Miller Motorsports WSB: Form Guide

Heading into the seventh round of the World Superbike Championship at Miller Motorsports Park, Leon Haslam leads the championship standings by 15 points after his stunning race two win at Kyalami last time out.
Last year Haslam secured tenth in a rain affected aggregate timed race one before crashing out of race two fighting for the podium with fellow Brit Jonathan Rea.
In contrast, title rival Max Biaggi secured sixth and fourth in last years races onboard his factory Aprilia, but given his impressive 2010 form and consistency he remains a favourite for the two races. Biaggi could also get the use of the gear driven cam Aprilia motor for the first time this weekend, which will be a an asset along the fast 0.66miles front straight.
During the two years and four WSB races at Miller there have only been two winners. In 2008 Spaniard Carlos Checa claimed an emphatic double onboard the Ten Kate Honda – his first WSB wins of his career.
Last year American Ben Spies dominated proceedings onboard the Sterilgarda Yamaha R1.

Italian Michel Fabrizio has good form at the American track having secured third and second last year and also has the added benefit of 3KG less weigh onboard his factory Xerox Ducati this weekend.
Brit Jonathan Rea was third in race two last season. His result was backed up by Checa finishing second in race one and Ryuichi Kiyonari fourth and fifth last confirming the fact that the smooth, open track clearly suits the powerful Ten Kate Honda.

Miller WSB: Ducati dominate Free Practice, Byrne takes third

Ducati’s occupied the top three places in the opening Free Practice session at Miller motorsports Park today thanks to Michel Fabrizio, Carlos Checa and Shane Byrne. Fabrizio riding the Xerox Ducati set an impressive 1’49.756s best on his 20th and last lap of the hour long session to edge out Althea Ducati’s Checa by 0.130.
Byrne was a further 0.551 off pole and lead a string of 12 riders down to Leon Haslam in 15th who were covered by just over one second.
Speaking to MCN, Byrne said: “It’s certainly a better start than I’ve made in recent races. I started with one bike set like last year and one bike as we had it in Kyalami. It wasn’t until the last exit that we tried a softer tyre and then it became clear that the Kyalami bike was working so much better. It’s more agile which is important around here and in general it has a better balance.”

Title contender Max Biaggi claimed fourth position and in doing so set the fastest top speed along the 0.66mile front straight. Biaggi scorched to 307.6KPH a massive 14KPH faster than second place man Checa.
Jonathan Rea made as solid start on his Hannspree Ten Kate Honda finishing the session in fifth place after making only minimal changes to his set-up. Rea finished ahead of BMW mounted Troy Corser with a fast starting Tom Sykes in seventh onboard his factory Kawasaki.

Yamaha men James Toseland and Cal Crutchlow finished the session down in 12th and 14th places respectively. For Toseland it was his first time at the American circuit and he was coming to terms with the layout, high kerbs and high levels of grip compared to Kyalami two weeks ago. Crutchlow was plagued by brake problems which held him back.

WSB Miller: Biaggi takes win after Checa suffers technical problem

By Michael Guy -
World Superbikes
31 May 2010 20:50

Max Biaggi claimed his fifth race win of the 2010 season to close within ten points of championship leader Leon Haslam. Biaggi and Spanish veteran Carlos Checa were in a class of their own throughout the race, but Biaggi was ultimately gifted the win on lap 19 when Checa’s Althea Ducati stopped whilst leading by over two seconds.

It remains unclear what went wrong with Checa’s Ducati only that when he shut off for a corner and then opened the throttle on the exit the engine had died.

Second place went to Leon Haslam who fought his way up from tenth after a poor start and being held up by Jacob Smrz’s smoking Ducati on the first lap.

Noriyuki Haga made a welcome return to the podium after what has been arguably the most difficult spell of his racing career in recent rounds. The Xerox Ducati man followed Haslam up through the pack to secure his first podium since his win in Valencia at the start of April.

Leon Camier rode an impressive race to secure fourth at the finish. The factory Aprilia man held second on the first lap but dropped back due to excessive front tyre wear on his RSV4.

Troy Corser made another brilliant start onboard his BMW S1000RR to run as high as fourth after starting from 15th on the grid. The Australian rider didn’t have the pace in the closing stages, but secured an impressive fifth place.

The ride of the day had to go to Shane Byrne who went from 20th after a off track excursion to sixth. In the closing stages of the race the Althea Ducati man was the fastest man on track and nearly piped Corser for fifth.

