having PRESSURE_STATIC=20 will make the tires at 28psi when hot, which means they're over inflated and have dramatically reduced grip, so every time you get in the car you will need to lower the tire pressure to achieve optimal grip. If you set PRESSURE_IDEAL=28, then every time you load in with the car it will automatically be at optimal tire pressure for best grip without the need to remove tire pressure.

The alternative would be to set PRESSURE_STATIC=15, which will inflate the tires to 24psi when hot, and have them at optimal pressure without changing PRESSURE_IDEAL. 15psi seems like an awfully low value for a street car with street tires, so I recommend just raising PRESSURE_IDEAL to 28, which seems much more reflective of a real car.

I feel like I have overcomplicated the explanation of this but hopefully you understand what I mean.

(Also adding this:)

The autoblip settings are under drivetrain.ini, line 57
[AUTOBLIP]
ELECTRONIC=0 ; If =1 then it is a feature of the car and cannot be disabled
POINT_0=10 ; Time to reach full level
POINT_1=150 ; Time to start releasing gas
POINT_2=180 ; Time to reach 0 gas
LEVEL=0.7 ; Gas level to be reached
-------------

Just change LEVEL=0.7 to LEVEL=0.9 and it'll be perfect.

Ben O'Bro updated Caterham 7 Super Sprint | 1995 with a new update entry:

Final version

Hi there. Long time no patch, we hope it was worth the wait!
Lot of research went into this update.
Brand new tyres, suspension, aero...
More settings to play with in the setup

See below Jack' notes:

What's possible has been taken from real data:
----------------------------------------------
* suspension geometry, springs, ARBs, ... measured on real car and 4k-8k photos, found data from Caterham developments and Caterham owners, ... dampers are set by me, no one...

Read the rest of this update entry...

The LHD shifting animation is not working, too many files to keep track of with 3 different versions I forgot the driver ini file differs too. Just a cosmetic thing.
LHD and Clamshell versions are under the RHD version in launcher.

Tyre pressures are set realistic. They depend on tyre and weight of the car. Default values in setup menu are for road use and pressures as well (16-18psi to preference for comfort, some people even drive it on 14psi etc. because they forget to check, Caterham recommends around 22-24psi), if you want to race it for time then you have to adjust things as you would on a real car. Someone sets 28psi+ on your Caterham in tyre shop, never go there again ;)

Autoblip and autoshift etc. I've used myself when driving vs AI and it should work fine I didn't have any problems. As always let us know, the previous versions was really provisional, I don't even remember what was in it exactly. I will try read here more often now and Ben will collect some feedback.

As far as Force Feedback goes, I've set it as high as possible as to not clip it. It should stay in telemetry between -1 and 1 for most driving situations except crashes. There is nothing else we can do about force feedback quality, strength etc. it's all up to AC and your hardware+software setup used for FF. There is only 1 value a multiplier and that's it, it adjusts strengths so it's not too strong to clip or too weak. A more skilled drivers I know who have driven the prerelease of course say the FF is rather bland and hard to feel and that goes for all AC really not just this mod. Car is also for road and set soft dampers wise etc. it should be fine to drive even on the bumpiest of roads such as mod tracks, Semetin for example. Of course a rock solid dampers and springs would make you feel more tiny details theoretically. Otherwise the suspension is as accurate as we can get it without laser measuring the car. Ben did crawl around one and measured it, tons of photo references and then matched with found data. This is quite an old Caterham and you won't see this front suspension in particular very often. Most Caterhams have a newer one with different lower arm angle and especially the front upper arm is an A but this is how Ben's Cat had it, just half an arm and front ARB. It is not missing part of upper A arm it really was like this.

FAQ:
  • Gear ratios are realistic, it is that high spaced on the lower gears with 5 speed. The ratios are taken, converted to gear fractions and then back to more precise values for AC.
  • 620R will be made, the engine is no problem I have that already figured out and tested, dyno data collected as well for pressure, total power etc. Model wise it's up to Ben, what he makes I will make the data for it. Once the Academy is made it's really mostly swapping engines, tuning aero and springs/dampers. It's one similar car data wise.
UnFAQ:
  • if you want to help, neither one of us is a sound engineer so a sound is always welcome, we have to spare some time from doing other things to make a sound
If you want some technical details, let me know, I have quite about almost all of it.

Bugs found, report to Ben, he will let me know what physics bugs there are.

Enjoying the mod, please donate, there is a donate button Ben has created on the RD mod overview page and link in the download as well. We can't even count the hours spent
