cannot find skins for mod

I have the GP37 mod with the Vanderbilt Cup addition, it works well. I installed the GTR2 conversion, but cannot add the Vanderbilt Cup cars because:
" The files include a new .mas file so you can get all the color
changes of the carset. This will not do anything to the original
cars. There is an original file in the folders in case you want
to go back to the original set and delete these."

So I start snooping into the rfactor files, figuring if i can extract the skins themselves I can create the cars in GTR2 ...and encountered a most curious situation - there are apparently no skin graphics!

Using the Maserati as an example (since i painted couple in rf); all the default cars are red, so the mas file contains a red car, each driver folder contains a dds with a transparent raster layer containing the number and some shading data.
Now, I compare the original Maserati mas with the Vanderbilt one, both are same size (within a couple hundred byte), both contain exactly the same files with exactly the same size. I extract the four body dds files from the Vanderbilt mas, two are transparent raster layers with highlight and shadow data, two apparently are uv mapping layers, no actual graphics (skins) anywhere that I can see. I go to the individual driver folders which each have four dds files, one is driver textures, two are cockpit and seat textures, the last is "body" which is just another transparent raster layer with number and shading data. No where can I find anything resembling a skin, yet the cars appear in game with the different liveries. Where are they?

Not familiar with that mod, but usually when there are no skin files, the answers are in the Gen file. Each veh file will have a "Graphics=" entry pointing to a gen file, and I am guessing each car is pointed to it's own gen. The textures don't have to be DDS files, they can be anything if it is assigned to a material in the gmt. To see that you need a program that can edit the gmt, like 3Dsimed.

Thanks.

From one of the Vanderbilt veh files:

DefaultLivery="37_MASER_28.dds"

HDVehicle=37_MASER.hdv
Graphics=37_MASER.gen

Not sure what I'm looking for in the gen file but:

SearchPath=<VEHDIR>
SearchPath=<VEHDIR>\37LGP
SearchPath=<VEHDIR>\37LGP\37MASERATI
SearchPath=<VEHDIR>\37LGP\37MASERATI\Teams
MASFile=cmaps.mas
MASFile=37LGP_COMMON.mas
MASFile=37LGP\37MASERATI\37_MASER.mas

37_MASER.mas is the file added by the Vanderbilt addition, and where I've been searching for graphics. (There is one of these files replacing the default mas files for each car type - Maserati, Alfa, etc., so if I figure out it should work for all.))

Do you have a link to the mod?

Do all the veh files point to the same gen file? If so, then I was wrong, and the skins are done some other way.

So are all the cars mostly the same (*base color, etc), with small differences, numbers, etc that you see in the DefaultLivery= file? If that is the case, then it could just be that the *.gmt file for the 3d model for the body has the base color applied as a material, with the dds file for the livery dripped on top for shading and the number.

Actually, never mind, I found it. Believe it or not, that DDS file is the skin. There is some alpha channel stuff in there that frankly I don't understand.

If you open that dds file, it will be one layer, because that is all dds supports. If you duplicate that layer a bunch of times, the color will start to appear. Here is one of the Masarati skins. Left is as opened, right is a bunch of copies of the layer to make it visible.

How rFactor gets it to look right I don't know.

The base mod is GP37 by Team Vintage from 2012; their site is long gone, as is NoGrip; every other link I've found is dead. The Vanderbilt Cup addition is from 2013, I can find no links to it, though screenshots of the various cars are here - http://www.virtualr.net/vanderbilt-cup-for-grand-prix-1937-released which show the wide variety of color schemes used.

There is also a physics update from 2017 which greatly improves handling.

I can upload all of this if there are no objections.

Odd. That shadow image is what I see if I add a background layer and solid fill it. But I've yet to encounter anything resembling the many skins.

Whatever arcane process they've used, it works well in rfactor, but I want to add those cars to the GTR2 conversion also.

Will play around with the dds a bit more.

Lol, I looked for the mod here (searched rfactor gp 37) before posting, and found nothing. Perhaps Mr Guillaume can shed some light on this oddity (I'm only doing this for my own use).

Well playing around with it I kind of figured part of it out. Start with this, it is a high level overview on Alpha channel, you can go a lot deeper if you want.

If you open the skin dds in GIMP (or I assume Photoshop, but I don't have that) you can turn off the alpha channel. Do this, you see the skin, much easier and cleaner than how I did it by copying the layer.

In GIMP, click on the "Channels" tab and then the eyeball icon next to Alpha to hide it.

Bingo! From years of computer graphics I have worked with alpha and certainly layered files, but had never encountered a situation where the base graphics were not visible; a true learning experience. Thanks for the input and pointing me in the right direction.

With my installed software it's a two step process, but simple. Open the rfactor DDS in Paint.net, save in R5G6B5 format (this creates a 10meg file with graphics visible); open that in PSP8 and save as DXT5; rename that and move to GTR2. (Trying the process solely in either program gives basically a 12meg version of the rfactor file.)

A brief addendum for anyone considering this, or a similar, conversion. After doing four cars by creating new folders and car files then moving the converted rfactor DDS files to them, I grabbed the remaining Maserati Vanderbilt folders and copied to GTR2; deleted unnecessary files, converted the DDS, and created car files. In game they were all there in the menu ...with red skins. I'll not regale you with the two hours spent on this, walking away twice, inventorying my vast stock of unacceptable language, only for the problem to be obvious, if inexplicable.

The copied rfactor folders all had periods in their names. Why GTR2 would read the car file data but not the DDS data is a mystery; but "Chet.Gardner.28" will not work and "Chet Gardner 28" will.

vanderbilt cup is 318 MB and have this instruction ...
Below is the original info and install instructions for the 37 GP
mod by Team Vintage.

This carset is an unofficial addon to the 37
mod. It is a fictitous Vanderbilt Cup style addon carset. It uses
real drivers and teams from around the world. The Vanderbilt Cup
brought drivers from all over the globe for an International race.
This mod will bring some color to the excitement of these cars.

They are setup as a seperate class. That way you can keep the GP
cars seperated from the Vanderbilt cars. There are new filters to
pick only Vanderbilt GP or Vanderbilt 1500cc. You can add in with
the filters to run against the GP cars too.

The files include a new .mas file so you can get all the color
changes of the carset. This will not do anything to the original
cars. There is an original file in the folders in case you want
to go back to the original set and delete these.

Thanks to all in there interest in this carset. Your calls for it
has brought us all togetehr to bring them to you.

****************Install instructions******************************
unzip the file "37_vanderbilt_cup_v1.0" to a temp folder of your
choice. Inside that folder you will find the carset and a this
readme. Copy the "37LGP" folder there, to your "37LGP" folder in
the rfactor install that you have the mod in. Let it overwrite
that folder. You will be ready to go now. Start your rfactor and
pick the 37 mod. You will find the carset there now.

Enjoy and have fun!