Jonathan Rea crashed his Ten Kate Honda on lap but managed to rejoin to claim 14th. Cal Crutchlow has his race wrecked after he was forced to run off the track avoiding Rea he ended up in 11th. James Toseland ran as high as seventh but dropped to ninth in the closing stages with tyre issues. Tom Sykes finished in 13th.

WSB Miller: Biaggi celebrates ‘lucky’ race wins

By Michael Guy - MCN
World Superbikes
01 June 2010 03:51

Max Biaggi stormed to his second double win of the 2010 championship to take the lead of the standings for the first time in his Superbike career.
The factory Aprilia rider was the only man capable of keeping flying Spaniard Carlos Checa in touch in both races and was ultimately gifted the win after Checa was ruled out of both races with technical problems.
In what was a historic day for Aprilia, Biaggi was backed up by his team-mate Leon Camier in race two to record the Italian manufacturers’ first ever 1 – 2 finish in WSB.
Biaggi said: “This is a fantastic day for me. It was my dream to make a double win here in Salt Lake City and that’s what I did. I’m very lucky and I think Checa deserves the race wins, he rode very hard and honestly speaking he did deserve it, but racing is racing, sometimes these things happen. It was a hard race with him, we had a good rhythm and a very good pace.”
Biaggi has now scored 257 points and sits 15 points clear of Alstare Suzuki rider Leon Haslam at the top of the table. Biaggi’s double win came using the new gear driven cam motor – the first time he has used it on race day.
“The 50 points is very good for me and my team. We’ve only been racing this bike for one and a half season, but we have developed it very well and my engineers have done a great job. I am very happy for Aprilia, the bike is strong and we can compete with the Japanese manufacturers. The bike is very fast and on this track its flying.”

WSB Brno: Haga dominates day one for Ducati, Corser airlifted to hospital

By Michael Guy -MCN
World Superbikes
09 July 2010 18:15

Xerox Ducati rider Noriyuki Haga was the surprise fastest man at the end of the first qualifying session at Brno. Haga is not known for his pace in qualifying and during the 2010 season has often struggled to set fast one off lap times, which have compromised his grid position and race results.

But despite scorching 58 degree track temperatures the Japanese rider was in impressive form to finish the day 0.294 seconds faster than second place man Cal Crutchlow.
Crutchlow used a new set of tyres to jump up the leader board with his final lap of the day to finish ahead of Haga’s team-mate Michel Fabrizio in third.

Carlos Checa picked himself up from a crash when he lost the front of his Althea Ducati to set the fourth fastest time of the day.
Max Biaggi made his traditional slow start to the weekend, but began to up his pace in the final ten minutes of the session where he posted four fast laps onboard his factory Alitalia Aprilia.

Spaniard Ruben Xaus backed up his positive testing results at Imola last week to go sixth quickest ahead local hero Jacob Smrz who made his first appearance on the Aprilia RSV4 after switching from Ducati.

Jonathan Rea benefited from a new spec front tyre which helped his performance and reduced chatter to end the day in eighth. Rea piped Sterilgarda Yamaha rider James Toseland who looks to be in much better form following his tough weekend in Misano and in testing at Imola.
Shane Byrne held sixth in Free practice but dropped to 13th with Leon Camier doing a good job of learning the track in 16th.

Leon Haslam endured a torrid day after suffering with the same engine braking problems that plagued him at Misano finishing 17th. Haslam persevered with one bike and will need to find a solution quickly if he wants to get his weekend back on track.

Troy Corser saw his hopes of repeating his Misano podium take a massive blow after he crashed his BMW S1000RR in the final minute of the session. Although nobody saw the crash he is believed to have high sided exiting turn eight. The 38 year old suffered concussion and was complaining of chest pains and was airlifted to Brno hospital for further x-rays and a CT scan. He is expected to stay in hospital overnight for observation.

Rea leads Brit charge in practice

By Michael Guy - MCN
30 July 2010 16:13

Jonathan Rea led an all British charge at the end of the opening Free Practice session at Silverstone today.
The Hannspree Ten Kate Honda rider was the only man to set a sub 2.07s lap time to finish ahead of equally fast starter James Toseland.
Rea said: It’s a good layout and it’s nice to ride. At the moment my bike isn’t working that well, but I don’t think anyone’s is. There are a few areas where I’ve got chatter but it’s nothing to serious and I can ride around it.”
Alstare Suzuki rider Leon Haslam bounced back to the front of the grid after a tough previous round in Brno. The 27 year old set the third fastest time to finish ahead of fellow Brit Cal Crutchlow.
First qualifying gets underway at 15.45 local time.
